The Saturday Age is “relaunching” tomorrow. They’ve been printing on Saturdays for a good long time so it’s really just a redesign of the paper and the same old content about evil Liberal/Labor politicians, enlightened calzone-serving Greens MPs and restaurants that serve polenta. Hopefully, they’ll at least get the spelling right, although as we’ll see, early signs are not encouraging.
A member of the VEXNEWS Investigations Unit embedded secretly within the Fairfax distribution network advises that he today feared for the safety of some animals after a large number of sealed boxes from The Age newspaper were labelled to the effect that they contained “badgersâ€.
He was already half-way through calling the loud Hugh Wirth of the RSPCA to alert them to this wrongdoing when he opened the package and discovered merely “badges†presumably made in China to promote the re-launch or re-design or re-cycle of the Saturday Age, which once used to make so much money that even a descendant of Lang Hancock would be well impressed.
It has fallen on leaner times due to merciful collapse in classifieds advertising, cannibalised by cheap if not completely free alternatives online, so Fairfax management are trying to fire up their dwindling number of customers about the edition that usually gets the best features and scoops, such as they are. With the departure of Andrew Rule – exclusively reported first on VEXNEWS – and some speculating about the possible departure of his bald sidekick John “Sly†Silvester things are bleaker at Media House than a muggy, grey Melbourne Friday afternoon.
So glad it wasn’t a box of beavers!
I LOVE POLENTA.Andrew is senting a kilo of it to anyone who can tell what it is…..
And how many copies of the Saturday Age will be sold … and how many copies of the Weekend Australian?
Isn’t envy one of the deadly sins?
This site is nuttier than 500 fruitcakes.
The Saturday Age will continue to die a slow death as all that classified advertising continues to go online.
Simply, their product model is doomed due to the internet being the better medium for classified advertising.
Wendy,
The Weekend Australian outsells the Saturday Age:

The Herald Sun vastly outsells the Age as does the Daily Telegraph/Sunday Telegraph against The SMH and Sun Herald. Nationally, The Australian outsells the AFR.
Murdoch papers outsell Fairfax papers.
The New Saturday Age was a beauty to behold. Extensive news, bold backgrounders and opinion that made sense.

Typical Age – bags Brumby Govt for negelectibg public transport and then bags the infrastructure projects needed to improve public transport.
Stuff anybody else – just dont upset the inner city yups in Footscray

The Age gives a free plug for Singleton’s commercial venture.
Hmmmm!
A struggling newspaper wanting for advertising revenue gives a free plug for an advertising baron’s commercial property venture – that would be a conflict of interest for which these hypocrites would demand a corruption enquiry if were done by a politician.
Badgers! We don’t want no stinking badgers!
Very interesting entry, I look forward to the next! Thx for share
