Indian press amused by list of thousands of ‘unparliamentary’ phrases and words

2012 starts in fine form with news that thousands of phrases and words that are considered ‘unparliamentary’ have been listed and published in a handy guide by the Indian parliament.

Opening the batting is “communist” even though there are still 40 members of the communist party in the parliament.

Other bad words deemed ‘unparliamentary’ include:

■ ‘Ringmaster’

■ ‘Animal’

■ ‘Scumbag’

■ ‘Sh*t’ or the ever-popular ‘bucket of sh*t’

■ ‘Badmashi’

■ ‘Bad’ (as in bad man)

■ ‘Bandicoot’ (fair enough too)

■ cannot refer to female MPs as ‘beloved’ or ‘darling’

■ ‘double-minded’ having ‘double-standards’ or engaging in ‘double-talk’

■ ‘rat’ or ‘dirty little rat’

■ The Indian press also notes ‘No member, irrespective of whether he has a criminal record, can be called a “goonda” or “420”; and

many others for which you had to be there.

  1. “Credit card abuser” will be the first phrase Cantberra includes as unparliamentary.

  2. What about “slum dog” too?

  3. India needs a strong ‘lokpal’ bill now (anti corruption bill).

It has stalled this month in the upper house as regional parties from the government and opposition coalitions did not want anti-corruption agencies (Lokyukta) put in place for the state level. This was despite the bill being passed in the lower house.

The last dot point in the list above shows the power of ‘goonda’ or thug politics in India. MPs cannot even call a convicted members a ‘Goonda’.

Also for Aussie audiences the term ’420′ (char so vee in Punjabi or Char so bees in Hindi) refers to part of the Indian penal code that deals with forgery and fraud etc. This street term is used for those who are cheats and liars.

  4. Being a communist is entirely unparliamentary.

Communists do not believe in parliamentary democracy.

Communists do not believe in property rights or in economic freedom generally.

This socialist government is unwittingly being manipulated by communists in the Australian Greens. It is responsible for an ongoing decline in Australia’s economic freedom by reckless spending from 2008 to 2010, labour market re-regulation and the imposition of new taxation and controls. The Heritage Foundation would have scored Australia lower in its survey if not for:

    (i) the great reforms under Costello building on Keating as Treasurer (but not as PM);

(ii) the ongoing decline of US economic freedom under Obama and the European mess.

Singapore and Hong Kong remain the regional winners but of course both rely on a growing global economy even more than Australia does.

Despite the ALP government’s destruction of Australia’s productivity and competitiveness, I’d much rather be living in Australia than any of the other countries the Heritage Foundation placed in the top 10. This suggests to me that there is great opportunity for Australia if only we finish the reforms started in 1981 and continued for 25 years.

If Howard hadn’t blinked on IR reform late in 2006, Costello would be Prime Minister and we’d have the fastest growing, most flexible and resilient economy in the world with the highest living standards and lowest levels of government debt.

Once you back pedal on a reform, you give power to the enemies of reform.
