Freedom will defeat its opponents in China and Russia but only if we keep it real

The newest form of appeasement is taking hold in parts of corporate Australia and beyond. The willingness of usually right-wing patriot mining folk to suck up to regimes they’d normally find distasteful is embarrassing at times. It forgets the arc of history is inclined in the direction of justice and freedom, to paraphrase President Obama and his inspiration Martin Luther King Jr.

It forgets the lesson of maybe the most important book (first published in in 1841)you should read about money or politics for that matter: Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. All bubbles burst.

And there’s a national strategic issue for democratic nations too as this excellent piece by Canada’s former leader of their Liberal Party makes clear:

Nothing is gained by pretending that Russia and China are not the chief strategic threat to the moral and political commitments of liberal democracies. We should understand this threat for what it is. We are faced with political opponents, and if our belief in freedom is grounded in the facts, we will win.
