The ALP National Executive – at the friendly request of the PM’s office – has declared WA federal preselections (for non-held seats – ie, most of them) null and void to ensure the highest calibre of candidates are fielded at the election, expected as late as November next year.
Insiders say this suggests that Canberra folk are wholly more optimistic about their chances in WA than the moribund, dysfunctional and barely solvent WA branch of the ALP which is frequently the subject of “intervention” speculation, whereby the national party would takeover its operations. That’s probably not going to happen now but it almost certainly should.
The WA state parliamentary team is quite good with every prospect they’ll be competitive at the election after next, Labor’s federal numbers are improving rapidly enough for this sudden preselection re-think to be justified, it’s just the party machine that needs a serious kick up the bum, well-placed sources have told VEXNEWS.
Gillard got a sympathy bump in the polls because her father died. Unfortunately for Labor, she has run of fathers.
