BRISBANE BUZZES: Was James Ashby paid $50,000 to make his sexual harassment complaint against Slipper?

Ashby450Speaker Peter Slipper’s sex harassment accuser James Ashby could be in sorts of legal trouble if rumours wildly circulating Brisbane about him receiving an undisclosed $50,000 payment to bring his Federal Court case are true.

Some even claim that a well-known Slipper nemesis on the Sunshine Coast arranged the payment. We’re not yet willing to name the person but he is a senior political figure.

Ashby, said to have been a troubled lad by those who knew him well at Caloundra High School, is widely understood in political circles to have been paid to make the claims he has made.

The most grave of Ashby’s claims, that Slipper handed over blank Cabcharge dockets to limousine drivers on particular dates for unspecified reasons, appear to have already been proven to be not correct, with most conceding a hand-writing match between the Speaker and the dockets. There’s a general vibe-of-the-thing complaint about Slipper’s spending on travel but he is apparently by no means Club Fed’s biggest or free-est spender. Their sense of entitlement is as unlimited as the entitlements are, it seems. The ones living furthest from the airport run up the biggest bills, we are told.

The sexual harassment claims are to be resolved by the Federal Court and will largely rest on the credibility of the accuser. If Ashby has received payment, a payment said to be in addition to the promise of assistance with all legal bills, this would inevitably come up in the hearing. If he lies about it, and there’s evidence of it that supports the rumours buzzing around Brisbane, then he’ll be guilty of perjury and in serious bother.

While we’re not expecting a response, we will be asking the national Chairman of Harmers law firm, Michael Harmer, who is personally handling Ashby’s litigation, whether Ashby is personally paying for the case and whether he is charging his normal charge-out rate of $600 per hour. It seems highly unlikely Ashby could afford him.

VEXNEWS is closely examining the life and times of James Ashby and we’re not liking what we hear. A trusted political insider, with no fondness for Labor, told us from the start “There’s something NQR (not quite right) about this whole thing.” We’re inclined to agree.

The Coalition, on the verge of a famous victory next year (if not sooner) needs to be very careful about its association with James Ashby, who apparently is a paid-up member of the LNP. If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

  1. Correction: It has been reported elsewhere that Ashby resigned from the LNP shortly before bringing his claim in the Federal Court. Just so it didn’t look too obvious I guess.

Any government regardless of its majority could be brought down.Come on lets get real!

  15. The Labor party has the most to lose from Ashby’s claims. I would be looking there.
Ashby quit the LNP when he joined Slipper. Slipper had already gone.
So exactly what does the LNP gain? Zero.
Media and party members have been asking for the government to investigate Slipper’s spending for at least three years.
Nothing to gain by the current Ashby revelations.

  22. If you live in CBR and have had any contact with the Press Gallery or Fed pollies, you know that they are pretty pally. There isn’t a great divide between them. The PG journos know who’s having an affair with who, who drinks too much, who’s best mates with someone from the “other side”, who likes to visit prostitutes, etc. There’s a longstanding, unspoken “gentlemen’s agreement” that those issues (except the best mates one) are off limits.

They would have known about Slipper from at least 9yrs ago when the video surfaced. I’m very surprised that Ashby’s complaints could make it to the Fed Court without it rating a mention before now. He would have been employed under the APS Act, and there’s a myriad of legislation proscribing how such complaints are to be dealt with. A little FoI would have neatly bypassed the gentlemen’s agreement and given someone a hell of a scoop. So why didn’t they? The whole thing reeks.

And FWIW, this isn’t a Labor party issue as much as some would love it to be. He’s still the LNP’s man, and his continued presence despite his questionable approach to hiring and unprofessional “activities” with his own staff should have been dealt with yrs ago by them.

  23. What a crock of shit!!
Spoke to my contacts in the LNP in BrisVegas last week and they gave me the heads up on this one.
They were chortling about it in that, the source of this rumour is none other than Slippery himself.
His ever decreasing band of supporters has been putting it about to anyone who will listen (also a limited pool these days). This was part of Slippery’s almost sad campaign of appointing himself judge and jury and (surprise, surprise) finding himself not guilty yer ‘onner.
Anyone who has followed Queensland politics closely can take a reasonable stab at who you are referring to as the alleged funder of Ashby.
My advice – tread warily or put your assets in a relative’s name quick smart.

Whilst on the subject of the Cabcharge fraud what is going to pop very soon is a stat dec from a person employed by a ‘voucher broker’ (an organisation which cashes in vouchers for drivers) that several Slippery’s vouchers carry the hand-writing of one of his drivers.
Plod in Brisbane (and presumably elsewhere) is putting extreme pressure on – offering indemnity to anyone who will lag Slippery – and word is they have got plenty of takers.

  24. Reading the posts here Ashby’s crimes are as follows:-
    1. He has engaged a PR firm (that would make all clients of awker Britton crooks – although some certainly are).
    2. Someone has offered to stump up for Ashby’s legals (So What? Ms Gillard’s former firm of ambulance chasers are great proponents of “no win – no fee”).
    3. Ashby doesn’t want to talk to the media (Wow!! can anyone tell me how many pressers the (alleged) brothel-creeper Thomson has done in the last three years)

Oh … and Kev … you can bleat all you like that Slippery is a Coalition problem, but everytime his head appears on TV the viewers think “crook, lecher ….. Gillard’s fuck-up”.

And one more thing I can tell you for free. Whilst all here care very little what consenting chaps get up to together there remains a significant minority of traditional labour supporters who have very firm views about appendages and orifices and will NOT be impressed.

  32. Update.
LNP helpers had plenty laugh about Saturday, with the rout at the Brisbane CC elections.
The biggest joke around the booths was this story being hawked by Slippery and his mates about the alleged pay-off to Ashby.
It started early last week with the accusation being a payout of $5,000. When the rumour failed to gain any real traction (not even Fairfax or the ABC will touch it), the purveyors of said rumour kept upping the amount to try to give the story more oomph.
One wag noted that you could tell it came from Slippery because the amount kept increasing by multiples of $328.74.

Say what you want about the Liberal Party & the LNP, at least you look at the CVs of their MPs and there is a bit of diversity – business owners, bankers, lawyers, accountants, doctors, nurses, etc.

After the 1996 loss, everyone thought the ALP would introduce some real internal reforms to shed the union influence and get some real people into seats. BIG FAIL. Will they do so after the next Federal election flogging? Very unlikely!

  70. The Swan has become a goose.
There have been a lot of references to Grech here.
There were many lessons out of that one, among them that Turnbull over-reached big-time in pursuing Rudd and, as we know, it imploded big-time. Now there are those who still believe (with some justification) that if the Member for Networth had concentrated on the ‘bird in the hand’ – the bird in this case being a Swan – he might have claimed a scalp.
But once it blew up the ONLY smart thing Turnbull then did was drop it like a hot spud. Pursuing Swan (right or wrong) would simply serve to remind voters of the greater stuff-up.
So why is Swan pursuing Pyne. He won’t find any smoking gun even if he can prove that Pyne spoke to Ashby. Gillard has effectively dumped Slippery due to ‘crossed clouds’ and ‘dark lines’ or whatever she said. So why is Swan intent on proving Gillard wrong and pulling scabs off the old wounds? The electorate will still think Slippery and the (alleged) brothel creeper are bent and s e Gillard as implicated.
If this was the Hawke Government Richo would have Swan in his right now tearing him a new arsehole. Then again, if Swan was in the Hawke Government he would be Parliamentary Secretary for Public Service Stationery.

Does Ashby wear Slippers in bed?

  75. Treasurer Wayne Swan has challenged Coalition frontbencher Christopher Pyne to reveal the extent of his contact with the political aide who has made sexual harassment and fraud allegations against Speaker Peter Slipper.

Mr Pyne, the Manager of Opposition Business, has confirmed he met Mr Slipper’s former staffer James Ashby three times.

Fairfax newspapers are reporting the pair had drinks in the Speaker’s parliamentary office a month before the court documents were filed, and says after the meeting Mr Pyne called the Speaker’s office requesting Mr Ashby’s mobile phone number.

The report claims Mr Pyne drank with Mr Ashby from about 9:30pm until after 11:00pm on March 19, and the paper quotes Mr Pyne as saying he was merely “passing the time of day”.

But later today, Mr Pyne hit back – saying the Government is trying to create a fanciful “political conspiracy” about his contact with Mr Ashby – and says in his role as Manager of Opposition business he is in “regular contact” with the Speaker’s office.

“In the course of my work as Manager of Opposition business, I have had cause to meet Mr James Ashby three times – twice in the Speaker’s office and once when he came to my office to collect wine being given to a former Coalition staffer as a farewell gift,” Mr Pyne said in a statement.

“On no occasion did he raise the matters canvassed in the Federal Court action that have subsequently come to light with me.”

Mr Pyne says he has had no telephone contact with Mr Ashby “at any time”.
    ‘Questions to answer’

Treasurer Wayne Swan has challenged Mr Pyne to release his phone records to prove it.

“Mr Pyne has many questions to answer,” the Treasurer said.

“Did he phone Mr Ashby after he requested his telephone number? Is he prepared to provide his phone records and make those public if he hasn’t phoned Mr Ashby?

“The same standard that is being applied to Mr Slipper ought to be applied to the opposition,” Mr Swan said.

Mr Slipper has stood aside as Speaker until all the claims against him are resolved.

On ABC1’s 7.30 last week, Mr Abbott said he was not aware of Mr Ashby receiving any assistance from the Coalition in preparing his court claim.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that Mr Slipper had agreed not to return to the Speaker’s chair in the near future.

Mr Slipper’s former staffer James Ashby has lodged the civil claim under the Fair Work Act against the Commonwealth and Mr Slipper, in which he alleges he was continually harassed by Mr Slipper since he began working for the Speaker in December last year.

Mr Ashby says it is clear the Speaker only hired him to pursue a sexual relationship.

Mr Slipper also faces separate criminal allegations that he misused Government Cabcharge vouchers, but he has released copies of the vouchers that he says vindicate him.

Mr Slipper has consistently denied the allegations against him.

And that folks is how Howard got his lies across with his media mates on side. And how he led us to an illegal war.And how he made us a target in Bali.
And how he anointed his wet spot liaison with Bronny Bishop, the Reverend Tony Abbott, to be his Health Minister and later his apprentice.

Scary isn’t it, when the Labor Party mimic the experts in deceptive misery, and community destruction.

No-one can do ‘auto fellatio’ better than the Liberals and their supporters.

  82. Suppose it is all a bit like Cigar Billy Clinton and Monica. How did a small cuban affect his ability to do the job (as in presidency and not Monica). Slippery Pete has, from all accounts performed the job of Speaker in a very good manner dispensing “justice” from the chair without fear or favour (to both sides of the house). Arguably the best Speaker for many many years. It just seems a bit unfair that unsubstaniated claims, inuendo etc etc can derail a pollie, from either side.

Keep talking up Pyne and Ashby …. I think Williamson should make sure he has his toothbrush packed.
I here Silverwater is nice this time of year.

PS What is Williamson doing anywhere near the offices when he is allegedly on enforced leave?
PPS These clowns aren’t even very good at being crooks. They had three years to (a) start a fire; (b) buy a shredder; (c) even EAT the freakin’ documents

What is hilarious is, that even if the documents being removed weren’t incriminating, he will still go a row.

  100. If it is true that Ashby has been paid, or even if it were true that he was even just verbally encouraged by anyone in any position in the Coalition, to say these things (true or false) then it would be the biggest political ballsup, stupid goddamned thing to do that I can remember, and these days the age box I tick on forms is downright depressing.

The libs dont need to do a thing for the shambles that is the Greens-governed ALP to crash and burn a natural death.

The only upside is, if it is both true that he was bribed to do this and that the Coalition has dirty hands, it might save the ALP from complete electoral oblivion. No democracy can be strong if one side gets Queenland’ed to the point where they can hold a full lower houes meeting in a minivan.

James ashby needs to be drawn and quartered for his baseless lies against slipper which will no doubt end up leaving mud all over the coalition.I was maintaining a cool head over this matter until the brough ashby meeting/s occurred. By ashby calling brough the one man that stands to gain over the smearing of slippers reputation. When he had never met brough and how he was somehow the best person to provide advice. (A mentally retarded former minister who lost his seat a disgraced member of the defence forces and someone who has remained unemployed for the last six years) it is clearly a complete set up. Brough is not standing against Slipper in a pre-selection. In case you’ve been asleep for the last six months, Slippery has resigned the Libs and is an “independent”, therefore the Lib nomination for his seat is open.
As for Slippery being a serious contender as an independent against Brough ….. you have got to be joking!
Slippery won’t stand, and if he does, he will lose his deposit (which he will have to pay in cash, not Cabcharge vouchers so it’s gonna hurt)..
