COMRADE CORRESPONDENTS: Herald letters’ page goes rogue with Israeli hate fest

hezbollah The following intellectually bankrupt letters appear in today’s Sydney Morning Herald, leaving no doubt whatsoever as to Fairfax’s position on attacking the very concept of Israel itself. Those pushing the view that Israel is a ‘rogue state’ are of course attempting to lay the foundations for an argument as to why it ought not exist, that when it is attacked by Iran that it somehow had oblivion coming and deserved destruction. These are self-evidently the arguments of extremists who sadly find sanctuary on a letters’ page of a major metropolitan newspaper whose revenues are in terminal decline.

Rogue tag seems right for Israel

I find Ruth Guth’s description (Letters, February 23) of a rogue state as ”one that does not respect other states in its international actions” a very accurate portrayal of Israel.

Tony Trojanovic Moss Vale

If a ”rogue state” is one that does not respect other states in its international actions, then in relation to this case and many others, I would indeed call Israel that. Every country has a right to defend itself and its people, but this must be proportionate and within international law – sadly, two parameters that Israel rarely keeps between.

Cameron Blunsden Mayfield

Ruth Guth asks "what is the definition of a state that has to fight to exist and protect its citizens"? How about Palestine – a state that really has had to fight tooth and nail to exist, without receiving a couple of billion dollars a year in military aid from the United States.

Ian Newman Willoughby

rogue Sorry, Ian Newman. The Palestinian Authority well and truly has received billions of dollars in funding, from the US, EU and even its sworn enemy Israel (some "rogue state"!)
Yet what have they done with it to benefit their people? Exactly nothing. Rather than build roads, schools, hospitals, power stations or a future, they’ve concentrated solely on killing Jews, with predictable results when the Jews refuse to simply die.

Newman may also wish to consider why Yasser Arafat’s wife has a personal inheritance of billions, while the typical Palestinian lives on a few dollars a day. Then again, most of the rest of the Arab world is similarly dysfunctional and corrupt. Another reason why they can’t stand the amazing success story that is the tiny Jewish state of Israel.

Oh, and by the way, Mr Newman, "Palestine" isn’t actually a state. Perhaps it could be except the Palestinians have consistently said no each time it was presented to them. Put simply, the idea of a Palestinian state is less attractive to them than the idea of no Jewish state.

Thanks to reader Dan for sharing this latest example of the SMH giving sanctuary to extremists on its letters page.

  1. Extremist! God you live a sheltered life. It’s just a point of view and one expressed by many following the activities of the Mossad in Dubai or Bahrain. Grow up

  2. PS letters pages carry the rider that views of correspondents don’t necessarily represent those of the paper Your approach to dissent is totalitarian ad hominen attacks and name calling, childish in the extreme

  3. AL, where is the consistency in you [rightly] decrying the suggestion that anything said against an Indian is by definition racist, with your assertion here that anyone who dares to point out one of the myriad flaws in the way Israel conduicts itself, is a rabid anti-semite?!
