Federal Government

COURT OUT: Labor veteran Laurie Ferguson weighs legal options over preselection

ferg

Labor federal MP Laurie Ferguson has a problem.

The popular bloke around the Club Fed caucus thinks he’s set to be shafted by the powers-that-be in Sussex Street ALP HQ and by internal factional foes within the NSW Left because they say he’s been there too long. He was first elected to state Parliament in 1984 before going to Club Fed in 1990.

He wants to be able to have a run at a seat where he’ll have a chance of winning a rank-and-file ballot.

His supporters say that Ferguson is seriously considering putting a “very big fight” to stay on, inspired by the Last of the Mohicans style stand of ex-Labor Leader Simon Crean in Hotham.

“Crean was allowed to contest the preselection. Why shouldn’t Laurie get the same treatment?” his supporters have argued.

“Very big fight” could include obtaining support for a potentially expensive and spectacular  legal challenge to Labor HQ plans to prevent him from being able to fight what his supporters say should be an “honest contest” and a “fair fight”.

“The rules that allow for the suspension of rank-and-file ballots in NSW have never been seriously tested before. Going to the courts might be the only way of keeping them honest. Why shouldn’t Laurie at least have the chance of fighting on? If he loses a fair fight, so be it. But I wouldn’t underestimate him,” the NSW Left source explained.

PS I bet ‘god help us rob hull is deputy premier’, ‘greedy’ and ‘true believer’ have never stood on a union picket line in their lives – but you have often.

  7. True Believer

I would suggest you are a liar. laurie is not in the job for free overseas trips or perks. Laurie is one of the most hard working honest politicians in the country no matter what form of Government you look at. If there is any truth to what you are saying why don’t you put your full name on the blog instead of hiding behind a pseudo name like true believer? I’ll tell you why because your full of crap! The amount of personal time Laurie spends fighting for his constituents or attending events and functions is unbelievable. The bloke spends seven days a week working. Something idiots like Rob Hulls is deputy Premier, and True Believer would not understand. Rack off and leave him alone, if he wants to go to pre selection he has earnt that right!!!

  8. Gillard will step in for her mate she tends to do that. Even helped promote underperforming Brendon O’Connor to cabinet. Surely there will be one last hooray for fergi.

  11. Steve Christou, what planet are you on, why don’t you put your real name. I know what he said to me to my face in Canberra 6 years ago along with several other staffers, Finland, Iceland bloody Maryland and fatland

  12. True Believer

Steve Christou is my real name. Why don’t you put your real name. If you are going to make such serious allegations towards somebody then why don’t you have the courage to put your name to it? Maybe then people might actually take you seriously.
I speak honestly. It is yourself and god save us that hide behind false names on blogs bagging people out. If you want to bag somebody out that’s fine thats your right, but at least have the courage to add your real name to it!!!

  14. John Murphy should get the chop.

  15. Murphy, both Fergusons, Melham, we could go on. These people have no interest in the Party or the working battlers of Orstralia.I wish they would all just piss off, out the trough. Gillard will lose any cred if she blocks renewal.

  16. Rank and file preselections are dead federally because Rudd wants it that way. He wants ultimate control and his left and right hand men in NSW, Arbib & Albanese will select who runs where.
Democracy is flat lining in the ALP.

  17. Urgent memo to K Rudd

Kevin there will be serious economic implications for the ACT economy if Laurie gets the chop.

All those sleezy wine bars, all you can eat buffets and of course those aldult entertainment outlets at Fyshwick will go broke.

  18. Why isnt Richard Dalla-Riva having his preselection pulled? He is the worst excuse for a politician in Australia.

  19. Could the NSW Left Source mentioned in this story be Anthony D’Adam? I thought my boy Foley taught you to keep your mouth shut at LDC? If you could centrally control Laurie’s preselction you would, yet you demand he be allowed to have a rank and file ballot as if you have the moral high ground.

Also, Steve Christou didn’t mention he works for Laurie.

  21. Hi Albo

It’s no secret that i work for Laurie. If i wanted to hide it i would not use my real name on this blog. Having known Laurie both personally and professionally for a few years now i guess i am well qualified in answering some of the critics on this forum who are intent on bagging him and giving him a bad name. I’ll reiterate what i said earlier, Laurie works very hard for his constituency almost always seven days a week, consisting of early morning till late at night. I can rarely remember the last time Laurie had a full day off to himself. All this often comes at the expense of his own personal commitments, so to read the nonsense written by some on these pages is really disapointing.

Is Mr Ferguson giving you any bonuses for posting on vex? This is a wast of tax payer money!!!

  24. how much of a bonus is fergs paying u

    Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2009, 13:39
  25. I don’t understand why a couple of idiots have an issue with Steve commenting on, when we all know that the Vex is used as a political smear campaign from all staffers of politicians. At least Christou has the balls to put his name to print. As for the so-called waste of tax payer money, I bet he does hours of unpaid overtime. Perhaps if the Liberal staffers spent more time helping their members then focusing on trashing people in blogs, their political party would not be such a mess.

    Posted by Sith Lord | October 28, 2009, 15:22
  26. God save us if you are referring to Steve Christou political staffer, you are way off the mark. I have dealt with Steve on several occasions mainly in regards to Centrelink and CSA matters. He has helped resolve issues in two days that Centrelink and CSA would not touch in months. His work mobile was always available even late at night to field my questions and he was always pleasant. Now that’s value for money.

  27. “Rape is the worst crime there is,” according to John Brumby.

Oh really? So murder and torture are less severe?

    What a tool.

Posted by god help us john brumby is premier. | October 28, 2009, 16:38
  28. I suppose rape is a form of torture but yes murder is the most serious of all crimes, or perhaps treason.

  31. Oh the days when strathfield used to be a liberal area. then all the povvo labor voting ethnics moved in, once we’re squashed into reidistan we’ll have no chance.

I hope murphy goes though – the only time he’s opened his mouth in parliament in the last 10 years was to ask for a parliamentary inquiry into the beef stroganoff portions being served at the parliament house cafeteria. Now there’s a man who knows what his constituents care about.

  32. Over the years I’ve often been disappointed by people who were too, too timid to speak out, so they remained silent.

They, however, were heroes alongside the gutless wimps who ‘speak out’ by attacking others anonymously from the cowards’ castles of blog sites. IF these silent assassins really believed in what they state, would it be too much to expect just a tad (not too much, of course) more courage on their part?

    Apparently yes.

  33. I arrived home from work today and found a note from Murphy saying he was doorknocking my street, but missed me because i wasn’t home. That doesn’t seem like a man who is going to be shafted.

Bye bye laurie! the people of auburn and lidcombe are about to find out what a hard working local member looks like.
