CURIOUSER: Militant Mighell looks for Liberal leadership on climate change

The boss of the ETU in Victoria Dean Mighell offers more colour than the average Dulux shop. Whether it’s zany adventures in London, nude photo shoots for cricket club calendars and even getting punted from the ALP for – of all things – profanity, Dean Mighell is a human headline.

But now it seems he’s flicked the switch from militant with lefty rhetoric to militant with pragmatic straight-talk, after he’s revealed to the Financial Review that he has already had talks with the Liberals on climate change. This is a marked improvement on his chumming up with the Greens political party whose policies – if enacted – would leave his members lining up at Centrelink.

The Christmas break means that Mighell’s move probably won’t get the attention it deserves. While Mighell’s union is affiliated to the ALP, his forced resignation from it means he doesn’t owe Labor a thing. Up til now, with Mighell purely splashing around in the Greens party kiddies pool, that hasn’t been a problem for Rudd.

After the dismissive laughter about Mighell’s latest stunt subsides, a prominent union boss reaching out to his traditional enemies to devise workable solutions to climate change that don’t involve a great big green tax could be a very significant development.

  1. The thick skulls in the ALP Socialist Left and state cabinet are too blame on this one.

How can a sun-drenched country like Australia not use a gross feed in tariff to kick start a solar PV industry?

Only our sun stuck ALP pollies could make us ignore solar – and give the liberals a place in the sun on renewable energy.

  2. I always knew there was something about Dean that I found attractive. It appears that unlike so many within the Union Aristocracy he really believes that the members interests should come first.

  4. Didn’t the Herald sun last week report that this grubb registered the trade mark and the company in his own name and home address that the ETU trains electricrians in solar panels. Now he is lobbying the Libs to push for better feed in tariffs. What a fucken pathetic Joke this dickhead has become

  6. Deano isnt as far from the silver tail Libs as we all think. Heard he just paid about $1.5 mill for a house in Melbournes north. All the trade marks must be paying off. He’s now a millionaire union leader.

  9. Mighell is on the ball. He also put up the money for a report on the proposed Australia-China Free Trade Agreement. Unlike the AMWU et al, Mighell actually understands what damage a free trade agreement with China would do to blue collar workers and he has the balls to speak out about it.

  11. I can’t see anything wrong with Dean Mighell. He only does things I have done, like make a complete fool of myself, surround myself with idiots, told Porkies and make statements to the press that aren’t true. Dean’s OK leave him alone. He is a Libertarian like me or is it an Imbecile like me.

  14. Tom, can you tell us all who produced that Australia-China free trade report. I’m sure everyone would be interested in that?

  15. Interesting comment from Tom Paine abive that Dean paid for a report on a China FTA… even though such an FTA would have zero impact on his members!

Yet another waste of union members’ money for superfluous political ends

  17. It must be the recent move that has stressed poor old Dean’s brain. What part doesn’t he get? The Libs (nor Labor) are going to adopt a feed in tariff; they are not going to do anything that in the slightest way decreases profits for the big end of town, not gonna happen. In regards to the research on a FTA with China, good work, good report, but wasn’t it Dean who proposed setting up a work wear factory in China a few years ago? This is the problem with Dean he is totally inconsistent and most of what he does is self serving, he would make a great businessman himself, he has the right measure of deceit and ego. It’s unfortunate that Mighell is so unlikable and has an ability to burn off everyone around him. A lot of what he says is quite right, especially in regards to the ALP, the problem is most of what he does is aimed at revenge against the party that ‘wronged’ him. His effort and energy would be better served running himself as an independent and actually putting himself on the line. Oh and the house in Strathmore was I believe $1.2M not $1.5M many people are asking where the money came from.

  18. Sorry, as a DiHard conservative, we already had Turnbull. Dean, sorry mate, you are either one or the other. People like you, only raise suspicion of your motives. Personally, I think you are an opportunistic grub.

  19. An opportunist of the worst order. The Liberals should beware of making friends with such a disloyal arsehole.
