This reminds me of Vietnam in 1975. We Australians took in many refugees who managed to escape the Communists. These good people went into small businesses, especially retail and hospitality, and enriched our society.
The Liberals stood up to Whitlam who called them “slanty eyed Balts” – equating these refugees with the post-WW2 intake of refugees from the Baltic states. The Baltic people knew that their values were more aligned with the Liberal Party than the ALP. However, the ALP having learned from its mistakes post WW2, took the Vietnamese in and this greatly assisted their vote in solid core ALP seats such as Dandenong and Footscray.
Unfortunately for the Liberal Party, the blue rinse set from Higgins found it much easier to accept blue eyed blonde Europeans than dark skinned Asians even though the Asians were very hard workers and entrepreneurially minded.
