FAKE SHEIKH: Fears Greensparty ACT Senate candidate Simon Sheikh sought loot from Obeid for GetUp! cash stash

Simonsheikh Sheikh, the former NSW ALP Right faction operative turned ACT Greensparty Senate candidate, is believed to have sought a large donation from controversial multi-millionaire entrepreneur/politician Eddie Obeid to fund GetUp!, a left-wing lobby group that increasingly is seen as a front for the Greensparty.

Sheikh, was a “department liaison officer” for highly-regarded NSW Minister Michael Costa, a key ally of Mr Obeid in their NSW Right sub-faction, the Terrigals. Costa has also played a key role in an Obeid financed water infrastructure firm that has received contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars from the NSW government.

It has been generally understood that former Victorian Labor Right MLC Evan Thornley, whose corporate career recently imploded with ill-fated heavily-loss-making electric car battery charger company Better Place, had initially funded GetUp! and had encouraged Sheikh to get involved with the lobby group. The Sheikh frequently boasted that Thornley had “hand-picked” him to “take GetUp to the next level” using management babble frequently associated with the walking encyclopaedia of McKinsey jargon.

However, VEXNEWS investigators operating in the former convict colony of New South Wales, say that in Sheikh’s reign at GetUp! that he big-noted himself among fellow GetUp! honchos, proudly declaring his capacity to raise money in “big licks” should it be required from unions aligned to the NSW Right, big dudes at Macquarie Bank, once-colossal lobbying firm Hawker Britton and also the multi-millionaire beneficiary of a fortunate fire at Alpine Press print facility, Mr Obeid.

Simon Sheikh is rumoured to have sought a very large donation from his fellow NSW Labor Right “Terrigals” sub-faction member and boss Eddie Obeid

It is strongly rumoured around Sussex Street lazy suzans that a copy of a fundraising letter sent to Mr Obeid, signed off by the Sheikh, is in circulation. The letter is believed to be full of flowery praise for Obeid and his significant contribution to progressive politics. To be fair, this was prior to recent allegations made by the headline-chasing and generally useless NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption relating to a coal resource that just happened to be underneath a farm property that the Obeids just happened to buy as a retirement retreat.

We have not been able to confirm whether Mr Obeid’s notable generosity to political causes extended to GetUp! and believe the letter will – if it surfaces at all – appear closer to the election date, scheduled for September.

Sheikh’s ambitions to snatch and grab an ACT Senate spot from Labor or, more likely, the Libs, have been dealt a blow this week with his clumsy handling of his ALP membership. ALP records, provided to favoured Sussex Street mouthpiece Troy Bramston at The Australian, show the Sheikh was an ALP member for four years. VEXNEWS sources have confirmed he was in fact aligned to the NSW Right, in particular to the Obeid Terrigals sub-faction, during his Labor years. Sheikh lied about the matter initially, insisting he was only a member for one year, today admitting it was two. The party records clearly show he resigned four years after he joined.

Sources close to the Sheikh say he was a rolled-gold ambitious young Sussex Street kid who flipped politically, in a move that coincided with his romp with Anna Rose, a lefty from Sydney Uni turned aggressive Greensparty operative. The Sheikh’s political turnaround from ambitious NSW Right young careerist with framed pics of man-bag carrier Laurie Brereton on his bedroom wall to supposedly idealistic GetUp! and ACT Greensparty Senate candidate is regarded by those who know him as a spectacular and unlikely change that left them wondering about the sincerity of the Sheikh.

  1. What a tangled web he weaves. Asking money from the owner of a property built over rich veins of coal while hooking up with Anna Rose who has worked closely with Clover Moore and Adam Bandt in recent years…

  4. Cutting off ones nose to spite ones face here aren’t we Labor comrades? Firstly Labor sat quiet while Simon was at Getup about his former membership because it suited them which wasn’t a snowy white look. Now though when he’s running for the Senate, his history comes out from Labor.

Just can’t see what the planners at Labor are doing here unless they really think they have a chance at picking up a second ACT seat, so it’s worth undermining the Green’s good prospects. But really? It’s probably a choice between right wing Liberal Zed, or the Greens Simon.

Labor might be fed up and snotty in the extreme with the Greens at the moment, but another Green in the Senate is a better outcome than another Liberal. Six years of right wing Zed is to horrible to be contemplated.

  11. As a joint venture partner with the Sheikh in a couple of Centrelink buildings I urge everyone not to prejudge the Sheikh.

His wife Anna might be a bit preachy but she knows that a big Sydney mortgage doesn’t pay itself off without a bit of solid grifting.

    Vote Sheikh for Senate.

  13. As mulder & scully would say:- the truth is out there! The shiek was pontificating on high and now learns; live in a glass house and what not the throw. Given his labor background in nsw, not surprising really, that lot lost all touch with reality years ago. He has just followed their conduct as normal.

  14. If he can organise funding, he should be Treasurer in the new Labor/Greens vomitus party. Obviously better with figures than the current maths failure.

  15. Pretty disgusting that the fat controller of this site pretends to see and hear no evil in NSW.
“made by the headline-chasing and generally useless NSW ICAC relating to a coal resource that just happened to be underneath a farm property that the Obeids just happened to buy as a retirement retreat.”
This is from the lardarse who continues to pretend that Vic does not need a ICAC equivalent.

  17. Sheikh took Get-Up from a slightly left of centre independently minded lobby group to a Greensparty mouthpiece.

His past should not be held against him as his Damascus conversion appears legitimate. It is quite a long road from Terrigal Rightist to Dark Green and Deep Pink Leftist.

The ACT Senate race is almost certainly going to end up as it always has – one ALP with about 1.4 to 1.5 quotas (48%), one Liberal with just on one quota (34%) and the Democrats then the Greens left holding around 0.5 quotas (17%) and unable to benefit from ALP preferences as both seats have been filled.

There is a reasonable chance that there will be an increase in the Greensparty vote at the expense of the ALP but it is inconceivable that the ALP will fall below 1.1 or 1.2 quotas.

Sheikh will therefore be a curiosity in much the same way as the other thorn in the side of right minded people: Assange.
