FEATHERED NEST: Parliamentarians cry foul over $21 pie and mash

parlhousedining Federal Parliamentarians are not impressed by the prices charged by the in-house catering in their building.

A “Room Service Menu” distributed to Members of Parliament yesterday has been obtained by VEXNEWS. It reveals that a beef pie and mashed potato costs $21.

GET GRAEME SAMUEL ON THE BATPHONE

One MP told us “This is a total rip off by a ruthless monopoly. A pie and mash for $21? Who do they think they’re kidding. The sad thing for taxpayers is that it’s cheaper for us to get a Comcar somewhere outside the building rather than pay $21 for a glorified pie floater (sans mushy peas).”

In Room Dining at Australian Parliament House The sandwiches and baguettes are regarded favourably but unacceptably high in price. Some believe there is a party divide in room service too, with Libs being quite happy to cop the high priced in-house dining while more parsimonious Labor pollies more inclined to pop out to the nearest junk food outlet.

Another observer remarked “I think this is a Canberra problem too. It’s not an inexpensive place to eat.” Others defended the quality of the food at “Members and Guests” saying “you don’t get what you pay for.”

canberrafinedinng There could surely be no truth to the rumour that some MPs send staffers out – in breach of guidelines – to pick up a discount curry or some KFC when Chamber duty prevents their departure. Sources suggest “Chew and Spew” corner in Dickson just down the road from Parliament House has seen more than a few ComCars grace its KFC and McDonald’s drive-through serving facilities.

Twenty one dollars buys quite a lot of KFC and McDonald’s. Or so we are told.

  1. This is what happens when the Comcar shuttle is free. Unaudited trips to Fyshwick.

Not suggesting anything- the Comcar depot is out there.

  2. We plan to open an outlet in APH, close to Mitch Fifield’s office.

  3. No doubt Luke Tobin will start a facebook group to that end, and find himself rightly pilloried first by Landeryou and then by the Soviet.

Followed soon thereafter by a Fifield MPI attacking Labor staffers not agreeing with this or some other policy.

  5. Whilst my hearty doesn’t bleed for the poor Federal pollies it shows what happens when you outsource a catering monopoly to a a snobby rip-off outfit like the Canberra Hyatt.
