FIRST WITH WORST: Michael Johnson’s back in the saddle as political fund-raiser

MichaeljohnsonlibsA leaked document, believed to be the work of former LNP MP for Ryan, Michael Johnson, proposes the formation of a new “serious political party which can successfully challenge safe LNP seats and marginal seats.”

It proposes the party could be called “New Liberals – Liberal values for Queensland” and would presumably target metropolitan conservatives annoyed by the party merger with the Nats. The document is here.

Johnson would not comment on the document, although our source told us:

Michael Johnson is in the process of registering a new party for the upcoming federal election called the New Liberal Party. Having been rejected from standing as Katter’s australia party candidate in Ashgrove some months ago…

Johnson is politically dead but he thinks he will get funding for his party (large funds) to run a hate campaign against the LNP in Queensland in the next federal election. He is getting help from some former staffers, and close supporters, and will field candidates in all federal seats, and the Senate. Johnson is to run in Ryan, as you would expect, with a campaign budget of $300,000. Corflute and brochure art has been completed!

Senior sources within the LNP itself have questioned this, disputing Johnson’s capacity to create a political party and reporting that he appears a little directionless while shuffling around the Brisbane suburb of Toowong. Johnson is believed to be living on his pre-Latham defined benefit parliamentary superannuation and has pursued a number of Oriental business ventures that have gone nowhere.

Others say that Johnson’s “core competency” is fund-raising and that the document is probably aimed at donors in south-east Queensland of Chinese and Taiwanese descent who don’t realise that the party is unlikely to be a huge electoral success.

Johnson was removed – and later expelled – from the LNP over alleged fund-raising and other irregularities surfaced prior to the 2010 election. VEXNEWS first broke the story of him being probed by the party hierarchy at the time and were the first to reveal that he would deselected. First with the worst, as you have come to expect.
