GEORGE CHRISTENSEN: LNP candidate in Dawson thinks “the Jews killed Christ” and doesn’t think much of women, gays or Aborigines either
LNP candidate George Christensen, widely expected to win the Queensland federal seat of Dawson for the conservatives, published a series of virulently racist, anti-semitic, homophobic and woman-hating rants back in1998.
VEXNEWS has learned that the publication “The Student Advocate” was edited by Christensen when he was a student at Central Queensland University. VEXNEWS has obtained a copy of one edition of the “politically incorrect” newsletter of Christensen’s “Conservative Students Alliance” which contains obscene jokes, racially vilifying material and denigrates women as “stupid”.
On one page, Christensen expressed concern that new versions of the Bible were “removing accusations that the Jews killed Christ.”
This accusation of “Jewish deicide” is one of the oldest and most vile anti-semitic conspiracy theories of all.
While Christensen goes to the trouble of telling constituents on his website he was raised a Catholic, he seems to have missed Pope Paul VI’s express rejection of Jewish deicide, one of many absurd notions that underpinned organised attacks on Jews from the pogroms to the Holocaust.
On another page, he tells jokes about AIDS:
“A homosexual walks into the Doctor’s office, sobbing. ‘Doctor, Doctor’, he says ‘ think I’ve got AIDS. ‘Well,’ replied the Doctor, shocked ‘Who gave it to you?’
‘I dunno, says the homosexual. ‘I haven’t got eyes in the back of my head.’
He doesn’t restrict his venom there either. In an article about the Hollywood actor Will Smith, whom the currently unmarried Christensen felt was over-rated by the ladies, he expressed his thoughts on women:
Most Aussie men often try to crack onto good-looking women and neglect the not-so-good looking (read fat) ones
Perhaps it’s the intelligence of women or, rather, the lack of it?
My thoughts: the truth is women are stupid and that’s that. So on behalf of you, me and the guy that’s shrugging his shoulders in bewilderment after reading his sister’s copy of Dolly, let me just say: Will Smith, you’re lucky God gave women no bloody brains.
Other contributions express concern about the special privileges being bestowed Aborigines, the transgendered, republicans and so on. He is even critical of former Prime Minister John Howard for being a sell-out to aboriginal interests. He argues that there is an Australian system of “apartheid”which benefits Aborigines through land rights, Abstudy and so on.
It’s hard to do Mr Christensen’s words justice. And lest anyone think they be taken out of context, check out the whole file courtesy of the hard-working men and women of the famed VEXNEWS Investigations Unit.
TUESDAY UPDATE: George Christensen has apologised for his views and according to Liberal CHQ sources is very lucky that the VEXNEWS Investigations Unit only uncovered this offensive document yesterday. “If we’d known about this before the close of nominations, he would have been punted, no doubt about it but it’s all a bit late now. He’s disavowed those views now, has grown up a lot since University and will be a really solid regional MP if he gets up. I can assure you that you won’t be seeing these views repeated in his MP’s newsletters or anything like that” one Liberal campaign strategist told us this morning. That’s good news.
TUESDAY UPDATE: LNP sources have told us this story was most unfair with one telling VEXNEWS that we’d be much better off focusing on Labor’s candidate in Dawson “Moscow” Mike Brunker who earned that nickname – it is said – after attending the Soviet Union’s 13th Annual World Youth Festival in Moscow as a teenage wannabe union militant. That’s quite the choice the good people of Mackay have before them on August 21st.
TUESDAY UPDATE: Tony Abbott has come out defending his man in Dawson according to the ABC who ran the unsubtle headline ‘Abbott defends candidate critical of Jews, gays, women’:
Questioned about the revelations this morning, Mr Abbott said there was “colourful material” from most people’s university days. “He’s a good bloke and I stand by him,” Mr Abbott said.
WEDNESDAY UPDATE: The George Christensen saga over his obnoxious views revealed here have finally reached a crescendo with Kerry O’Brien on the 730 Report quizzing Tony Abbott about the LNP trouble-maker:
KERRY O’BRIEN: OK. You’ve had to defend your Coalition candidate George Christensen in the North Queensland seat of Dawson today over some stridently anti-Semitic, anti-gay and anti-female comments he either wrote or edited in a university magazine 12 years ago describing women as bloody stupid. There was a joke about a gay man dying of AIDS. How can you defend those sort of sentiments, even if they were a decade ago?
TONY ABBOTT: Well, I don’t defend them. It was – they’re not defensible sentiments. But, Kerry, many of us are guilty of adolescent silliness. Certainly, my uni days involved some statements that I wouldn’t make today. Julia Gillard’s uni days and her days at the Socialist Forum involved statements that she wouldn’t make today. We grow through these things.
KERRY O’BRIEN: Have you bothered to check to with the candidate to absolutely assure yourself – have you bothered to absolutely assure yourself that none of those sentiments still exist in that man’s mind today?
TONY ABBOTT: I have got to know George quite well. He is a good candidate and I know he absolutely repudiates adolescent silliness.
■ One gay group the Coalition of Equality has very graciously accepted George Christensen’s apology too:
“If he has apologised for that particular publication and he’s willing to recant the fact that they were not in the best of taste, and he apologises for them, then I think we should let bygones be bygones and move forward,” he said.
“[We should] make sure that we do understand what is acceptable and suitable comment in regards to gay and lesbian people in Australian.
“We have to accept that what he says now on face value is a sincere and heartfelt apology.
“If in the future, it turns out not to be, I’m sure there will be words said at that point, and embarrassment caused to him.”

The charge of anti-semitism doesn’t quite work. Some PC airbrushers of the Passion accounts do want to down play the strong language against Jesus’ accusers that can be found in the John’s and Luke’s gospel. Many Christians who work hard on interfaith dialogue don’t believe in PC rewritings.

Mr Christensen apologised in Monday’s Daily Mercury, saying: “I regret the statements contained in that newsletter … I apologise without reservation for those dumb comments made as a teenager over a decade ago.â€

Mr Christensen has since apologised, saying the comments were made in jest.
Mr Abbott backed his candidate on Tuesday, dismissing the remarks as “colourful stuff”.
“There’s colourful stuff from my uni days, there’s colourful stuff from (Prime Minister) Julia Gillard’s uni days,” he told reporters in Sydney.
“If there’s colourful stuff from George Christensen’s uni days, I think we just have to accept that uni is a colourful place and move on.”

Mr Christensen says he is sorry for publishing the comments.
He says he has grown up and moved on.
“I apologise for making dumb stupid, comments when I was a teenager and a uni student,” he said.
“We do stupid things when we’re young and say stupid things when we’re young that we live to regret and this is one of those things for me.”
Australian Coalition for Equality spokesman Rod Swift says the comments were offensive, but he accepts the apology.

GEORGE CHRISTENSEN (VOICE OVER): Some of the content I provided for those publications was intended to shock readers or to use humour in a shocking way rather than to provide legitimate commentary. In the process, I published and circulated what were clearly stupid statements which I regret. To those offended by those statements, I apologise without any reservation.
No-one should take seriously statements published in the context of university politics. I have grown up and moved on since then.
OZ’s “ugly george” Christiansen may or may may be the Great Reformer that Austrialia needs but he is (gasp) a Politician. Ranking much higher on the Social Scale is NYC’s cableTV’s Pick-up King, the real Ugly George ( as the Brits would say “chatting up birds”).
