GetUp! doesn’t get it: The Age/SMH are finished, squabbling about who owns them is so ’80s

True to form, the excitable Sheikhs of GetUp! are firing on all electric car cylinders denouncing Gina Rinehart’s acquisition of what will almost certainly be a controlling stake in Fairfax..

GetUp! simply doesn’t get it. What they’re really worried about – their beloved Sydney Morning Herald and The Age being in crazy lady right-wing hands shouldn’t be what ails them. Those newspapers are finished. GetUp’s donors stopped buying the newspapers, stopped advertising in them in the way they used to do, a long, long time ago.

They didn’t support the newspapers and they are terminal.

Bemoaning Australia’s richest woman buying a stake in the company and demanding some say over its future direction is churlish and pointless. No-one, in the long run, will save those publications because the economics just doesn’t add up.

The party’s over. It’s time to move on. Ironically, of course, GetUp’s desire to have the newspapers run on uneconomic grounds could probably only be satisfied by an incredibly deep-pocketed politically motivated patron. Someone just like Gina Rinehart. If she only shared their views, GetUp! would be gladly cheering her share purchase. There’s a deep inconsistency to the far Left’s arguments about Fairfax but before manning (staffing) the barricades, they ought to realise who’s really at fault.

  1. I was around when we saw the demise of metal type and the rise of Pagemaker and the like. Gone were the linotype operators and molten metal typesetting from the newspaper industry. This is another transition in the newspaper industry where, increasingly, newsprint is becomining and anachronism. What form the reportage and information industry will take is unknown at this time. We can only hope that it is diverse, balanced, and presented by people with some moral and ethical values about truth and honesty. God! I’m such a niaive wishful thinker!!

  3. God help poor Fairfax shareholders like me if a rich suitor doesn’t come along soon.
