GREEDY: Obscene HSU salaries approved in review by Kathy Jackson’s mate Beth Jensen

Remember Kathy Jackson’s $270K salary, which even she admitted was obscene? Turns out the “external report” paid for by union members to justify the 100%+ increases was written by her mate Beth Jensen, the wife of her long-time lawyer and family friend David Langmead.

The Temby report into the HSU reveals multiple procurement and other rorts. The release of the full report will make fascinating reading for those watching the HSU disaster-zone.

Not much of what’s been reported so far is new but what stood out is that Mike Williamson’s salary at nearly $400K, and other salaries (like Kathy Jackson and Marco Bolano on $286K and $200K per annum) were massively increased after a review by Beth Jensen, the partner of David Langmead.

Commissioning external reviews of salaries “remuneration reports” is a pretty standard corporate trick for giving a board of directors cover when awarding massive pay increases to company executives. They normally cost an arm and a leg. It’s called ‘value billing.’ Invariably they recommend increases. Often the firm doing the review expects to get other work from those whose increases they’ve justified. In Jackson’s case, in the now well-established pattern of her leadership of the HSU, she got a mate to do the dirty work.

David Langmead is a barrister but is much more than just Kathy Jackson’s favoured lawyer, he has been a Jackson family consigliere and legal adviser for two decades.

Jackson is truly a shameless and venal piece of work. Because she was first to attack her fellow HSU rorters, some in the Sydney shockjock media seem to think she’s a whistleblower. But as the truth of the matter has slowly come out, she barely ranks as the spittle in the whistle.

News last week that’s worth noting for those who missed it is that Jackson has revealed she plans to move to Sydney (possibly selling her multi-million dollar Balwyn compound paid for with HSU members’ money) to run in the NSW branch of the union.

As she’s never worked in the industry, has never even lived in the state of New South Wales before but has fleeced the union for two decades, she considers herself highly qualified to seize control of the union.

Also notable was Jackson’s admission that Fair Work Australia Vice-President Michael Lawler, a former Opus Dei member who had a spectacular mid-life crisis before hooking up with Kathy Jackson, who is paid $8,000 per week by taxpayers, is funding her litigation to appeal the Federal Court decision to terminate her from one of the highest paying salaries in the history of Australian unionism and appoint an Administrator to restructure and clean up the epic corruption she left behind.

  1. Ostracized by the good people of Balwyn and facing an election wipeout in Victoria by members that know only too well about Kathy’s & Jeff’s fleecing methods.Moving to newer pastures in NSW where she will be held in high esteem by two groups, the shock-jocks who thought her shameless ways made good talk-back ratings and the members of HR Nicholls who thought all their dreams had come true when they found an obliging union insider who could do more damage to unionism then they could by coming up with an innovative plan that unions should adopt a corporate structure. After the Jacksons’ had fleeced members in Vic to enjoy overseas jaunts ,acquire luxury cars , houses and lived a life that defies normal accounting practice…moving to NSW in what many see as a smart, key strategic move to stage a national coup of the union which has been Jackson’s only sustenance & realisation she had zero chances employability on an outrageous income in a Vic branch, with her anti-union credentials ,an exit plan to NSW with sideshow Lawler may give her a credibility boost of that just above an episode of the “shire” .

  7. A leaked investigation into the scandal-plagued HSU East union has revealed explosive allegations over the conduct of the union’s general secretary Michael Williamson.

After New South Wales police began examining Mr Williamson last year, the union’s governing council asked barrister Ian Temby QC and accountant Dennis Robertson to look into whether the union’s members’ interests were being properly served.

The final report of their investigation has been now been released.

It paints a picture of a union with lax internal controls, which had scant concern for its members’ funds.

And the report alleges Mr Williamson engaged in nepotism by funnelling union funds to himself and his family.

Mr Temby and Mr Robertson spent eight months investigating HSU East, which is now in administration.

They note the union was riven by factional differences but the investigation has “not entered this territory, fearing it may prove to be a Balkan bog out of which there is no escape.”

The actions of HSU East’s former general secretary and treasurer, Michael Williamson, form the basis of the report.

The main source of the allegations is the HSU’s national secretary Kathy Jackson.

The report shows when the HSU’s Victorian and New South Wales branches merged to form HSU East, her pay rose 66 per cent to about $287,000.

Mr Williamson’s pay rose 25 per cent in the same period to nearly $395,000. But the report found that was not the only income he received from the union.

The union contracted a company belonging to him to provide IT services, and the report suggests the union was its only customer.

It was paid nearly $4.7 million from 2008 to 2011, and was located rent-free at the union’s offices in Sydney.

The report alleges the union’s architect was employed to do work at Mr Williamson’s house on HSU East funds, and the authors canvass allegations of cronyism and nepotism.

A number of Mr Williamson’s family members have worked for the union, and five of them are among its best paid employees.

The authors allege a warehouse in Sydney, which was bought with union funds, appears to have been converted in to a recording studio to be used by Mr Williamson’s son for commercial benefit.

They allege Mr Williamson’s wife was paid nearly $385,000 over three-and-a-half years, on a covert basis, to scan documents.

It appears Mr Williamson did not use a union credit card, but was reimbursed for claims of union-related expenditure.

In the nine months before his resignation that came to more than $56,000.

In one earlier case, he had claimed for four nights at a London hotel, at about $1,200 a night.

The report has found evidence that the union did not take adequate steps to ensure union members were getting best value for their funds.

One company was paid almost $700,000 a year to publish the union’s regular journal, and another $200,000 for a “history project”. But it appears no tenders for the projects were ever held.

A company which provided promotional goods to the union was paid $1,500 to provide 2,000 business cards. The report suggests that is three times higher than the market rate.

Mr Temby and Mr Robertson have made 15 recommendations and say they hope the administrator will take forceful and timely action to return the union to members in a better state.

The recommendations include that the branch:
discourage hiring of family, and instead hire on merit
prepare all its accounts in accordance with the relevant Australian Accounting Standards
draw up rules to prevent union employees from other paid jobs, or give approved second income to the union
calls for tenders to audit its books ‘as soon as is practicable’
rules that union council be no more than 12 directors and only one of those, the general secretary, should be a paid employee of the union
rules that union elections ‘be advertised both early and widely within the union’
undertakes a ‘comprehensive review of its internal controls’

Mr Williamson declined to be interviewed by the report’s authors!

  8. I hope that this clean up of the unions does not stop with the HSU, everyone well knows that they are not the only ‘rotten egg…er apple.’ I would go next to the CEPU NSW P&T Branch father and son tag team duo. This is another branch where lurks all manner of miscreants and maladministration. How much will he and all the manner of stumbling, foaming at the mouth ferals around him cost Australia Post workers before they wake up? He owes us more than 1%, we want ALL our money back. Message to same it’s high time you all took a good long look at yourselves, SD that means you! 11. Sue, it was Kathy Jackson’s fault and there is nothing in the report to suggest anything criminal.

It’s amazing to me the fuss the media have made over this small union compared to the fuss they make over not one criminal charge being laid against the members of the AWB who stole $300 million from Iraqis to give to Saddam Hussein.

I note that McClymont can’t resist another dig at Thomson even though was not not being investigated.

  12. So Kathy is trying to convince people that she is genuinely “shocked” by the Temby revelations which included her “obscene” self awarded $300k salary? and in an act of breathless hypocrisy & chutzpah goes to court to seek orders to reinstate her “obscene” salary on some faux legal proviso that she was denied “procedural justice”- was this after she tried to contact the registrar before the last proceedings? Reminder to all members , does any of this help your case? does it improve your conditions? Will it help you justify the membership you pay to know Kathy Jackson wants her job back to resume her shopping at Bvlgari ?? Once a Scab..

  28. Union members everywhere need to wake up. They should know that they can get legal aid under the Fair Work Act and they can do all sorts of things like have an audit of their union or union branch. They can apply for compensation orders to get their money back and they can sue individual officers who have helped themselves in various ways. No doubt Abbott will not be putting his feet up in The Lodge, the Libs will be having a Royal Commission into unions, it will be far reaching and very thorough (all you over affiliaters get your cheque books out your members will find it very easy to come for you). All you pisshead dogs who think its smart to bludge of your members, make sure you’ve got enough assets to pay back your members. Finally, all you nuffys who have been leaking to Abetz while not being exactly squeaky clean yourselves it’s all about to blow up in your stupid faces see ya.

  29. If there are genuine potential candidates out there, some things to think about:

    1. If the members trust you, you will do well, never betray their trust

    2. Surround yourself with good honest people, not suckholes and apparatchiks

    3. No one becomes a competent union secretary over night. But every great union secretary came from the floor and grew into the role

    4. Dont worry that you dont have the experience, if the members back you will survive and grow

    5. Dont play with the ALP, by all means recognise they are better than the alternative, but keep out of internal ALP politics, and be proud about it – your role is only about the members of the HSU

    6. Hold and attend worksite members meetings, get back to the old way of doing things

    7. Run a full ticket, that is ensure that when a member wants to support you, they know who else to support to ensure you dont have a hostile BCOM.

    8. Vic stick to Vic, NSW stick to NSW, we are very very different, Vics cant afford the rum.

    9. Do not get photographed with anyone named Jackson (including Adrian)

    10. Get a competent office manager from the corporate sector who is union sympathetic.

    11. Give existing staff one opportunity to prove they are loyal to you. If not…… nail a crow to the fence.

    12. You cant be everyone’s friend. But be their leader.

    13. If you dont stand you cant win

    14. Seek advice, but make up your own mind. You have to live with the decisions.

Any wannabes this is bloody good advice. The only thing I don’t agree with is the Vic/NSW thing. This is really old thinking and has been used by the NSW ALP Right in particular to create divisions amongst workers. For the workers all their issues are common and I think they know that some rorting secretary from either state is probably just protecting their own fiefdom and channeling funds to the ALP and into their own pockets. In regards to not being able to afford the rum, maybe that’s because the Vics don’t rort, other than that you absolutely have the formula for a successful run in an election. Love that ‘nail a crow to the fence’ line it’s very vivid.

    Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2012, 19:52
  32. The only way the HSU ( both new NSW and both Vic 1 & Vic 2 ) branches and there members will be able to ensure similar rorting of their funds will never occur again as has been done over the past 10 years are for all vioting members to think carefully and do some research on each candidate to see if their is any connection with either Michael Williamson or Kathy Jackson.
This includes in NSW Bob Hull ( unfortunately as he is really a good bloke ) and in Victoria the obvious Marco ‘ I can’t speak proper English ‘ Bolano and Fluer Behrens.. We members need a REALL clean out of the old brigade and corrupting cultures that went for year under Williamson and Jackson. Kathy Jackson and her folowers can should as often as they like that she is innocent and never been charged or had any allegations raised against her but the fact remains Kathb Jackson has received disgraceful salaries for years and accepted them with open arms, she has used members money financing her frivolous court cases, she has or will shortly as to members money being paid to dodgy people or firms with no receipts, her former husband Jeff also rorted members Monday for years obviously known and condoned by Kathy Jackson. So before she and her followers stand tall and shout her attributes be honest and have a real look at her past.
In these elections vote with your head not your heart and vote for new not for old.

  39. @ Freddy | July 29, 2012, 1:19
What do you mean “Dont play with the ALP”

Disaffiliate from the ALP if you want to survive in the union movement. Unions are just used as a cash cow for the ALP and a dumping ground for all the ALP losers who get tossed out of jobs with a change of government or they are parked in unions waiting for preselections and then elections. While I am not a KJ fan what she has done is exposed that dirty little underworld of unions where members have no say where their money is going. Lot’s of good people have been driven from the union movement by some absolute numpty’s who, because they were well connected got jobs and big salaries they did not deserve while good people got shafted.

    “What is a hostile BCOM?”

The unions branch committee of management, the board of directors equivalent. It’s best to run a full ticket for all positions in a contested election. A clean sweep means you have a totally functional BCOM without some hostile elements loyal to your opponents. You are more likely to get this problem if your union is a player in the ALP. A hostile BCOM can paralyse the union and they will often do just that quite deliberately to destabilise and bring about new elections, this is what has happened in the HSU. It will be harder to get away with this in the future either under a Liberal government or when the new Fair Work amendments are proclaimed. Those who use this tactic (usually from the ALP Right) could find themselves disqualified from holding office if found to have deliberately engaged in destabilisation tactics, rorting, misuse of members money. A few unions are experiencing this attempt at destabilisation at the moment besides the HSU, slowly slowly the lawyers say, don’t move to soon on the frauding little bastards, just wait a little while longer to prove the pattern of behaviour and then get rid of them permanently. Make sure when you take out the unions rubbish that it is burnt completely and cannot be recycled again and again.

If your union is a player in the ALP then you can bet that nowhere near 100% of your money is going on member issues it is lining the pockets of the grubs in the union who are just looking after their own interests while trying to convince you that your (workers interests)lie with the ALP. It really is time for workers to take back their unions, democratise them and clean the grubs out.

    Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2012, 20:32
  40. @Freddy, anyone who has watched the HSU antics over the last two decades recognised the main goal (other than self enrichment) was jockeying for ALP numbers. You cant blame Feeney or Shorten for doing that, you have to blame those who allowed and encouraged them to play.

Zora Marco was once democratically elected as Secretary, but was refused entry to the HSU premises because the BCOM (committee of management) supported Jackson. You cant run a union if the BCOM have you in the gun. The BCOM was split between Fegan and Jackson supporters in more recent times, and imploded as a consequence.

And Yes Freddy, small membership may help, but three tickets is a killer, and that is what got Bolano elected.

@ convergence, anyone noticed that even dyed in the wool Liberal supporters cant stand Abbott, Abetz et al? You are not funny, everyone on here knows that the ALP and the Liberals are on the nose, its just a matter of degree. As for the Greens, they are the ALP version of the Liberals and One Nation. Did you complain when Howard adopted One Nation policies? I am betting not.

    Posted by Freddy | August 1, 2012, 1:05
  46. Whatever the election outcome, nothing turns on it for me. However If I was a shop steward, I would make sure the members in my health service knew who was behind the flashy tickets.

Better still, as I said before, I would make contact with three or four like minded delegates from other big health services and run together as a ticket, each delegate needs to bring several honest members along on the ticket as BCOM members.

Then only worry about the votes from members in those health services.

Elections are notorious for low voter turnout, 30% is the max.

Of the more than 39,000 workers who are eligible for membership of the #1 and #3 Branches, I doubt that 10,000 would be members currently.

    Of those, 3,000 might vote.

Of those, presuming a Bolano ticket and a HSAM ticket, your ticket needs only about 1200 votes to win.

How many members are there at Southern, Bendigo, Ballarat and say Geelong combined? Enough.

Add to that the bonus of members in other health services wanting a fresh start and voting against the old school and you are in.

And that is ignoring the fact that HSU 1 and HSU 3 are separate elections, so 1200 is an overstatement.

Was your choice of “United Voice” a reference to the missos?

  52. Williamson resigned by text yesterday (01 Aug 12). Does this mean he will pay himself his “redundancy” entitlements before any court case or possible gaol time?

  53. Adrian the vile corrupt Pig has probably already EFTed himself a redundancy and all of hs entitlements.

  54. Mighell you had your chances, should have let the Vic branch books be forensically audited and taken your medicine, all too late for Bill to help, it’s gone beyond that and there is now no turning back. The HSU are going to love that the spotlight is no longer on them. Goodbye you will be remembered as the most corrupt union official Australia has ever seen, can’t wait to read Cleary’s tell all book. GFC.

  55. A Melbourne newspapers said today (02 Aug 12)that Williamson daughter Alexandra has also resigned as a Media Officer for PM Julia Gillard. While you cant blame the daughter for the sins of the father was she the one that wrote this monotoned bland speeches from Gillard?

Also the newspapers said that Mrs Williamson was planning a farewell party (from the HSU I assume)for her husband with invitations sent our but later cancelled it. Who would go to it in any case. But it would be interesting to get a copy of the list of invitees.

  67. HSU member Craig McGregor has set up a website for his team, Clean Sweep, contesting the Victoria No.3 elections.

Mr McGregor said his team wanted to “sweep away the entrenched culture of graft and corruption and return the union to members”.

“We are all long-time healthcare workers, with no ties to the HSU old guard factional chiefs, and we believe member control of the union will deliver the best outcomes for members,” he writes on the website.

The group calls for pay rates for officials to be pegged to public hospital wages, greater financial controls and and end to the “snouts in the trough”.

It is understood former union general secretary Kathy Jackson is running a proxy team in all three branches.

Retiring HSU East general secretary Michael Williamson is backing senior officer, Rob Hull, in the NSW-ACT elections.

Former union official Gerard Hayes, who is understood to have the backing of senior NSW ALP figures, has begun campaigning in workplaces on the theme of “transparency, integrity, accountability”.

HSU organiser Stuart Miller is expected to lead a reform team in the Victoria No.1 elections.

  68. Poor old Kathy, like her starving buddies will have to pay almost $100,000 tax on her income. Hence the increase. What a lot of people are missing is. This wrought, to my knowledge being an old member of the TWA and Metalworkers has been going on since the mid 70’s. And as recently exposed by the SMH, previous Labor Ministers and more union delegates have been busted for tens of millions of dollars of the same theft in recent years. Because one dumb bludger decided to buy a Lamborghini. This is fully endemic and has been in the Labor Party and Unions since I was 25 yo. I am now 60. What must be realised is, these are only the ones who are caught. The financials show ALP members retire 50% wealthier than Libs. And ALL union officials retire millionaires. And these bludger’s truly believe they deserve this gift by Australians. They are laughing at the simplicity of entire set-up.
