GREENS LOSE BIG DONOR: ETU boss Dean Mighell promises members “no more money for Greens”

etucashVictorian ETU boss Dean Mighell, whose union-fleet monster-truck is possibly the largest passenger vehicle outside of America’s truck-lovin’ Deep South, has told union members in his election campaign that giving cash to the anti-jobs Greens party was a “big mistake” and that he wouldn’t be doing it again.

Sources on Melbourne construction sites have told VEXNEWS Mighell has backed off from supporting the Greens because of the vehement reaction from his members at their antics. “He reckons he supported them because of the workplace relations policies but won’t be anymore,” one told VEXNEWS on condition of anonymity.

The Greens party snaffled huge sums of ETU members’ money – given to them by Mighell without any consultation with the union membership – and used it to get leverage against Labor to impose its agenda including a carbon tax that could leave many of MIghell’s members out of work.

Mighell has told comrades that he’s confident of beating off rivals in the internal poll but has “copped a great deal of sh*t” for giving the extremist Greens party hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially aimed at assisting Dr Adam Bandt, who has a PhD in Marxist jurisprudence, get elected to the federal seat of Melbourne.

Since Bandt’s election, many community groups in the inner-city Melbourne seat, have complained that “he’s too busy” and that they regard his electorate office as incompetent and unenthusiastic compared with the past Labor MP Lindsay Tanner.

Since the election, Mighell has re-oriented his political support to conservative country independents like Bob Katter, usually seen as a traditional enemy of the Greens on a wide range of issues.

The news comes as News Ltd’s Joe Hildebrand reports that Mighell’s passion for shooting and hunting has put him at odds with the Greens party high command which likes its meat organic or possibly – as previously raised on VEXNEWS – extracted from excrement or not at all.

The ETU Victorian secretary is a long-standing member of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, and told the SSAA’s magazine he owned several guns and loved pig-shooting.

"I love the outdoors and particularly hunting," he said. "Pig shooting is a favourite. However I could stalk a deer all day in the High Country and not take a shot and just enjoy the environment and the freedom of the country we live in."

But VEXNEWS understands that it’s not all scenery all-the-time for Mighell. He told the Australian Shooter also:

“Some of the firearms I own are great bits of Australian industrial and working history.”

Dean is a member of the Victorian Military Rifle Club and says he likes to get down to the range with his old bolt-action Lithgow .303, American M17 and Swedish Mausers.

Fair enough. Shooting’s a perfectly legitimate sport – indeed an Olympic-level one – but it is hard to reconcile these views with the anti-hunting Greens party of which Mighell was once a member and big donor. He told his fellow shooters in terms that would have gone down a treat at Australian Greens national convention:

“I enjoy the challenge of placing a little piece of metal exactly where I want several hundred metres away,” he said.

With fighting words like that, it is no wonder a contested election is a rare treat in the Victorian ETU, provoked as it was by Mighell’s slagging of interstate ETU officials who thought firing back was the least they could do.

  4. Would you trust Dean Mighell. I would prefer to put my tongue on a potential live wire then trust this political self interest opportunist.

Mighell, using Union monies, funded the Greens in the hope that he would get a seat in Club Feb,. When it soon become clear that the Greens would not further Mighell’s political career and that the Greens will lose seats at the next election Dean Mighell now pleads to ETU members, ” Sorry I was wrong and won’t do it again.”

The fact is Mighell contributed to the destabilisation of the Labor Movement, He should not be trusted an put last on any ballot.

Truly, a union leader representing the interest of his members is unusual to the point newsworthy. Informing us of every time he takes a crap, is not.

  12. Shemighell has demanded that the rank and file members take their ballot papers to site so that ETU Officials can ensure that they are filled in correctly, this is intimidating to the members who only want to provide for their families, good thing though the Australian Electeral Commission has been tipped off and will have staff undercover on the larger sites closely watching Stewards and Organisers for any breaches of the Act and any other CRIMINAL activities.

  13. Mighell is a rootin’, shootin’, tootin’ sort of guy. I wonder if the “sh*t” he copped from his union chums included a 303 up the clacker.

As for Bandt; is a “a PhD in Marxist jurisprudence” a double or triple oxymoron?

  14. The AEC really could not care less about what goes on during union elections, they are just interested in the nuts and bolts. They basically leave it to candidates to raise any issues or irregularities in the Federal Court. In the recent CEPU Communications Division elections a defamatory shit sheet was posted to all members, big dollars spent on it. It included a fake newspaper article that looked very convincing and if the members had been idiots they would have fallen for it. Fortunately for the challengers the members are not idiots and they saw it for what it was. In the end the effect was to make members angry and it galvanised a lot of votes for the victims of the smear. The AEC did not want to know about it, their attitude is take it up in the courts. If people are genuinely intimidated I am sure the ALP would love to hear from them, that is what this is really all about. Mighell did not destabilise the labour movement, the ALP did that all on their own. Many unions are now a wake up to the ALP and the way they are leading workers down a really bad road. Mighell is no threat to workers, the ALP is.

  15. Did Dean Mighell say: There is absolutely nothing improper about being a sporting shooter. I like to give my enemies a sporting chance before I go after them.

The list of enemies of the ETU boss is quite long and growing longer. I am somewhat surprised it took him this long to put the anti-gun (and anti-Gunns) Greens on the list.

He gave all this money freely to the Greens because he liked one policy. Well Deano what about the dozens of policies of theirs you do not like!!! but you gave them the money. Our money

  19. I hear Mighell is posting a full page add in Herald scum tomorrow touting further lies (how much does that cost). The newest lies will be pertaining to how members fees are set The no-good dirty dog will try to make members beleive that halving the current rate is not possible, but the reality is that the National Office sets a figure and the states adjust to suit. Some states increase from the national recommendation and some decrease. Don’t believe his bullshit tomorrow. The annual rate can be halved. Who would believe any thing he ever did or said, ever.

This translates to over $50 million per election with most going to the ALP and Libs. Its a rip off and undemocratic. It helps to maintain the status quo which may not be desirable as we end up with medico party hack who do nothing but sit it out until its time to get that parliamentary pension

  27. RE: “Mighell contributed to the destabilisation of the Labor Movement” Oh contraire.
Mighell is strengthening the labour movement by decoupling it from the ALP, who have been ignorantly taking ‘working Australians’ for granted, by appealing to extreme right wing views and policy after policy which favour foreign and financial conglomerates.
The ACTU leaders penchant for Prada cufflinks and exclusive business clubs – pretty well typifies where the mainstream ALP ‘labor movement’ is at.
(Sorry Tim Lyons – thats Prada glasses and tiffany’s cufflinks – Does the fact that union dues paid for them tax free on overseas superannuation junkets now make them Labor Movement attire ??)

  37. Banning political donations is a dangerous and undemocratic move. There are many ways that this would not work – for example, if I donate to Greenpeace (tax deductibly) and Greenpeace provides funding for anti-whaling ads or pro-Carbon Tax ads during an election campaign, is this a political donation?

If you want transparency, the law could require all organisations to disclose all their donations over $100 rather than the recipients to declare them.

It would be a simple matter of a web-site that could be filled in as the donation was made.

For example, as a shareholder I’d be interested in knowing where the National Australia Bank donates – how much does it give to the Opera and how much to the Footy.

I’ve asked and they say it is commercial in confidence. It actually is my money they are frittering away on self-aggrandisement. I should be the one congratulated, not the overpaid CEO who is just a less competent, more overpaid, less hardworking equivalent of a government minister.

How can he possibly do this? If his actions are criminal as alleged here over and over, how could any individual be complicit? You are suggesting that people in the know are bought off, this is itself a criminal act. So are you suggesting that those being bought off are engaged in criminal activity and are themselves so lacking in any integrity they take the money and run?

The She-Mighell would have more hours of accrued annual leave than anyone in the known universe .If you looked in the Guineas book of records. under annual leave accrued there be a photo of the She-Mighell just like there is on the ETU membership card (I agree with you Arsevomit) …Arsevomit.

This despite She-Mighell being O/S for a large majority of the year annually. O/S trips are paid with ETU money ,this is justified as junkets on union business Yes even the trip with the transsexual incident was paid by ETU members.

On other occasions when She-Mighell is absent on leave(this is quite often) on his return he claims he had to take a few work related phone calls so he instructs ETU management to reinstall any leave he has taken back onto his Annual leave total.

So he has never actually ever taken leave

    Great rort.

Do the maths 5 weeks a year at 24 years. An accrued amount that grow every time She-Mighell gives himself a huge pay rise (this is also quite often

  66. If you go one annual leave for say 3 weeks and during that time you have to take a couple of work related phone calls you should by rights get all the annual leave time you taken (3 weeks worth) put back on your annual leave total.
Its true I asked Maurice Blackburn.. so after 24 years at 5 weeks a year and a dozen or so work related phone calls why would it be so bad for someone to have over a quarter of a million dollars worth of annual leave accrued, there nothing wrong with that. Maurice Blackburn said so.

And then if you take the annual leave you never actually took (remember the phone calls) as a huge amount of cash money when you have to leave your position in a hurry there nothing wrong with that . That what Maurice Blackburn said.

Cashing in Annual leave isn’t an anti union thing to do at least that what Maurice Blackburn told me

Dilemna, I am a national official passed over for the top job, so zero credibility and little too show for my years as a national ETU official. What to do?

Ok cobble together a ticket with a bloke that the Queensland Branch Sec allegedly wanted out of his branch (that’s mates for ya). Still zero credibility, what to do?

Consult NSW Right. Advice, you really don’t want people to vote, decomcracy really does not suit union elections so you need to deter as many people as you can.
    1. Shit sheets, the more obnoxious and untrue the better, here you depend on the gullibility of members to believe the more outrageous claims.

    2. Create stupid websites following the formula that hundreds of NSW Right operatives(read idiots straight out of University with Degrees in ‘Communications’) a) Create a crisis b. Devise a solution for the non existent crisis c. Ask for members help to solve the manufactured crises by participating in a solution, usually a petition. Once again this depends on hoping that members are gullible enough to fall for it.

    3. Go off to court on some spurious grounds in the hope this will impress the members, this is now known as ‘doing a Thomson’ and we can all see what a success that has been for him. The court move is meant to lend credibility where there is none.

Hope all of this prevents people from voting, hope they are so shitted off with claim and counterclaim they do not know what to believe.

If all else fails hope that one of my many backers in the ALP gives me a job for my trouble, afterall I have stepped up out of desperation to do the job of making sure all those assets and all that money go back to the coffers of the ALP. We have to make sure we can continue to put people into unions and into parliament that have never had a job outside a union or the ALP. That gets harder and harder to do the less credible the ALP becomes so it will take more money, more stupid websites and campaigns, more spin and that all costs. We cannot have unions like the ETU going independent or what will the unworthy do for cash?
