GREENSPARTY THATCHERITE: Council wannabe Eve Fisher wants to slash council jobs, services and staff wages

EvefisherGreensparty council candidate in Victoria’s Surf Coast Shire Torquay Ward journalist and roller-derby enthusiast Eve Fisher has surfed into dangerous waters, prompting an industrial scandal after intemperate and ill-considered remarks in her desperate bid to be elected. She has foreshadowed deep Campbell Newman-style cuts to jobs and services at the council and has even refused to rule out wage cuts for council staff. Naturally, she has not proposed a reduction in the amount of ratepayer loot received by councillors.

The union is unimpressed with her antics:

The Australian Services Union is appalled at reports that Greens party council candidates canvassed job and wage cuts at a Surf Coast Shire candidate’s forum last night.

ASU Secretary Brian Parkinson said that reports of Torquay ward Greens candidate Eve Fisher calling for a “dirty great audit of council employees” were particularly alarming given that she then refused to rule out job or wage cuts.

“Our members are often stretched well beyond what could be considered reasonable and as members of local communities themselves often go the extra yard to serve their local communities. To have a candidate from a self-described progressive political party follow this path and treat our members as political cannon fodder is unacceptable.”

“I have had reports that Fisher was specifically asked by a member of the audience to rule out job or wage cuts and she would not. This is improper and given that any unilateral wage cuts would be illegal, this action from a member of a registered political party seeking to hold office is unacceptable.”

“I call on State Greens Leader Greg Barber to show that the difference between conservatism and conservationism is more than a few letters of the alphabet. He must act to ensure members of his party do not attempt to gain council positions by denigrating workers and I call on him to discipline his candidates in the Surf Coast and any others thinking of doing the same.”

“I find it particularly disturbing that only after the ballot papers in the Surf Coast Shire have already been mailed out do we here of council candidates looking to chop jobs and conditions. This is classic State Liberal-style politics and we don’t want or need it in Victorian local government.”

  2. Maybe she should learn the rules about being a councillor. They have no say in employing anyone or setting wages, other than the CEO. And in fact the Local Government Act says that a CEO can go to the Minister if the councillors dont give him enough money to do the job in the budget. Greens are such luddites and ignorant on most things.

  3. It is about time that Councillors stood up to the costshifting from federal and state to local Councils. Our Rates keep getting higher and higher every year and are paying for Things that have nothing to do with Council.

  4. I think the Greens are unsustainable. They are not an extreme left party but just like the Dumocrats. Brought up to believe they should rule the world but not enough money to actually do it.

Good to see a Union leader actually leading from the front and calling out the Greens. Take note Dean M ETU man.

    Vote 1 Brian Parkinson

  6. At meet the candidates meeting in Kensington last Wednesday the Greens response to residents concerns at the level of noise emanating from trains in West Melbourne was to undertake an environmental impact study.

Community candidate Anthony van der Craats rejected the idea of an impact study stating that “We know the effects of EM radiation and noise from trains. We do not need an impact study. We need action. Good design and development. Build sound barriers on train lines where they are close to housing as we do for freeways.

The money spent on environmental impact studies is better spent providing solutions not reports”

    Makes sense to me

  7. You foul holier than thou greens (you don’t deserve a capital), your filthy misanthrope policies have stopped mining projects now good people are out of work, especially in Perth. Don’t worry I know you are happy inside about this but when the tax base violently contracts your precious social justice policies will be the first to go then your hairy armpit collectives will be on the scrap heap. Goodbye foul greenies your demise will be celebrated by all.

  9. The Greens are pro people smugglers. They do not care about refugees. If they did they would say no to the queue jumpers and no to people-smuggling. Under the Greens policy we should have a ferry running between Indonesia and Darwin with free passage to those who do not have a visa.
