GROWING UP: SBS emerges from hater darkness to the broad, sunlit uplands of inclusion for Israel

SbsgrowingupA leading Israeli newspaper Haretz has run a lengthy discussion about the extent of support for the Jewish state in Australia, concluded that there’s largely bi-partisan political support for the Middle East’s democratic success story but that some elements of the media continue to be very hostile.

The whole article is behind a paywall, so with permission, we’ve republished it here, as it’s an interesting take on it and sticks it to Fairfax, and The Age in particular, for its long history of antagonism to Israel. Of course, prior to Israel’s founding The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age were also quite frequently hostile to Jews and ethnic minorities as a whole but that’s another story. The sad truth is that there are – our investigations have revealed – plenty of people at Fairfax who are perfectly balanced and reasonable on the Middle East, but they certainly keep the light hidden under a bushel, as it were.

It also calls out SBS for some of its past errors, which is fair enough. They’ve had some doozies. The airing of the communist Vietnam regime’s nightly news service to Australia’s community of Vietnamese who fled it remains a personal highlight. Even the unsubtle VEXNEWS Investigations Unit could see that decision was just a little insensitive. They pulled the broadcast eventually after many rallies and protests.

But we’re really pleased to say there’s growing confidence among the Jewish community that the SBS is really turning the corner away from being blatantly anti-Israel in its bias to adopting a more even-handed and inclusive approach. Many think it represents a broader shift away from undergraduate indulgence at SBS toward making sure it fulfils its taxpayer-funded mission of broadcasting content of relevance to all the staggering diverse communities that comprise the nation.

The huge community backlash over the screening of a nasty, not even slightly entertaining, viciously anti-Israel hatchet-job series “The Promise” appears to have prompted a re-examination of whether a public broadcaster should be so strident in its criticism of one country or whether it should favour inclusion, accuracy and support for those who share Australian values.

Senior Jewish community sources have told VEXNEWS they are delighted with the CEO of SBS being willing to listen to all voices on the Middle East situation. They explain that a visit he made to Israel last year appears to have opened the multi-cultural network’s eyes to some of the compelling content coming out of Israel’s small but vibrant TV and film industry.
When the SBS CEO was in Israel in November last year, he saw terrorist rocket attacks on civilian targets in Israel  at first hand and was reportedly struck by the diverse and cosmopolitan nature of Israel.

The first exciting product of  the more open-minded approach by SBS is its broadcast of a new 10 part Israel drama series called “Prisoners of War,”  which airs on Saturday 19th of January at 8.30pm and will run for 10 weeks. It looks epic.

It’s a gut-wrenching, compelling and magnificent production that those who are hooked on Ten’s Homeland will really love as it is the series that inspired the US drama.

Prisoners of War is the highest-rating drama show on Israeli TV ever. And won every possible Israeli TV industry prize.

SBS’s new discovery of Israel as the incredibly fascinating, intensely and brilliantly political and wonderful place it really is rather than how it is presented to be by its enemies is the best news we’ve heard in a long, long time. More power to their arm.

  1. Like “The Promise” I will probably watch “Prisoners of War” if not only to see Israeli war mongers in gaol and their wives entering adulterous whore relationships while hubby is in the slammer.

“Homeland”, which I did not watch, was copies from the POW series the SBS promo said. Trust the Yanks to copy someone else’s ideas. They have been doing it since about 1910 in film.

  5. Not really. What is interesting is that SBS consistently screens films that are critical or about Israel on a Friday night or during the Sabbath on Saturday

  6. Geez you’re a gross caricature Adrian.

Try and go one day without hating on people, you might find that it’s a nicer world and it will give you hope that you won’t die alone and reviled.

the jew the ultimate car salesman; perverts your needs to suit his own; will sell you mud’in a tube and call it his own ; can i post your mud back to Palestine, jew?

can i post my hatred here? perhaps like neo we will discover an alternate reality, your real agenda “the homocide of palistine ”
can i say what i want to say?

jew, i hate your lobby; your foul testosterone has a stench older than your religion ; whats that old saying

‘the closer you get to a jew the more showers you have to take’

  10. JJP – There are 23,000,000 Australians but only 80,000 Hebrews in Australia. SBS is for all Australians.

Friday and Saturday nights are a good time to watch films if one is not going out. Anyhow Prisoner of War is on Sunday night.

I was just channel surfing and every time I do boring Seinfeld is on.

  17. I support the right of a homeland for the Palestinians and I wish they could like in peace and prosperity in Syria and Lebanon instead of trying to claim land that belongs to Israel. Israel is a democratic, moderate, free enterprise country that provides a homeland for Jewish people as well as allowing the families of settlers who lived there in 1949 to remain with full rights.

This intractable problem would not exist if the Arab spring had blossomed into full multi-party democracy and the separation of church and state was the norm in the Arab world.

It is commendable that SBS is starting to redress its previous bias against Israel.

Despite the bile expressed by Adrian Jackson, I believe Australia is enriched culturally, philanthropically, economically and socially by the Jewish community.

I do agree with Adrian that the perennial re-runs of Seinfeld are starting to grate a bit but some of those oft-repeated episodes are still just pure gold of classic comedy.

  19. Melbourne Ports MHR Michael Danby after saying he supports the local gay community, including a happy snap on the back page of MCV magazine with a populate transsexual in 2007 and reused in 2010, he abstained in the vote in parliament on gay marriage.

Unfortunate he forgot to ask the trannie in 2010 if they could use her photo again because had he done so he would have found out the poor “woman” died a year earlier.

  21. Why are Daniel’s comments deleted and the lunatic antiSemitic drivel of others allowed to remain in these comments? Do you have any standards for posting comments?

    Posted by Karl Marx | January 18, 2013, 9:17
  22. Edmond, for your information during the two great wars, Jewish Australians enlisted and died for Australia out of proportion to their numbers. And the great war hero General Sir John Monash was Jewish.

Look at a bit of Australian Jewish history, Jews have contributed to Australian society proportionally more than any other group. I suggest you do some proper research before you spew out your racist bigotry.

What have you against Jews any way?

  23. I also would have liked to read Daniel’s comments, if only to balance out the moronic musings of Adrian and Marilyn, not to mention Edmind’s never-ending diatribe…

And the show is definitely airing on Saturday nights! But those who have to the ability to read and comprehend would already know that…

  24. Karl Marx and ABM – I read Daniel’s posts before they were deleted but I think they were an imposter Dan Lewis.

The real Dan Lewis lives in Rushcutter Bay, NSW and the deleted comment was talking about dogging in the toilets in Catani Gardens in St Kilda. Tubby little Michael Danby MHR sometimes visits the gardens during the Gay Pride March. It is the only exercise he gets.

I to like reading Dan Lewis’s comments but I assume he is away in Israel with his M-16 for Xmas visiting his relations and hoping to shoot a few Palestinians children with his cousins.

    Posted by Adrian Jackson | January 18, 2013, 14:06
  25. Peter Cohen – Yes General Sir John Monash was a great Australian as a WW1 senior army officer (Commander of the Australian Corps with 5 Divisions) and civil engineer (SEC and Anderson St bridge etc) too.

He was of the Jewish religion and Prussia by nationality (well his parents were actually). At the start of WW1 he asked his relatives not to talking German at home.

  26. I watched POW on SBS last night – Hoo, Hum, Yawn.

The teenage children in one family were real drop kicks.

  27. Spot on Adrian it is about time those Kikes got over it. If they were not genetically inferior it might not ever had happened.

  28. Unfortunately someone has been spoofing my name.

Looks like I missed Adrian Jackson giving people a military history lesson. Oh, good one Aids. Rear-Admiral Jackson is one of Australia’s most prominent military failures. His epic hopelessness would be studied at ADFA except nobody ever heard of him after 20 odd years of going nowhere.

Adrian hates Jews because they are nearly all more successful than him and the typical Israeli 18 year old has achieved more militarily by their third week in the IDF than Jackson did in his lifetime.

BTW Adrian, I don’t need to shoot Palestinians. Like every other group of Arab/Muslim barbarians, they are more than capable of killing each other with no outside assistance.

He and Marilyn should hook up and live happily ever after in his Jews-banned Bed and Breakfast, using her dole money for sustenance.

And THAT, ladies and Gentlemen is how the real Dan Lewis rolls.

  29. I watched the Promise when it was on SBS. I found the acting and dialogue quite stilted. The device of having two parallel narratives – the British soldier serving in 1940s Palestine and his granddaughter retracing his footsteps in today’s Israel – made the whole thing a bit lengthy and cumbersome.

I thought the reaction from Jewish groups was over the top though, particularly the Nazi comparisons. The fact was that the Jewish underground treated kidnapped British soldiers every bit as bad as Daniel Pearl was by the Taliban. I suspect they were upset that The Promise did a fair bit in bringing these historical episodes to light.

  30. “The fact was that the Jewish underground treated kidnapped British soldiers every bit as bad as Daniel Pearl was by the Taliban”

    1) Daniel Pearl, like so many victims of Islamists, was a civilian, so your comparison to British soldiers is already flawed.

    2) I’d be pleased if you could refer me to the footage of British soldiers having their heads sawn off and then film of this published as propaganda. You’ve directly compared the two cases so it’s now time to put up or shut up.

  31. I recently saw a few photos on a mobile phone of the Michael Danby and others from the City of Port Phillip attending the anniversary of the death of Albert Jacka VC.

Capt Jacka VC was a 1st AIF serviceman and later was Mayor of St Kilda during the depression. He died of a heart attack at a council meeting.

At the St Kilda Cemetery with Danby was Queensland MHR and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Peter Slipper. Danby and Mellor were the two ALP MHR’s who escorted Slipper to the speakers chair a few years ago.

It would be interesting to find out why Slipper was in Melbourne with Danby. Was he on holidays or was a relative in the 14th Bn 1st AIF or is he joining the ALP.

Danby has so few friends in politics so perhaps they are follow travellers.

  33. How come Israel is not honouring their UN obligations by take some of the Syrian refugees like Jordon, Lebanon and Turkey do.

Is Israel racist as they just don’t care about anyone who is not a Hebrew.

    Posted by Adrian Jackson | January 27, 2013, 14:52
  34. Well Dan, the said British soldiers were held, in the dark, in a space that was the size of a filing cabinet, for almost a month. Then they were dragged out, lynched and had their corpses booby trapped with explosives.

Perhaps you think that’s just dandy, in which case, good for you.

    Posted by Bab | January 27, 2013, 16:26
  35. Hey jacko
You must be smoking those funny cigarettes why the hell
Would Israel want to take in refugees from Syria.
Best let them fight amongst themselves .

  36. Strangely enough Adrian Jackson, 20% of Israel’s population is Arab and, in the country’s latest election held last week, a number of Arabs were elected to its Knesset (Parliament). Israel has had Arab Ministers and Supreme Court Judges and is the only true democracy and non racist country in the region. It’s the policy of Hamas and Fatah to destroy Israel and kill Jews which it appears is the main reason why the monsters who run them are so appealing to you and your type.

    Posted by Karl Marx | January 27, 2013, 17:08
  37. Bab – They also murdered every man, woman, child, and animal, after they entered Jericho in old testament times, as a offering to God. The fairy story about the trumpets causing the walls to fall was only a ruse to disguise this war crime

Michael Burd – your beloved Toorak is full of wealthy druggies.

Karl Marx – The Arab Israelis are not refugees they are 2nd class citizens of Israel aren’t they? The Syrian refugees are who I am talking about.

    Posted by Adrian Jackson | January 27, 2013, 22:38
  38. Bab,

It’s easy to make up as many horror stories to suit your dishonest narrative.

It’s a lot harder to answer my earlier challenge though, isn’t it mate?

The beheading of Daniel Pearl, a civilian murdered merely for being Jewish, and broadcast on the Internet is not really the same as fairytales. At least you’ve got Adrian all excited though. Good on you.

    Posted by Dan Lewis | January 28, 2013, 8:01
  39. Adrian the biblical story of Jericho is most probably a myth. I doubt whether many modern Jews actually believe it. That story is not in the Torah anyway.

Israel did take in refugees from Dafur, ones the Egyptians reused to accept. Israel has also become a home for the Bah’ai and the Druze who were welcomed. These faiths are offshoots from Islam and were persecuted in their own countries, along with Christians and Jews, in fact anyone who is not a Muslim.

Why don’t you protest about that, people might think that you are harbouring prejudices against Jews.

    Posted by Peter Cohen | January 28, 2013, 12:40
  40. Karl, That’s 20 % too many 5 th Columnists living in Israel if the Jewish state is so bad why don’t they [ The Arabs] go in and live in Hamasastan, Syria, Egypt , Libya, Jordan or even Londonastan?

Perhaps Jacko it could be because the Jewish state a democracy allows Arabs to participate in their parliament as MPs notwithstanding these same Arab/ Israeli MPS side with the Pal-terrorists and probably even plot with them.
Hey Jacko ,How Many Jewish MPs are there in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, Somalia. Pakistan Malaysia, Indonesia.
How many Jewish Mps will there be in a Future ‘ Islamic state of Palestine” as per the Requirement of the Hamas Charter ?
Yeh Jacko I wonder why so many illegal Muslim Africans bypass Egypt and try to get into Israel for work.. perhaps its because its unlikely their hands will ever be chopped off and perhaps because no matter whether they are Shea or Sunni they will be able to freely pray in their mosque without fear of being blown up by fellow Muslims..
