HOWARD’S WAY: Former Prime Minister to be honoured by thinktank but frenemies not happy

howardinc The Sydney Morning Herald reported this morning that a John Howard Institute is to be created involving some of the biggest names in conservative politics in NSW.

It could emerge as a major thinktank and serve as a real catalyst for policy debate.

The King of Sydney radio, Alan Jones on 2GB, has lent his support to the proposed Howard Institute.

What puzzles us is how or why the below email was sent to us and to the Herald and by whom. We understand that many emails relating to the group are currently in circulation and suspect foul play. Sadly enough, the hacking of private email is a reasonably serious crime and – VEXNEWS understands – this incident will be referred to relevant authorities, including the Police for investigation.

We assume it was done by someone hoping to undermine the creation of the group, which strikes us as a shame. Liberal sources say that forces aligned with the Hawke/Campbell faction were responsible for the cyberattack and are keen to derail the formation of the group by painting it as a factional vehicle when it was not intended to be.

Some have speculated it was a cunning plan to get free publicity for the vehicle, in which case it has certainly worked, although these publicity benefits appear not to have been intended.

Insiders have told VEXNEWS the group will be more creative, active and lateral than the traditional thinktank too, embracing campaigning on certain issues and themes, particularly enthusiastically pursuing what they say was the unique Howard mix of “economic liberalism” and “social conservatism” that won him four elections and a narrow miss on a fifth.

Interestingly, while the founder, a politically ambitious young lawyer Noel McCoy’s effort was being undermined by factional foes, the other side thought it a perfectly good initiative according to Deborah Snow:

The director of the Labor-oriented Whitlam Institute, Eric Sidoti, said it would be ”terrific” to have a Howard Institute to add to the mix and that the government should support it.

Subject: John Howard Institute

Dear Alan

It was a pleasure meeting you today.

Thank you for agreeing to be a member of the advisory board of the proposed John Howard Institute. I am delighted to have you on board!

I am aware that you have a busy schedule and as such, becoming an advisory board member would not involve a significant time commitment. In that regard, the three individuals responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Institute are Tom Switzer, Nigel Freitas (a banking executive and Liberal Party member) and I.

The role of the advisory board will be lending their ideas, advice and community good-will to help build the Institute’s reputation and credibility. The primary requirement would be to attend a half-yearly board meeting to oversee and advise on the establishment and operations of the Institute…

Once again, thank you for your support. I will be in touch in the near future.

Kind regards

Noel McCoy

  8. John Howard was an evil, evil man.

My progressive Jesuit mates and I think that the “Pacific Solution” was a thinly veiled attempt at state sanctioned racism. His inaction on climate change, human rights and gay rights was deplorable.

The sooner this horrible conservative’s legacy is eradicated from the Liberal Party the better.

When Noel McCoy creates something he would rather call the PopeTank just to claim that his a Howard support its attracts Media attention.

This is clearly a move by David Clarke and Noel McCoy who hated Howard for not being Conseravtive enough to gain some ‘cheap’ political clout out of using his name.

Your not the real Right you crazy Talis’s! Your fanatics and should be expelled from the party.

  13. If this initiative provides a solid base for genuine conservative growth within the Liberal party, then wonderful.
What’s clear is that the current small ‘l’ liberal wing of the party, best exemplified by Malcolm Turnbull, is a political ‘weight in the saddle bags”
Abbott has consolidated the conservative base and is threatening to take Labor’s blue collar base, Old Labor, whose primary concerns are equity and jobs.
The contrast between Abbott and Turnbull, and all they respectively represent, could not be more stark.

  17. This isn’t the first time Hawke’s new groupers have shown their true lefty colours and poured cold water on true conservatives attempting honour conservative statesmen and ideals.

We all know about the time last year when Sasha and Farlow cancelled the a new members event that some conservatives organised (I concede that it was without Farlow’s approval) with the now opposition leader Tony Abbott because they believed he was “too conservative”. Fast forward to 2010 when Tony is in a position of control within the party and it’d be rare to find an occasion where these blowabouts wouldn’t profess their undying love for Tony.

It was only this year that David Clarke (who’s only crime to date has been the fact that he is a pro-life, practicing Catholic) was branded as an “Ultraconservative, orthodox catholic, religious zealot” in a smear campaign perpertrated by the new group in their favoured outlets in the Left wing media like the smh and the abc. One wonders if any of the new groupers would have the balls to get up and accuse Tony Abbott of the same “crime”.

As the noble Bernie Finn MP pointed out Hawke and his rabble are nothing but a bunch of CINOs (Conservatives In Name Only) just riding particular ideological waves within the party. If Tony were to lose the upcoming election and was replaced by (God help us) Turnbull or Hockey we could only expect them to return to their former more “moderate” selves.

  22. Vexnews, this is stupid reporting. If someone hacked Noel McCoy’s email – the factional hack – I hardly think that this would be the only email that they released.

This has obviously been leaked by Noel himself to gain publicity and try to present others in the party as Howard-haters.

But aren’t Alex Dore and Sasha Uher coordinating a John Howard Debating Competition in honour of John Howard’s great service to the party and country? And didn’t the Sydney University Liberal Club executive just make John Howard the club’s patron?

The correct grammar Mr McCoy is,…..(a banking executive and Liberal Party member) and ME.

  47. “David Miles says he has the ‘energy, determination and experience’ to be a NSW Senator for the Liberal Party. Is that the ‘energy’ to further spread and entrench sexual dysfunction in Australia? Is that the ‘determination’ to normalise sex for people too young to make good decisions, abortion-on-demand, pornography and prostitution? Is that the ‘experience’ to be a voice for the radical fringe in the Federal Parliament?

When choosing a Senate candidate the Party must also think of preferences. What will the Christian Democrats, the Democratic Labor Party, Family First and any Independent conservatives think of David Miles’s candidacy? With Green preference flow favouring Labor can the Liberal Party afford to poke a finger in the eye of the pro-family Senate groups by nominating such an extreme candidate?

David Miles is running for the wrong party. He should nominate for the Australian Sex Party. They are much closer to his intellectual tradition.”

  50. This is clearly a plot designed by Hawke and Campbell to de-rail the efforts of the David Clarke-led conservatives. One has to seriously wonder what the logic is behind these tactics? What purpose will it serve to make it known that an institute honouring a former PM is linked to a factional war, that is now likely to be kicked off again. Good work. I bet Barry will be pleased that his efforts will overshadowed by this crap.

If this institute has been tainted, ruined, whatever! we have to seriously look in the Hawke/Campbell direction. Once again, Machiavellian tactics being employed to stop the good work being done by the other side. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

And for those Liberal party members who are genuine in their belief of honouring the Howard legacy, well they should seriously ask whether these people belong in the party at all, after this disgraceful state of affairs.

I think Nick Campbell should be made to answer why he authorised the leaking of such information, from HIS faction. And John Howard’s office should be asking Campbell to explain WHY he wanted to cause such distress to such a revered Liberal and conservative icon. This also has Scott Farlow, and Alex Hawke’s fingerprints all over it too. After all, Scott Farlow now works for Hawke. By all accounts, Farlow has plenty of free time on his hands now. Trawling the internet for dirt on David Clarke and other people closely associated with the conservative side of the party.

And so much for all of the advice John Howard gave and offered to you, Alex. It obviously means jack-shit to you now… just like every other person who has helped you. You have to seriously have a screw loose if you make it your duty to go out of your way to harm, humiliate and destroy the people who have helped you over the years, and who are, as a result of YOUR actions in the first place, now against you. And you wonder why you’ve copped a shellacking from Alan Jones? It looks like you might just be getting another hiding, because you’ve probably just pissed off Alan Jones again, by your actions. You are a disgraceful gutter human-being. And why the members of the Liberal party aren’t rising up to remove you, and your hapless bunch of cronies is absolutely beyond me! But time will tell if you ultimately survive. I don’t think you’ll survive now, having seriously pissed of John Howard as well. Good work mate! You’ve proved beyond all expectations that you REALLY do not belong in the Liberal party at all.

  56. You know the Hawke/Farlow-led faction is pathetic when they degenerate to bottom of the barrel slurs on a person on the other side of the fence, on a web site such as this. I think Hawke should have his committee vice-chairmanship questioned given his history of leaking sensitive details, including the establishment of a former PM’s institute. Fancy going out to try and destroy a former PM from within your own party. Beyond belief! How anyone can stand by after this and allow such a person, with all the substantiated evidence, that points directly to The Hills, and allow this man to hold his seat, and be rewarded with a committee membership, let alone the vice chairmanship. Who are the members of parliament that voted to allow this bloke to take such a position. Surely they have some answering to do. If they endorse this blokes membership on the committee, surely they must support his actions in undermining a liberal icon and hero to the liberal party. Who the bloody hell does this bloke think he is? It’s time that this brash clown is jettisoned out of his seat. And frankly, the people who have rallied and supported him, namely Natasha McLaren, Scott Farlow and Nick Campbell should be shown the same fate.
