ICECAPADES: Greg Barber goes ga-ga over glaciers in Iceland and uses taxpayer funded phone to tell everyone

gregbarberonice Clever Greens party upper house Victorian MP Greg Barber MBA MLC is in Iceland, to look at glaciers and – wait for it – to see how the Greens party is rescuing the island from its deep financial funk. With economic friends like that, the hocked isolated isle hardly needs enemies.

Nothing wrong with escaping Melbourne’s winter, although some would question his choice of destination as being rather frosty. Such are the ways of the zealot who knocked back the kind offer of a 4WD Parliamentary auto – and even snubbed a Pious Prius as being too unsound – for a go everywhere Parliamentary train pass with his name and pic.

glaciers Barber went up there no doubt to learn about how man-made global warming was melting all the ice (despite all inconvenient evidence to the contrary) and that we are all doomed unless we follow Greens party policies on banning pet shops, shutting selective state schools and making brain-numbing ganja freely available.

The glaciers are of course not in the centre of well-known party town Reykjavik. They are a fair way off the beaten track. And yet due to the wonders of modern technology and taxpayer funded global roaming broadband mobile data services, Barber was able this morning to keep his Greentard followers fully briefed on the full extent of his slipping and sliding on glacier tongues and such. We hear they are pretty impressive but Barber was really going ga-ga.

Those familiar with the pricing of these things say the cost of Twittering and surfing from Iceland via its expensive telco must have been about $5 a tweet.

Barber made them count with observations like:

“this is a cosmic mindf*ck”

“can’t believe I’m getting mobile coverage”

“just had a great mtg with some icelandic green party members at parliament. They’re steadily pulling the country out of financial crisis.” (LOL, if you believe that there’s a glacier he’d like to sell you)

looking at a crazy landscape – volcanos poking through ice sheets. If we ever colonise Mars we should send the Icelanders to do it.

got fronted by a couple of mormons by the lake – they’re now playing frisbee with the headbangers.

Glad he’s having a nice time.

  7. We need someone to lodge a complaint about this to the Speaker of the Upper House – and if that doesn’t work, the State Ombudsman.

Unfortunately I can’t do it for my own reasons…

  8. I once organised a community pre-election forum and invited Barber and the other candidates to speak.

Barber takes the stage to address the crowd of working class, outer suburb mums and dads. His first sentence…

“I caught the bus here tonight.”

(guy in the back row)”want a medal?”

    *raptourous laughter*

His face went as red as his hair and it was all down hill from there on.

  9. Stop this nonsense. The Greens are dangerous Communists that need to be stopped. The problem is the alp left always try to suck up to them. The funny thing is that if the greens were serious why don’t they take on the tories instead of progressive alp candidates in the inner city?

  10. Well done to Greg for an own goal. As a Government member in the LC perhaps I wont have to listen to his lectures about accountability any more. A quick review of hansard reveals 16 speaches on Government Waste, 17 on accountability, 3 on Executive Accountability and 34 lectures on the responsibilities of Executive Government.

  16. Mr. Vexnews, have you any idea what would happen if those glaciers do melt? You’d be hoping you weren’t living in a coastal area.

You appear to think that man made global warming is a bit mythical, and refer to ‘inconvenient evidence’. Would that be evidence provided to us by enlightened Evangelists? Simple souls who believe the planet is 6000 years old, and that Dinosaur fossils were put there by God to test our faith! By the way they also believe that virgins give birth, that all humans descended from Adam and Eve (and they had two sons!!!), and that the planet was formed from scratch in 7 days.

Or perhaps scientists of no integrity willing to say anything they are paid to say by Industry?

Granted the global temperature has fluctuated over millions of years, however overwhelming SCIENTIFIC evidence suggests that the current increase is man made.

There will always be dissenting views to any fact. For example some deny that we ever landed on the moon, and some deny that the Holocaust ever happened. Do we take such views seriously?

Fact: forests convert Carbon Dioxide into oxygen, they were not meant to be wiped out on a large scale. The atmosphere was not meant to be pumped full of toxic chemicals by archaic industry, nature has no inclination to accommodate the pursuit of profit.

Instead of making such flippant assertions, articulate a scientific argument and use empirical evidence. I know this is not the usual way of a politico, but try to speak in a substantial scientific manner, rather than in shallow concise bites.

Then again if we were to assemble a list of the great minds of human history, we wouldn’t see many, more likely any, politicos or Captains of Industry on that list.

  20. We’re reluctant to censor comments about holders of political office.

But in light of some particularly disgraceful comments about a state Member of Parliament today, we’ll be blocking all comments about her unless they strictly relate to her public duties and political role.

We have already extended apologies to the person concerned and do so publicly here.

Anyone who persists with similar comments with ‘clever’ spelling variations or whatever will be permanently banned from making comments here at all.

We have also paid careful attention to the complaints about multiple re-postings of long articles – usually about Richard Dalla Riva – and re-posting of claims about him.

We gently ask that they be kept to a minimum too, not because it’s not good sport paying out on the Liberal Lefty but because the repetitive nature of it can be a little tiresome to other readers.

And it would also be worth keeping in mind that we are required to delete or at least alter comments that impersonate people so use a nickname for them if you’re wanting to put words in their mouth, please.

Other than all that, please continue to stoush freely while playing as nicely as possible.

  23. Dear Greenhouse Gas Believers,

    1. There is little doubt during the last 30 odd years the earth’s temperature has risen.

    2. If you looks back on the history of the Earth for the past few million years, you will find the temperatures have risen and fallen regularly, sometimes more than 20C in less than 20 years.

    3. The whole Greenhouse Gas debate is being run by inner city leftists who have replaced christian religion with a religion of global warming caused by humans.

    4. The Greenhouse Gas lobby group have been very good at capturing bureaucrats and decision makers to the point where anyone who offers different evidence in seen as somehow mentally unsound.

The temperature has risen since 1976 but has this been caused by carbon dioxide OR the earth’s natural warming and cooling cycles? No-one knows – not even the urban left.

  25. Global warming isn’t real. The picture book I was shown proved it and I am going to use my seat in parliament to make sure that the 95% of the world’s scientists who drink lattes with Melbourne’s inner city folk are held to account!

  27. Dr Michael Wooldridge has taken over 330 flights (thats one flight a week) at a cost to taxpayers of more than $144,661. It makes him the 5th most expensive ex-politician. But unlike the other expensive politicians, he is engaged solely in private business.

His sister has made no public omment about this. Disgraceful.
