IN THE FAITH: Danny Nalliah emerges as key player in Dandenong council

dannynalliah Colourful pastor Danny Nalliah has emerged as a "man of influence" in the Greater Dandenong council according to close supporters.

The head of the Assemblies of God affiliated Catch the Fire ministry has reportedly played an active role in the election of a significant number of councillors in Dandenong and aims to expand his family values agenda in Melbourne’s south-east.

Those known for praising Danny Nalliah in public settings include former mayor and Councillor Maria Sampey who gratefully accepted the crucial support of Nalliah and his many supporters at last year’s municipal election. A number of other councillors enjoy Nalliah’s support and according to a Nalliah ally "have not been afraid to show their allegiance despite potential criticism from atheists in the media."

"Nalliah isn’t like one of those slightly left-wing Uniting Church ministers who like to separate God from everything else in life. Dan believes faith should play a part in all aspects of our lives, in every level of government and in everything. If you believe God is everywhere, it makes sense at that level," one informed source explained to VEXNEWS.

The councillors backed by Nalliah and his supporters haven’t always pleased him, as he is a proud advocate of Israel, small government and family values.

Recently a number of Christian backed councillors and others voted in favour of a highly controversial 35 per cent pay rise, way in excess of the Consumer Price Index. It incurred the wrath of local media and angry ratepayers.

Local sources insist the pastor thought the increase was excessive and could bring the council into public disgrace.

Local councillors across Victoria have been voting consistently to increase their own pay. While in many cases their interstate colleagues are paid much more, some believe that the allowance and perks should be abolished completely alongside a diminution of political control of town planning and allowing smaller, more grassroots councils to be formed in accordance with the wishes of local communities.

One source close to Dandenong churches told VEXNEWS "We support people with good values, who we trust. That doesn’t mean we’ll always agree but we think the council and the community as a whole is much better off for our input. Dandenong needs an alternative to party politics on council. The Liberals aren’t strong in our area so we do what we can. And when the opportunity arises, we work with Labor too."

When asked whether he’d consider a tilt at public office via Family First or another vehicle, his backer explained "Danny is a man of influence in our local community, it doesn’t make him a politician though. He doesn’t need to be."

Nalliah played a crucial role in galvanising support for the election of Family First Senator and former Knox councillor Steve Fielding who will be recontesting his position at the next federal election and who will  be strongly relying on Nalliah again.
