IT’S COMPLICATED: LNP leader Campbell Newman still involved in Council affairs, insiders say

AmandacooperSoon-to-be Queensland Premier and LNP leader Campbell Newman has left behind an “it’s complicated” situation at Brisbane’s City Hall according to well-informed sources.

Newman’s hand-picked successor fill-in Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has been a career councillor, first elected in 1985 when he was 27. He’s not expected to serve out a full-term as Lord Mayor, if elected this year, due to his length of service.

The deputy mayor, well-regarded Liberal hot-shot Adrian Schrinner has been widely expected to succeed Quirk when the time comes.

But insiders, who kept a close eye on Campbell Newman and his close mate blonde bombshell councillor Amanda Cooper in their frequent and discreet car-park conversations when Newman was still in the mayoral robes, say that Newman favours Cooper, not Schrinner, as his eventual successor. Cooper was definitely Newman’s favourite, a situation that continues to the present day.

Anna Bligh is yet to call the election that will almost certainly elect Newman and give him an authority over internal LNP affairs that some think will see him reduce the role of controversial ‘faceless’ yet prominent party officials who’ve frequently been the target of criticism by the Courier-Mail and other media in Queensland.

Senior sources say that Newman will be in a position to “look after” Quirk and use his clout to put his lady in the robes over the top of Schrinner, seen by most Liberals as the smartest political mind in the City Hall. Some hope he’ll think about going federal to avoid the Newman-Cooper behind-closed-doors power-plays.

  7. Sorry Dusty, I’m afraid it’s going to be the Schrinmeister that takes the reins at City Hall when Lord Quirkiness says adious 12 months out from the 2016 election. If Seb likes he can have Lisa’s old desk and come in now and then and do some colour-in drawings. That’s if Nins says its OK.
