FURORE: Academic study says Aussie journos are a bunch of lefties, especially at the ABC

Some interesting results out of a survey conducted by academics of the political views of Australian journalists:

■ Editors are more in touch with Australian voters, reflecting views of the country far more than their staff;

■ 41% of ABC journalists say they vote Green, 32% Labor and 14% for the Coalition;

■ 46% of News Limited scribes are Labor voters, 26% Coalition and nearly 20% go Green;

■ Fairfax scribes are nearly 55% Labor with the Greens nearly 20% and the Coalition around the same; and

■ 51% of total say they are left-wingers, with only 12.9% considering themselves to be right-of-centre.

The findings were hotly disputed by ABC journalists immediately, with some questioning the methodology and sample size of the survey. Others pointed out that “The Conversation” could scarcely be accused of being unfavourably opposed to lefty journalists, employing a good number of them.

  2. This is obviously a conspiracy by the right-wing media proprietors – they have clearly issued instructions telling their staff to pretend to be trendy left-wing progressives in this survey, all as part of their evil reactionary agenda.

    Now will the ABC launch a witch hunt to find those who aren’t of the left? Something wrong with the employment process when 14% aren’t of the left.

  12. H the B, read the article 46% Labor 26% Coalition 20% Eco-Wackjob.
    After reading this it shows that the media is out of touch with the paying public.
    Now will they consider that this could be one of the reasons fewer of us buy the pap they are dishing up?

  13. I hate biased reporting. I hater 2GB for its vile right wing rhetoric and I hate the left wing bias sometimes reflected at the ABC. It should be a condition on broadcast licences that fair and balanced views and reporting are mandatory.

  19. Well bugger me with a fish fork, Adrian makes an interesting point.
    If only similar stats were available for the audience of these media outlets. The web/tv/print mix would make that a bit tricky but chances are that coalition voters have less time and stomach for propaganda from our highly esteemed ‘opinion leaders’ in the media.

  20. @Adrian Jackson, the difference is that we as customers and listeners don’t have to pay for the shit dished up by the commercial stations and papers. We don’t have that choice with the ABC.

  26. Scott – But the ABC and SBS do not dish up shit. My taxes help pay of other government services I don’t need like child care.

    Just look at the USA with that CNN and Fox news/talk psycho rubbish. The only decent news show coming out of the USA is PBS on SBS.

    If we did not have the ABC we would loose the politician voice on shows like 7.30, Lateline, Q&A.

    The commercial stations used to have real current affairs but not we have crap like Today Tonight and A Current Affair.

  29. The handsome Mr Mills came second in the Albert Park council elections but the ladies in our morning tea group tell me that the socialist Mrs Stevens apparently sent out a voting letter that was not correctly advised to the election manager.

    Now she has been taken to court – the scandal of it – and this week the nice judge said this election mischievousness will now have to be sent to the attorney generals staff for possible criminal prosecution.

    Now I need a bex and a goood lie down. How could this happen is nice Albert Park.

  32. It is interesting that the voting intentions of ABC journalists so closely match the voting intentions of the core Victorian public service – i.e. the admin and policy wonks that infest those tall buildings in the city supposedly giving “impartial” advice to Ministers.

  41. The two actresses in the new ABC TV series “Magazine Wars” are first rate but perhaps the ABC could have taken a leaf out of the “Absolutely Fabulous” episode were Patsy had some PR at a night club and next morning the London tabloid read “Trash Mag Slag”.

    I think that the ABC series should be called that as womyns mags are mostly trash mag and often edited by self promoting slags. Just look at the crappy glossy mags that drop out onto the footpath at weekends before they are placed into the litter bin unread.

    I was at State Council when it was debated but after he disagreed with some of Howard’s fascist right wing policies (boat people and the Iraq war) he resigned from the party.

    Having resigned I assume (Dennis Shanahan, The Australian, 24 May 13)that Fraser’s life membership would now be void

  52. A new series on Gough Whitlam was promoted on ABC News Radio a few days ago and it highlighted some of his achievement like introducing free hospital treatment(Medibank) and stopping National Service which is true.

    It also said Whitlam withdrew the troops from South Viet Nam. This is a myth, that the left like to trot out, but the facts are the Liberal McMahon government completed the withdrawal in early 1972 and Whitlam was not elected until late 1972.

  53. Hi Scott,

    I presume if the results were different you would keep the ABC.

    If you don’t like it don’t listen.

    I don’t like the baby bonus. But I have to pay. I don’t like negative gearing. But I have to pay. I don’t like paying for private schools but I have to pay. I don’t like family trusts but I have to pay. I don’t like tax free religions, but guess what- I have to pay for their freeloading. You don’t like the ABC and you have to pay. Tough titties.(Remember Ma Sheela?)

    And anyone who claims they represent the “paying public” I say show me all your financial records so an independent umpire can assess the validity of the amount of tax you pay. Of course it would be all above board.

    The hypocrites in the Coalition will have to keep the ABC or bye bye Coalition. The Nats listen to it.

    Posted by H the B | May 26, 2013, 18:25
  54. And another thing. If the ABC is to be truly representative I suppose their employment practices should take into account the political leanings of their staff after every election. Sacking people because of their political views. Nice policy that one.

    While we’re at it why constrain it to the ABC. I want to know how every public servant votes so we can ensure that the public service truly represents the “paying public’s views” Employment policy should consider the political view of every worker.

    That would get the Marxists out of Treasury.

    Posted by H the B | May 26, 2013, 18:35
  55. One more thing Scott,

    “H the B, read the article 46% Labor 26% Coalition 20% Eco-Wackjob.”

    No Scott, you read the article. It says 41% Greens not 20%, 32% Labor not 26% and you can work out the rest. Enuf said!
