TOWN HALL: Peacock out, Doyle to announce tomorrow

robertdoyleLM Respected former Victorian Liberal leader Robert Doyle is expected to announce his candidacy for the Lord Mayoralty tomorrow, possibly on Neil Mitchell’s ‘House of Pain’ radio show on 3AW.

Mitchell’s interview of Socialist Left candidate Will Fowles was an extraordinary episode, in our view, reflecting no credit on either of them. Fowles was hopeless but Mitchell outrageous.

Melbourne council activist Anthony van der Craats has obtained the audio of the interview and we present it here for your entertainment.

But Doyle’s candidacy is a truly interesting and for conservatives an enchanting prospect. As Liberal leader, Doyle could not have been less lucky. His first campaign cruelly undermined by the bungled enrolment of his Deputy, Dr Dean. Constant undermining from internal rivals. A Premier who seemed to wear a suit made of one part silk and four parts teflon.

But with Ann Peacock’s announcement in the Herald Sun that she won’t be running, the well credentialed former leader may have had his luck turn. Some speculate he even enjoys the very private backing of senior government ministers, including those who’ve appointed him to senior government board roles in recent times. He has also been able to obtain the support of the Kroger tendency in the party, who bring with them sharp minds like Jason Aldworth and other activists who love to dabble in the Town Hall.

If Doyle does throw his hat in the ring, he will present a formidable force. And without question give the Liberals their best chance of donning the possum coat of Town Hall triumph.

  1. I trust that I have the support of the Vexnews readership as I embark to take on Town Hall and screw over my nemesis, Fifi!

  2. Ann Peacock had to fall on her own sword.
    She is a classic ‘air head’ with nothing to contribute apart from being Andrew’s daughter and Michael’s wife (whom she snared from Helen with her athletic bedroom antics).
    She is only qualified to organise candlelight suppers at Crown.

  3. Sharp minds like Jason Aldworth?

    Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

    Doyle’s leadership was a disaster, coming from a grounding of massive destabilisation of Denis Napthine, to completely ruining the EastLink Toll issue, and other general disasters.

    While I am sure he couldn’t make too bad of a job of Lord Mayor as the State Government took away all his powers, I would rather have someone else thank you very much. And using “sharp minds” like Jason Aldworth is what makes this wish so.

  5. Neil Mitchell is nothing more than a coward of the highest degree who hides behinds his microphone and who’s main role is to be an apologist for the Liberal Party and constantly attack anything to do with Labor.

    If Mitchell was a real man he would come out from behind his highly paid microphone and run for public office. He thinks everything should be approved by him and apparently knows all, so naturally, he should be perfect to lead this Country or the State. But like all Liberals, good at talking, pathetic at showing leadership

  6. So the failed Liberal Leader Robert Doyle wants to be Lord Mayor. He could do better job than Ann Peacock, but will probaly do as Kroger wants just as she does.

  7. The corruption and sex scandals plus stupid decisions that continue to surround Local government particularly at Melbourne, Whitehorse, Brimbank and Casey are the reason I believe we should get rid of the 3rd tier of government, and just have Federal and State Governments.

    Federal and State governments are made accountable through TV, radio and print media.

    local government has little accountablity through local papers.

    Now mainly thanks to this website we see some of them exposed

  8. Fatty I should be your running mate.
    I am very well qualified for Local Government my skills are:
    1) Alcoholism
    2) Laziness
    3) Taking credit for others toil
    4) A lust for media attention and self-promotion
    5) I am a good talker, but I never get my hands dirty
    6) I love dining and living the life of a Lord
    We should have a glass at Walters and discuss?

  9. Fowles comes across as a fool. Not sure what your problem with Mitchell is. He can be a goose at times, but on this occasion he did very will. Showed Fowles up for the empty vessel that he is.

  13. Doyles’ leadership Record:

    1) Bad nuff-nuff policy on the run;
    2) Regular binges at virtually every eatery (drinkery) he could find;
    3) Grubby secret preselection deals for his stupid staff (which were exposed and fell to pieces);
    4) Silencing opinion and dissent with an arrogant wave of the fat little hand;
    5) Extraordinary dummy spits and expulsions of those who got him really mad;
    6) Disastrous election performance making Libs a minor rump in parliament.

    Come to think of it… on second thoughts, he does make a perfect Conservative candidate!

    No way he will win though…No way.

  14. It is my understanding that the forces of the liberal rebellion have a special plan for dark side Doyle and the conservatives.

    Clearly, it would be imprudent of Doyle to continue with his fitting sessions for the possum coat.

    So much fun!

  16. My dear Lord Fatty, the dearest of dear lord fatties,

    Oh what wonderful news this is my Lord. I am so pleased that you have decided to accept my wise counsel and indeed run for the position of Lord Fatty of Melbourne. My bill for such counsel will be in the mail shortly. This is a great day for Melbourne’s restaurants, and it is a great day for human rights. Emma must be so pleased. But tell me, who will be your running mate, who do you plan on making Deputy Vice Lord Fatty? Could it be Fatty Mando? Or is it I, Deputy Lord Queens Counsel McPerton MC? What a ticket that would be. A doyen of the human rights bar, deputy lording over the citizens of Melbourne. These are exciting times for Melbourne. These are exciting times for human rights. And these are exciting times for me, your truest and dearest friend.

    Yours in Brilliance,

  17. I will be making my announcement tomorrow. Now who would like to apply for a position in my staff?

  18. Mr Doyle used to put Liberal press releases on the blog of a Mr Locke. He even advertised for Liberal candidates for preselection on Mr Locke’s blog.

    After Mr Doyle ceased to be Liberal Leader, after his replacement by Red Ted, Mr Doyle ceased his placing of press releases on Mr Locke’s blog.

    Then in a great victory for freedom Mr Locke’s blog was closed down. Mr Doyle no longer needed to worry about press releases but Mr Baillieu never got the opportunity.

    Lazy journos uses to read press releases on Mr Locke’s blog that they otherwise couldn’t be bothered reading. Mr Locke sexed up Mr Doyle’s press releases, and that made the journos look at them.

    Good luck for Lord Mayor Mr Doyle.

  19. The 2002 campaign was a triumph for Human Rights – Roberty Doyle and his dashing, loyal deputy took a stand against the Law of the Jungle. History will one day thank us, er him, for taking this principled stand.

  20. Victor what a day I have had!
    That little blighter my Blackberry has been buzzing so much in my strides pocket, I became rather agitated and aroused and I needed to see Lindy my Relaxation Therapist rather urgently.
    Where to for luncheon tomorrow my dear dear friend?

  22. Lord Mayor Doyle fronting his first Council meeting with 2 of 9 votes – why bother really? And with the skill of Aldworth running preference deals like he did for Don Chipp’s Lord Mayoral run (not) Fatty will have more hurdles to jump than the grand national. If he prevails he’ll do so with the knowledge that its the weakest ass field of candidates ever. No one has come close to Ivan Deveson and MCC will be ridiculed like never before after this election.

  23. My dear Lord Fatty, the dearest of all dear lord fatties, I think Grossi Florentinos,upstairs, of course, would be a suitable place to celebrate the launch of your campaign for the Lord Mayorship of Melbourne. See you there at 12.30.

  26. My dear Lord Fatty, the dearest of dear lord fatties,

    It’s the funniest thing, but this morning, I arose from my slumber, not only in the matrimonial bed with the lovely Jane, but before midday. I suspect it must have been from all the excitement that my dear and great friend, His Royal Highness the Lord Fatty, will soon don the mayoral robes and that this raises the prospect of His Majesty the Great Deputy Lord Queens Counsel McPerton of Doncaster MC becoming your deputy and, heaven forbid should something happen to you, then I would be, well, lets not get ahead of ourselves, but isn’t it exciting, just to think of all the material I would then have for my 17 blogs, 13 websites, and 3 Facebook pages. Anyhow I arrived here at chambers and there being no matters at all requiring my attention for the day, I believe an early lunch may be in order, and it does not matter if Mr Guy Grossi is not yet in the kitchen, we can bide our time with some fine wine, martinis, Eastern European whisky, or even some Bundy and Home Brand Cola flavoured soda water that we smuggle in from BiLo. How does that sound? After all, we have a campaign to run my old friend.

    Yours in Brilliance,

  27. Mitchel is what many here have said, no love lost there.

    Will Fowles did not instill any confidence with his City Surveillance recovery. His campaign lacks substance and confidence. Fowles has more money and ego then most. He will end up being by default or design a feeder to McClowns campaign

    To date not one candidate running for Lord Mayor has yet addressed the real issues confronting Melbourne.

    The State Government failed to subject Melbourne to a municiple review as is the case for every local Council except Melbourne.

    The Minister for Local Government was quick to offer a cynical piece meal review on the question of Kensington, leaving North Carlton and other regions outside the city boundaries, and failed to address the bigger issues.

    Melbourne is way to small and parochial.

    The issue of Greater Melbourne has been shafted and hidden away on the shelves of government.

    The other issue is governance.

    The City Council administration is out of control bordering on being corrupt. Things have improved since Alison Lyons, Councils previous Governance Office left the City Council following a gaming review by the State Ombudsman over corruption.

    With the current financial crisis expected to hit big time inner city property prices the City finances will also take a battering. Melbourne uses a NAV rating system which they use to mislead the public when they claim that the annual rate has not increased. Property value increases over the term of John So had outstripped inflation and delivered the city a bonus windfall. A windfall that staff and Councillors were quick to dip into to help fund their extravagant luxury $2,000 a day holidays abroad.

    The direct election model has failed to deliver good governance

    With the addition of Kensington and Docklands the Council numbers should have been increased from 9 to 11. Better still would be to increase the size of the City to take in the four inner city State seats of Melbourne, Albert Park, Prahran and Richmond and increase the size of the Council to 21.

    Until the State Government and pretenders to the Keys of the Limo begin to address reform and governance the Clown Hall will continue to remain an expensive bankrupt laughing house.

    not withstanding the above I would have to agree that Robert Doyle is looking good and if he does nominate would be the front runner of a motley crew.

  28. If Doyle does run when will carry with him 2 to 3 Council positions. We will know the likely outcome of the Council election soon after nominations close and group preferences are determined. Most likely the Greens will have one. McClown, Will and co will elect or influence an additional two leaving one undecided.
