Catherine Ng’s campaign has been embroiled in scandal following Herald Sun revelations she will be prosecuted by the City of Melbourne for illegal election campaign posters.
As the Chair of the Council’s planning committee for the past seven years, she is responsible for the by-laws that govern where posters may be displayed.
The council can impose fines for each poster, which appear to have been put up by a professional poster distributor, paid for by Catherine Ng’s campaign.
According to the Herald Sun, the posters appear near a City of Melbourne sign that warns “bill posters will be prosecuted.
A council spokesperson told the Hun that such posters are illegal and are a “form of visual pollution.”
Ng bizarrely declared she did not know who put the posters up, despite paying someone to put them up, and promised yesterday to remove them.
VEXNEWS obtained a photograph of some of the posters displayed near Little Bourke and Russell Streets at 11AM, so clearly she’s not intended to honour that promise. Nothing new there, given she was elected seven years ago on a promise to scrap the Lord Mayor’s limousine. That never happened either.

Vexnews and Hun, how do we know who put them up? Jealousy perhaps that Ng just may win this thing?
Ng should be prosecuted with a breach of the local law if there is sufficient evidence to do so and the case proceed to trial forthwith.
IN today’s Herald-Sun Live blog on the City Council Lord Mayors Race Catherine Ng (ng/Wu) claimed in response to a question on review of the City Council representative model
Catherine replied
Yet when the question of a review was before the City Council earlier this year she and her factional colleagues voted it down every time. Was she polly speaking and lying to the electorate? She most certainly provided a false and misleading answer to the question asked.
Many questions where not published and many go unanswered.
She won’t obey her own by-laws. Fuck that.
Those companies that put up posters don’t do it for free. She paid them and broke the law.
If Ng is convicted of the poster irregularities, would she be forced out of council?
The Editor,
Your article above is just plain wrong. We have the owner’s permission to place these posters on this site.
There is nothing illegal in what my campaign team has done and I demand that you retract the above story.
Next time check your facts.
[EDITOR: We stand by our story and we're sure the Herald Sun stands by theirs. Ng's posters have been put up in a number of illegal locations. She should be prosecuted. Or at least condemned for not obeying the laws she imposes on others.]
MODERATOR: Disturbingly a number of virulently anti-Chinese and racist comments have been posted on the comments section of this site from the same IP address and Internet Service Provider as someone who had previously written pro-Catherine Ng comments.
Perhaps just a coincidence but whoever is writing them should be aware of Victoria’s racial vilification laws. We have retained copies of all offending comments and will send them on to the authorities.
If she can’t respect the law and ratepayers by attending meetings she should resign…
who is paying for Catherine Ng’s campaign.
If she works for a TAFE, she can’t be funding it herself.
Please investigate VexNews.
Seems someone wants to play the racial minority victim candidate in this campaign.
How gutless and cowardly.
Other than the illegal ones, is Ng really saying as chair of planning, that she got developers permission to display her dodgy posters?
She should disclose all the developers helping her campaign.
NG = NO GO
NG = NO GOOD
I have no problem with doing favours for the chair of Planning committee. She has scratched my back, I am happy to scratch hers.
Regardless of whether the owner’s permission is sought or granted, those posters are a breach of local by-laws.
The local law is very clear about this. Check it out for yourself.
She has one answer for the Herald Sun and another here.
What a liar.
Why isn’t my involvement in this illegality revealed yet?
Has former Councillor Nicholson been involved in a crime?
Planning department shenanigans? The Vic Ombudsman is investigating the infamous Brimbank council, its said one of the issues involves its planning department.
Has anyone got a view on the City of Greater Geelong elections, especially the highly contested wards of Kardinia, Buckley, Brownbill, Cowie and Corio? I would be interested in an analysis.
NG?
no biNGo
Has Antony Nicholson returned the council equipment and acquitted his $20,000 junket that he had the council pay for in the dying months of his term. I understand he missed his flight because he was drinking too much “free” booze provided at Council functions. It cost the City Coucnil over $4,000 to reschedule his flight. – Shame Shame Shame. Mack no doubt about it the likes of Susan Riley, Carl Jetter and Nicholson were all about the freebies, world travel and junkets. Qantas Frequent Flyer points paid for ther holidays when they lost office.
City Council should not be serving “free alcohol” to staff and City Councillors. They can get pissed on their own time and money. Imagine if you or I turn up to work drunk as a skunk. There was no surprise that Nicholson did not get re-elected.
Brimbank, Casey, City of Melbourne, Colac Otway, Darebin, Geelong!! Something is very wrong in the world of local government. Andrew surely this deserves some sort of expose by you Andrew!!
More Casey stories Andy!
Catherine Ng has also breached the Victorian Local Government Act by failing to publish the name and contact details of the person who has authorised electoral content on her web site.
