FIRESTORM: Baillieu and Singer’s international race row explodes in Macedonia and Melbourne’s press

redtedflamed The leader of the Victorian Opposition, Mr Ted Baillieu, and the flamboyant Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Gary Singer, have by their attendance at a controversial Greek rally created an international diplomatic incident, with the media in The Republic of Macedonia in the Balkans of Europe seizing on the issue.

VEXNEWS coverage of the debacle has itself attracted the attention of Macedonian television. An effort our sources should be well pleased with, matching our predecessor publication – The Other Cheek – which was featured on MSNBC for outing an fundamentalist Christian political candidate and his crimes of exhibitionism during the federal election.

Concerns are now that the neighbouring media in Greece will also jump on the controversy but in defence of Ted Baillieu and Gary Singer’s attendance at the Greek rally in Melbourne. Greek community insiders say they are hoping to downplay the issue, to avoid further embarrassment to their guests.

SITEL television station in The Republic of Macedonia ran with a report on the nightly news with the heading:

SKANDALOT NA PLOSHTADOT VO MELBOURNE

SCANDAL IN MELBOURNE CITY CENTRE

GRCITE SKANDIRAA MAKEDONIJA E GRCKA, A AVSTRALISKI FUNKTSIONERI – APLAUDIRAA

GREEKS CHANT ‘MACEDONIA IS GREECE’ AND AUSTRALIAN POLITICIANS APPLAUD

While the story is in Macedonian obviously, viewers will be able to see the video clip down the bottom of the page with a scene of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Ted Baillieu pictures and screengrabs from VEXNEWS.

The Herald Sun has also picked up the story which we reproduce below

  1. Yet another example of Red Ted’s woefulness. I wonder if Nick Kotsiras has his finger prints anywhere on this debacle?
Next thing Ted will be attending the a Greek Cypriat event! Wonder what old Alex D would think of that?

  8. Call that reality? Anybody with half a political brain knows what an explosive issue the ‘macedonia’ thing is! Why would Teddy go blithely blundering?

  9. Instead of creating good community relations with all people in Melbourne, the Liberals have decided to play favorites and inflame ethnic tensions in Melbourne.

A public apology should be made to the Macedonian community as the last thing we need is more nationalistic violence in Victoria. I’m sure Ted Baillieu and Gary Singer wouldn’t want to be responsible for anything that might eventuate.

  12. We, the real Macedonians should organise a protest throughout Australia and get Kevin Rudd to attend to the major rallies and see how the Greeks would react. We can play their game style too, by bribing all politicians and lying to them about our neibouring country.

  13. To be Macedonian means that you speak the Macedonian “language”,you follow the Macedonian “culture”, your “ethnicity” is Macedonian etc. If you are Greek, you spek the Greek language, your culture is Greek and your ETHNICITY is Greek. Two different ethnic groups. The only claim to Macedonia that the Greeks have(unfortunately) is a geographic are called Macedonia.Unfortunately Greece that DOES NOT make you Macedonian.(Wake up)!!!
