Former senior federal minister, High Commissioner in London, MBA, LLM and member of the ’superannuated glitterati’ (as David Feeney would put it) Richard Alston has emerged triumphant in last night’s election for honorary chair of the Kooyong Liberals at their annual general meeting.
In what is seen as a devastating blow to the Baillieu’s powerbase, Alston comfortably rolled the Ted Baillieu/Petro Georgiou incumbent chair Paula Davey by 245 votes to 181. Alston’s ticket of freedom won all the executive positions, wiping their shoes on the face of the local MP whose powerbase has crumbled in a devastating way.
Kooyong has traditionally been the centre of power for what was the Kennett faction now Baillieu faction. The Liberal leader’s seat of Hawthorn is in Kooyong.
This is a clear win for the Kroger-Costello faction and can be interpreted as a very encouraging sign for prospective federal candidate Josh Frydenberg who – if he plays his cards right – could attract the support of that group in his quest for the federal seat.
Frydenberg – though – is his own man demonstrating feline ways of independence, slinkiness and self-centredness over factionally preferred canine tendencies of loyalty, obedience and biting faction foes on command.
“A vote for Alston is not necessarily a vote for Frydenberg. It really depends who runs against him. Josh is a strong candidate, on paper. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some very ambitious people. Expect to see some big names fighting for this one,” one well-placed source explained last night to VEXNEWS.
Demonstrating just how devastating the blow was to the Baillieu/Petro camp, both of the beseiged gents reportedly stormed out after the meeting with scowls on their face that would have terrified children. Naturally, being a political party meeting, there was no one under sixty-five there except for prospective candidates, staffers and the dateless.
The Baillieu camp had tried to bully Alston out of the position, telling the left-wing press that it was ‘demeaning’ for someone as exalted as Alston to run for such a junior gig.
Hopefully Alston has gotten over his tendency to fall asleep at gatherings like this.
Let freedom reign again in this once great seat! Now if only Petro would follow his chairman’s lead and f*ck off!!!
Josh is a shoe-in. This contest will be unopposed.
stack, stack, stack.
The way Frydenburg acted last night was nothing short of disgraceful. Arrogant cunt didn’t win over anyone last night.
The meeting went 4 hours too long also.
Apparently this guy, http://www.AndrewRixon.com.au intends on standing in Josh’s way though. Never fear….
Honeys… this was inevitable.
Petro was an aberration in Conservative politics, adopting progressive small ‘l’ positions on occassion. The right have been planning this for ages.
Now that Kooyong has fallen to the feral conservative hordes – things will really get interesting!
Expect to see an interesting candidate mix in Kooyong at the next election honeys…
Man the lifeboats!!!
Frydenberg is a [anti-semitic ugliness deleted - IP has been retained and will be passed on to authorities - VEXNEWS]
anon @ 16.45, you are a disgrace.
[...] Vex News: DICK WINS: Krogerites smash Red Ted in his own backyard [...]
Were there not enough doctor’s wives in Kooyung to keep keep Alston out?
Andy, a couple of your best lines yet!
“Frydenberg – though – is his own man demonstrating feline ways of independence, slinkiness and self-centredness over factionally preferred canine tendencies of loyalty, obedience and biting faction foes on command.”
“Naturally, being a political party meeting, there was no one under sixty-five there except for prospective candidates, staffers and the dateless.”
those aren’t ‘lines’. they’re the unvarnished truth
All the stackers went home after the 1st vote, leaving no to stack the chairs after the meeting
Josh will be the first liberal to lose Kooyong, labor must be licking the lips already
Planes, Trains and Automobiles… They flew in from NewZealnd and drove all the way from Kilmore to support Alston to support Josh, or was it to support Josh to support Alston?
Either way they got what the wanted in the most divisive move of self before party
Shame Josh Shame
The result is significant on many levels. Not only is RT’s seat in Kooyong, but his key number’s man David Davis is also a Kooyong local and was thought to hold sway over local branches! Reports from the night also show just how whacky Team Ted (almost all of whom are connected to Petro in some way) are getting. Not content with telling Josh Spivberg to f-off Ted and the three stooges (Pink Panther, things that batter Troeth and Kapel) spent much of the night alleging that the Liberal Secretariat has stuffed the ballot boxes!!!
ohhh fair dinkum, you blokes are just TOO funny !
I just love this blog.
I have to agree, too, that line about over 65s staffers prospective candidates and the dateless is a balltearer.
