LET THEM EAT CAKE: An irreverent celebration of the leader of the state of the nation

happyjbday It’s April 21. Which makes it Happy Birthday day for Victorian Premier John Brumby.

Also born on that day was Victoria Beckham also known as Posh Spice and Our Sovereign Lady Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia and some other places.

Fortunately, the JB wasn’t born yesterday, so to speak, on April 20 which was the birthdate of a nasty German tyrant.

But he does share a birthday with Iggy Pop, the perpetually drug-dazed entertainer who made it big during the 1970s and who – for a time – played in a band called Iggy Pop and The Stooges. His best known song was “The Passenger,” a category of person the hard-working Premier is known not to like very much.

arnieJB Catherine the Great – also born on April 21 is perhaps the more pleasing point of comparison for the JB, a noted international statesman.

Wikipedia reports:

Catherine’s rule re-vitalised Russia, which grew ever stronger and became recognized as one of the great powers of Europe. Her successes in complex foreign policy and her sometimes brutal reprisals in the wake of rebellion… As many of the democratic principles frightened her more moderate and experienced advisers, she refrained from immediately putting them into execution…(Catherine also decided to) expand the universities in Russia to increase the number of scientists.

We suspect Brumby the Great would be quite pleased with a similar epitaph. Happy JBDay.

  3. Thank God Evan is still not around, he would have scoffed down half the cake, then ripped out a fart strong enough to blow the door off the Members Reading Room.

  5. wasn’t catherine the great the same one fooled by the ‘potemkin villages’ – fake buildings designed to make it look like all was well with the peasants – for the passing ruler who never got out of her carriage for a closer look? hmmm .. i’m just trying to think of an analogy for victoria in 2009 ….
