A water trust in Mildura illegally invested in subprime debt. The Water Minister Tim Holding – not known for embracing the error-prone – sacked them.
Oddly, Liberal leader Ted Baillieu has been critical of the decision:
“Tim Holding has put all his eggs in the basket of a problem of an investment basis,” Mr Baillieu said. “There are a variety of details as yet unexplained about that investment, and it would be useful if Tim Holding put all that information on the table too.”
The Minister’s position is clear enough:
“The former board have let down the community of Mildura by their poor decisions, including an unlawful investment, which forced the Government to act,” he said.
Holding fronted up to Mildura to meet with local water officials, councillors and farmers, five hundred angry farmers attended to express their pain by making Hitler salutes, throwing eggs and bearing banners declaring “”Hitler Holding Rapes Sunraysia.”
Water is a sensitive issue in the country, with the north-south pipeline that will take water from the state’s north to Melbourne “to flush in Melbourne’s toilet bowls” as the protesters emotively put it.
But violent protest and comparing elected officials with genocidal tyrants is unlikely to help their cause. The parents and grandparents of those formers fought and defeated the real Hitler and it’s a shame their descendants can’t tell the difference.
Timmy Holding looked very shaken on TV last night, thought he was gunna cry. He’s so not up to the job.
Anonymous you are a tool.
The reason behind the community anger yesterday is that FMIT is a very crooked little local authority that has colluded with local irrigators to steal water. Now that their stooges have been removed, they know that this cosy arrangement may be coming to an end.
Tim holding was very brave (or stupid) to front the crowd that included some pretty heavy characters that are watering cash crops a bit more interesting than table grapes and oranges. (He should sack he dim witted chief of staff for letting him go there in the first place.)
Water is a sensitive issue and it has nothing to do with this “being taken away bullshit” but all to do with the fact that once you deliver the water via pipes, you can put a meter on the pipe and the farmers can’t steal water any more. Never under estimate the lengths a person will go to to defend an immoral (and sometimes illegal) privilege that they have come to think of as a right.
