MAL’S LEGACY: Women front-runners ready to fight over Wannon

wannon The Liberal preselection carnival has another exciting side-show to offer observers with the announcement by former Speaker of the House of Representatives David Hawker that he’ll be retiring after a George Seitz style innings in the seat of Wannon.

He was first elected in 1983, an ancient time so long ago that Malcolm Fraser was still then considered a right-winger.

Naturally the mind of every hack/patriot turns to his successor after allowing oneself five seconds of nostalgia for Mr Hawker’s contribution to public life and we hear from Liberal sources the following parties are interested:

Georgie Crozier, a complicated Costello loyalist who is believed to have told friends she refused to read his book, has been active in the Higgins FEC and has served on the party’s Admin Committee. She would be expected to receive strong support from the Costello-Kroger faction.

Louise Staley is from the Baillieu camp and despite that appears to be a strongly credentialed candidate for a rural seat given her interest in agriculture and food policy.

Katrina Rainsford, a farmer, vet and former local councillor who lives in Wannon is also a chance. She is believed to be aligned to the Kroger group.

Simon Illingworth is also interested in running, is a factional outsider but the former Victoria Police officer has a high profile as an ethics campaigner and anti-corruption crusader.

■ Matt Makin is like Rainsford a vet and local councillor and is being boosted by the endorsement of one of the state MPs, John Vogels.

With another Western Victorian vet Denis Napthine waiting in the wings to take-over the state Liberal party leadership in time for the next state election, the Victorian Liberals could be hoping for a veterinarian led recovery.

Also rumoured to be interested is the VFF President Simon Ramsay who looks increasingly unlikely to win Corangamite against the highly regarded internet safety wiz Rod Nockles, a Kroger factional operative. Ramsay claims extensive connections in the local area that might support his claim to run. Detractors say his mismanagement of the VFF will count against him.

  2. Lou Lou is a friend of Richard Dalla Riva. If the Liberal party want to remain credible whilst arguing that the ALp is a slezey and grubby party, they will pre-select someone else.

  3. Lou Lou is also a former fiance of D-Squared. And D-Squared is a friend of RDR.

  4. I would also like to throw my sizeable hat into the ring. I have always wanted to represent a rural seat so I am able to maintain an uninterupted supply of tasty treats.

  5. Inga, I will second that you do have a ’sizeable’ ring.

  8. You naughty boys are trying to peek under my pencil skirt to get a look at my chantilly lace g-string again! Buy me a tasty treat and I will show you what you want to see. Remember boys there is a knot hole you can peek in, at the rear of my new taxpayer funded executive outhouse in Chelsea.

  12. I bet there are so many other contenders yet. Perhaps you should be looking beyond the bounds of the central Hamilton district, to the outer fringes of the electorate?

  13. Staley is in the Baillieu camp not because of any poncy ‘progressive’ credentials like timmitta.
She is part of the 104 clique circa 1990 with Shardey, Davis, Ted etc etc.
She is relatively bright, has been unfairly dudded on the merits previously and has unfortunately been to the same school of diplomacy as the member for indi.
Team Ted will whip themselves into a self righteous frenzy on her half.

  14. Your an idiot.

You honestly think the ‘factions’ will whip into a frenzy to get their candidate up. Honestly…is there some kind of cynical fanaticism against country liberal candidates?

  15. Don’t underestimate Sarah Henderson for Corangamite!

  16. Sarah Henderson is not the rising star ascending in Corangamite.

There is someone that few have mentioned who is doing the rounds on the ground and bringing people on board.

  17. new hope for Corangamite, you are right, the new hope for Corangamite and for all of Victoria is the Great Terry Mulder.
