BLIND FREDDY CAN SEE: PM says Victorian and WA CFMEU is a "problem"

ruddcfmeu Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made it clear the WA and Victorian branches of the CFMEU Construction division are out of control. He was on the ABC and said:

On the substance of it, you’d have to be Blind Freddy not to conclude that there haven’t been historical problems most particularly in the Victorian and Western Australian divisions of the Construction Division of the CFMEU.

While some in the Labor Right in Victoria have teamed up with the CFMEU, the Prime Minister and his Deputy is not impressed with them at all.

There should be one law for all, the unions say, and few dispute that. It’s about time the officials of that union started obeying the one law we all have.

The government has committed to scrapping the law-enforcement agency Australian Building & Construction Commission in 2010. We see no reason why they should do that until they take the next essential step, distancing themselves from this lawless outfit now and forever by:

■ Disaffiliating the Victorian division of the CFMEU from the ALP; and

■ De-registering that union and splitting up its coverage to unions with a more responsible track record including the CEPU and AWU.

Many Labor people would read that and be startled by the idea. In the ALP, anything is possible but questioning what a trade union does, even if violent, even if corrupt, is usually deemed as not quite right. Union bosses tend not to question each other’s conduct or usually dabble in each other’s business.

But if Rudd stays as PM and if the CFMEU Construction division in Victoria keeps pulling violent stunts at workplaces like they did at the West Gate picket recently where they brought in Geelong bikies and convicted criminal thugs to intimidate and terrorise the employer into caving in to their demands then both of those radical steps will become inevitable.

You read it here first.

  1. Fascinating how everyone is staying well away from this one!
While union busting has become linked in the public mind to the campaign against the MUA by Patricks and the former government, it should be remember that Labor governments have been responsible for two of the most vicious union busting exercises.
Chifely in the coal miners strike, but much more recently the Hawke Government’s absolute demolition, using resources only a government can muster,of the pilots.
While many would argue this was easier because superficially they weren’t comrades it is an almost forgotten example of what Labor governments are capable of.
Nor should it be forgotten that many of the crazier freaks in the West Aussie division of the CFEMU are refugees from the breaking of the BLF in Victoria.

  6. If Saint Kevin had his way the only unionist in Oz would be Sharan Burrow…..and the only reason for that is she is a look-a-like to Rudd’s missus.

  7. To whom is St Kevin responsible? How about the electorate? How about the mum’s, dad’s and grandparents who weren’t going to stand by and let their grandaughter sign an AWA but equally didn’t vote for a bunch of strutting, irresponsible, violent unionists who sincerely believe that they are above the law.

  8. Why does Rudd keep slagging this poor blind dude named Freddy? What’s he got against blind people?

  9. Hang about Annonski – don’t twist the words. “beholden” – being under obligation for a favour or gift. “responsible” – politically answerable.Very different propositions.

  10. I may be missing something but I just don’t get how many union activists seem to believe that its legitimate for an elected government to be ‘politically responsible’ to unions regardless of whether this is remotely compatible with the platform or madate a government is elected with.
