Former ABC TV presenter Sarah Henderson has been preselected by the Liberal party just moments ago as their candidate in the marginal seat of Corangamite.
The Baillieu faction backed candidate, who is the daughter of the highly regarded late Geelong MP Ann Henderson, secured the win after a preselection contest involving interviews, one-on-one meetings and speeches that started at 10am and continued until about 5.30pm at the Peppers Resort in Torquay that seldom sees events as spicy. The Liberals are a tough breed.
Sarah Henderson is something of an outsider to internal Liberal politics but is expected to be loyal to the Baillieu faction, as her mother was a rusted-on Kennett supporter back in the day.
There were are a number of candidates but ultimately it was a stoush between the Kroger backed Rod Nockles who had perhaps unwisely challenge Stewart McArthur at preselection last time.
Baillieu faction local headkicker Bev McArthur – Stewart’s power spouse – took great delight in encouraging Sarah to run and in helping deliver a strong result in her candidate.
Hell hath no fury like a Bev scorned.
The Baillieu brigade will be looking on more in hope than in confidence in Kooyong that their traditional federal bastion of Kooyong won’t fall to the heavily self-promoting Josh Frydenberg, a merchant banker who has reportedly had someone quietly pushing his case with Canberra based scribes, while hoping that it wasn’t a breach of party’s strict Cone of Silence rules that prohibit candidates speaking to the media.
UPDATE: Local Liberals tell VEXNEWS they’ll be sleeping through tomorrow after their long marathon. And despite opinion polls saying they’ll go substantially backwards at the next federal elections, they are hopeful of doing very well in Corgangamite due to what they say is the huge gap between the Labor MP Darren Cheeseman’s work ethic during the campaign and the pace he’s set as an MP. “We can take him,” one optimistic campaigner said, “especially with a candidate as strong as Sarah Henderson. She’ll have strong financial support too from many people who reckon we could better than Cheeseman.”
UPDATE: Someone has sent in a pic of two newsreaders who worked together for Channel 10 Melbourne in 1988. One was Alistair Paterson, who was the Liberal MLA for South Barwon from 1992 to 2002 and has recently served as the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle’s chief of staff. The other is Sarah Henderson, whose mum was the Liberal MLA for Geelong from 1992 to 1999 and who is now the party’s candidate for the federal seat of Corangamite.

UPDATE: Liberal Patriots from the Land of the Cheeseman insist that Sarah Henderson wasn’t Bev McArthur’s first choice. That’s true but she certainly voted for her over Nockles, in the kind of factional thrill-kill we love. Bev is a shrewd player who has been with the Krogerites and the Baillieu-istas over the years. She was a huge supporter of Helen Kroger back when she ruled the roost but eventually concluded they were nouveau riche thrusters and posers.
One observer describes Bev as a highly effective but permanent oppositionist, she ends up joining the minority. She is the power behind the throne at Meningoort, the McArthur family seat from which all Liberal power in the Colac region is derived. We think Stewart must like dominant women, as he should.
McArthur supported the quality local Simon Price initially, while Sydney sider Sarah Henderson was supported by big business elements in Geelong and she won on the day to some extent because she was such a strong presenter but also because of the crucial support on the last vote from Bev, a formidable woman of power who squared-up with Nockles and humiliated him with the brutality that only old money can wield with such grace.
Sarah Henderson was the Kroger backed candidate.
A good victory for the 300 year old man
that’s audacious spin from the baillieu camp. Bev’s heavily backed candidate was Simon Price who didn’t even make it to the final round.
wrong wrong wrong … Bev was backing Henderson, but even more so, she was backing the anyone but Simon PRice candidate. She would have voted for Knockles before Price
How on earth did this thing take 7 hours? Was RDR in charge of organisation or something?
if that is the case, anonski, how come Simon price was at the top of bev’s ticket for country male state assembly a few weeks ago?
You must have been reading upside down. Kakouris was on top of her ticket
Why is everyone always questioning my integrity?
A victory for patriots. Well done, Sarah.
More proof the ABC is just a training ground for right wing aspiring politicians!
Who cares .. the Cheeseman will romp it in
Bev wasn’t backing Henderson, she attacked her with aggressive questions during the open and closed sessions. Funny way to support someone???
Half of the McArthur family asked Simon Price dorothy dixers. He was their preferred candidate.
Cheeseman cant even read word for word speeches prepared by his staff let alone have any connection with his constituency! Isnt Joe Taylor the defacto member anyway?
Bev and Stewie can’t stand Simon. They they view him as a traitor.
I was at the convention. Bev didn’t ask a single question. Get your facts right
Pity Rod Knockles didn’t get preselected! He was the best candidate. He’s very nice in person.
It’s all over, so how about just moving on?
It was a long a painful enough soapie…do you really need to drag it on any further?
If there are any sore losers who feel the need to neurotically go over it, and seek some sort of revenge or justice for themselves, then please, do us all a big favour and divert your energy toward psych evaluation and stop with the sulking phonecalls.
Great news that Sarah won. She will be a worthy heir to the seat of Corangamite.
any idea what voters Henderson will take off Cheeseman?
Sarah, saw you at state council. You looked hot in those boots and the blouse/skirt combo. I’m a bit of a skirt man myself. Give me a call if you ever need a lift home
RDR, you are what is wrong with Victoria.
Get rid of Morrison. Replace him with Towke.
I guess that means she will get the male vote.
LOL.
You are all idiots. You’re completely missing the point of the discussion board. TO DISCUSS THE ARTICLE!
Henderson was NOT the Krogerite candidate. Nockles was the Krogerite candidate.
Anonski, can she be competitive.
Against the Cheeseman? Absolutely!
This is Corangamite!
There are no Krogerite and Bailieu candidates!
Dark Horse, you are soooo naive!!!
A good result for the Liberal party. The best candidate got up and credit to the delegates for pre-selecting her and not another political hack. The first post here is correct, the Krogerites were backing Henderson after Nockles went out of his way to work against their man Ross Fox in the senate pre-selection…and because she was the best candidate running. Whatever spin the Baillieu camp wish to put on the result, Sarah Henderson effectively had cross factional support.
The result is also a positive endorsement of the party reforms. Under the old system Nockles and Price would have made sure all their supporters were at the branch meetings to elect delegates to the pre-selection and Sarah as a talented outsider wouldn’t have got a look in. She would have been knocked out 1st or 2nd round.
The candidates broke down as follows
Kroger – Nockles (Long time Krogerite, but obviously pissed too many people off along the way)
Baillieu – Henderson (Judith Troeth was introducing her around State Council, and was hated by Bev McArthur – a true sign of being a real Baillieuite)
McArthur – Price (Was never going to win)
The so called “long tome Krogerite” Nockles was not supported by the Krogerites against McCarhtur in the last pre-selection. Was briefly supported by the Krogerites for Admin but as mentioned above, was not supported by them in this pre-selection after working against their man in the Senate. They also saw Henderson as a new, fresh and talented candidate who warranted their support. There were some active people in the Kroger grouping doing lot of work for Sarah.
Your correct about Baillieu and McArthur.
The Libs can preselect whoever they like, it won’t make much difference. Corangamite consists of three parts – the western rural areas, which are pretty solidly Liberal, but not growing; the Surf Coast and Ballarine towns, which are trending rapidly to the ALP and are growing fast; and the Geelong suburbs, which are now firmly Labor because of WorkChoices (great move, that, Libs). This is a seat which is steadily firming for Labor. Add to that Rudd’s popularity, Turnbull’s unpopularity (esp in Victoria), the massive stimulus spending which Le Fromage will of course take credit for, and the fact that by election day the economy will be in recovery mode, and the Libs don’t have a chance. Le Fromage will get a 5% swing towards him. Vive le Fromage!
everything worked like a treat for young Joshy, good thing the Age didn’t do any research, otherwise they would have uncovered what we are afraid will leak out
Regardless of who is each faction’s candidate. This is a big victory for Party reform. The best candidate won. And no one is capable of controlling a preselection. Sounds bad for Joshy in Kooyong.N
It is funny to watch The Krogerites drop Nockles as fast as they can
I should have run for Corangamite.
How quickly will Joshy be dropped by the Krogerites after he loses this weekend?
Bev and Inga despise the Baillieu clan. Unfortunately for them, they are true warrior patriot haters, and because the Korgerites slighted them, they are prepared to jump into bed with the Teddista pack to avenge those betrayals. In Corangamite, Bev has a strong following, but it is not enough to get a candidate over the line. she originally supported Price, an original krogerite/mcarthurite who stayed loyal to both. when he was knocked out, she was left with two choices – the Teddista candidate (henderson) or the Krogerite candidate (knockles). the choice for her was obvious, and so she went for the lesser of two evils.
Inconsequential. Viva the “Cheese”. He will reign another 15 years.
The old saying that if you say something enough people will start to believe it is happening here by the Baillieu camp. The Krogerites were actively supporting Henderson in this contest. The support for Nockles ended a long time before this pre-selection concluded but not long after the Senate pre-selection concluded. The Baillieu camp have had so few wins over the years that they will take wins that aren’t even theirs. It’s very sad.
I’m running for Higgins whether Peter likes it or not
She is much older than my usual conquests but I would ‘drive her’ to her abode.
so what happened to simon ramsay
Ramsay was knocked out in round 2 of 4 rounds.

the genesis of “the filth” began with references to just one slop copper
He’s just announced his retirement
http://www.thepunch.com.au/articles/john-roskam-is-this-the-next-member-for-higgins/
JA for Higgins!
JA for Higgins!
Its time for a Kroger to hold Higgins. That Kroger is Simon the Younger!
John Roskam is the best man for Higgins. No decent Liberal would disagree with that. Go John!!!
Can anyone please let me know what I have to do to get preselected for our marevelous Liberal party in the South East. I have worked very on Council pushing the Liberal line as directed by my mentor Inga Peulich and I am extremely well liked with the City of Casey. Surely all my hardwork is enough to allow me to have a shot at the seat of Narre Warren South against Labors Judith Graley ?
Please help me, I know I deserve a shot at this level
I’m hoping that if the sloane ranger /does/ cross the line in Corangamite, she’s learnt a bit more respect for the democracat than when, as a Geelong College prefect at a Head of the River that co-incided with an election (late 70s or very early 80s), she ripped the ALP sticker off my chest (and I was an old boy at that stage, not a student).
Shut up.
I am not Naive. I certianly don’t have any factional loyalty if I ever stand…
Labor had the benefit of hundreds of people in orange for months in the lead up to the last election which won’t happen this time. After a few early blunders Cheeseman does the job of a marginal seat mp which is to not fuck up in public and let the leader shine through. The Liberal and Labor candidates will probably keep it together until the election. Labor sits on a margin of 1500 votes which the new Liberal candidate just took away in the private school belt in Highton and on the Bellarine and in the Colac heartland. Labor and Liberal will be both starting off scratch with the local campaign and Rudd vs Turnbull to decide the contest. Anyone disagree?
Sarah Henderson is backed by the big end of town and the Costello faction. She is NOT aligned with the McArthur’s at all, who were backing Simon Price beyond all belief. However, Sarah wasn’t the star performer on the day. The next Liberal Member for Corangamite was introduced to the audience today, a candidate whose speech blew the delegates away. Sometimes speaking last has benefits.
However, from all in Corangamite – bye, bye Rodney!
Why would the McArthurs back Price given that he slags off Bev at every opportunity?
Makes sense, every second Geelong College girl in the 80s was called Sarah (the other half were either “Bec” or “Fi”). She was the one at Gables drinkng UDLs underage.
The key to Corangamite is the Waurn Ponds burbs – what used to be a cow paddock back in MacArthurs hey day. Something tells me Henderson hasn’t spent too many Saturday’s pricing outdoor settings at the Waurn Ponds Bunnings…Cheeseman at least looks like someone who might; thusly he shall win.
Cheeseman won’t win.
He’s still an outsider from Ballarat. He is sitting on too small a margin, and there will most likely be a swing against him.
Give us a big cheesy grin before you go Darren.
The ‘Cheese’ will cruise in. Maybe even a massive 3% margin.
Wrong again.
Cheeseman is a goner.
Congratulations to Sarah Henderson. She will do a better job than some or her rivals would have done.
Libs need to: stop bickering, sort out their factions, find a few leaders (or at least one for State and one for Fed), write some solid policy, and start telling the people about it, and do it NOW – not just before an election.
Price never had a serious look-in, and never will. It was clear during the convention that someone other than a party hack would be needed. That ruled him out.
Given the field, that meant it was a choice between Nockles and Henderson, and Henderson took the tough questions well.
Don’t think so, Reflection. Hardie hasn’t got near enough substance. Price falls in the same category. Neither of them resonate, but for very different reasons.
McArthur certainly DID back Price! That was most self-evident from the BBQ at Meningoort hosted by Stewie in support of Price a few weeks back, where a few preselectors were given the chance to talk with him. Thankfully, it took more than that to get him up. Looks like people have better judgment than that.
Insider 101, Price came third. Not a bad effort really. Perhaps he should go for the state seat of South Barwon, considering he is its electorate chair.
I don’t know who you are 101, but i’ll find you out. See you at the meetings.
It is interesting, Interested, that you speak about substance. You must have been there? A State Council blow-in, perhaps?
Hardie’s speech and presentation touched on the very important issues facing Corangamite. It was more substantive than any other on the day. Unlike others who traded on their past and why people will love them, I understand that Hardie traded on what he would do for the electorate, contrasting himself against Cheeseman.
McArthur’s BBQ was the week before the preselection; was the usual crowd who were largely not going to vote for Price anyway but liked Stewie. Poor Beverley probably did more harm than good with that one. Perhaps ‘Scorned Beverley’ was indeed on the menu?
After calling for generational-change in the Liberal Party, it’s a bit surprising that a candidate well over middle-age has been selected as the ‘younger’ face of Corangamite? There won’t be a female member for Corangamite for a while…
Dis-interested, you must be the one and only Hardie fan.
You obviously weren’t invited to the McArthur’s BBQ and sound as if you are a scorned candidate in that race yourself.
Hardie didn’t win because he is all about hype, no real world experience and exaggerates his credentials and knowledge to everyone. Insincerity defines him.
Perhaps people in their mid 20s should be running the country huh? Using their youthful lack of experience and zealous hubris as training wheels– grow up.
Sarah Henderson will win and you should go and get some maturity and perspective.
I completely support Uninterested.
Henderson has the support of the electorate, both the electorate comittee and the wider electorate members, and the swing required to win is not mcuh at all.
I still think Rod Knockles would have been a better candidate…but thats politics i guess.
I heard that Ronno was secretly backing Hardie — mates they are.
None of you have said exactly why Henderson will win. Where do they pull the votes and why? I think some detail is needed.
Duuuuh, I think it is rather obvious why Henderson will win, as much as the sore losers don’t want to admit it.
She aint so old such that she is senile — far from it. And isn’t so young as to be a hotheaded unthinking cowboy fool.
She’s intelligent, attractive, has diverse life experience, is a known face for at least some of the demographic by virtue of her time on the tube. Great CV and projects a mature, caring balanced and smart persona…
Dark Horse, Price did come third, but I don’t really think any of the candidates below him proved themselves to be worthy contenders over the course of the preselection process, and I don’t really think Price did either.
That’s why I think it came down to a choice between Nockles and Henderson. It was only ever a two-horse race. And given the way Henderson responded to some
aggressive questioning, that swayed the day.
Dis-interested, yep, I was there. And no, not a State Council blow-in. Try again.
I also completely agree with the comments of Uninterested and Dark Horse. They have hit the nail on the head. The biggest supporter Hardie had was Hardie. Arrogance, over-confidence, inexperience and hubris will not win elections, particularly in a seat like Corangamite. Voters expect more than a big-talking 20-something in a suit with no real-world knowledge and a potential predisposition to alienate.
The lack of real-world experience is what distinguished Henderson and Nockles from the rest of the field, particularly Hardie and Price. While Ramsay and King may have had experience, they lack delivery and presence. Ramsay was most disappointing.
Either Henderson or Nockles were good choices. While Nockles would have no doubt been good, Henderson is more than capable.
Hardie is definitely a beastie boy–beat boy beat boy, hit that perfect beat boy. Hardie pants is his secret nic. I heard that rumour about him and Ronno also.
Price deserved a go. He’s a top genuine loyal upfront bloke. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who worked with him at PH who would bag him or say that he is 2-faced. More than can be said of at least one or two of the other candidates.
Not fair his views were being exaggerated and misrepresented by at least one other candidate.
Who is this Price guy? Sounds like a real tosser.
Yeh anonksi, like you have never heard of Price. Save the false ignorance for another site.
He sounds like a tosser and you don’t know him right? How transparent is your swipe?
Upset you aren’t part of the inner crowd or any crowd for that matter??
Hanson Young is a disgusting goth skank.
It is bad enough that she is in the Senate. Let alone her direct issue.
Haha, is that you Simon? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Hardie and Ramsay were much better candidates than Price. Only a moron would try and argue to the contrary.
Anon, you are soooo waaaay off the mark. hahahahaha. But, you do sound like a loser candidate…hehehehehehe.
What? You think I sound like Price? What an insult! Ha ha ha ha ha.
Anonski: you must be 20 something with only the brain between your thighs operating, though not hardly used. Get some perspective. You’re obviously mates with one of the men you mention,or perhaps one of them yourself. Dinwitt.
Anon, you’re comments reflect that you are just a purile immature loser. You definitely aren’t Price.
WTF a dinwitt?
Who is this Price guy? Google tells me he works for Vogels and formerly for the Great Man, Stewie.
Sounds like a useless hack to me. The Liberal Party is not the ALP. There are too many EOs in parliament already.
BTW, “you’re” is the contraction of “you are”. I think you meant to use the word “your”.
anon, get a life. This discussion is the most boring of the lot on vexnews.
Stop knocking young blokes that have a fair go at something that they believe in and are committed to.
Good on Hardie for having an honest go. I think we should be encouraging people to have a go. Feedback is one thing, but silly unhelpful comments are another.
I huffed and I puffed and I couldnt get along with anyone.
I told everyone I have been a loyal servant of the party, why didnt they vote for me?
And I am proving to be such a good looser ringing all my friends(xx>?>)telling them I wont back them – and they say – you and whose army?
Why doesnt anyone like me?
I am gods gift to poltics they should all just pray for my deliverence
Nockles was the best candidate on the day but factional complications did him no favours. His speech and responses to questions placed him well above the rest and he stayed in the race all day. Henderson was second but King did better than his result would suggest. Ramsay and Price underperformed and Hardie was a little wanker.
