Former Deakin MP and factionally unenthusiastic Krogerite Phil Barresi has comfortably won Liberal party preselection to have another crack at the marginal eastern suburbs federal seat.
With 183 delegates present out in Nunawading, the doors were locked at 7.15pm with a nervous and expectant buzz among the assembled oldies.
Barresi performed comfortably and professionally.
His opponent, infamous anti-Semite Ken Aldred was less comfortable in addressing the crowd. He squirmed noticeably when asked about whether he’d sue VEXNEWS for accurately describing his political ties with the anti-Semite extremist group, the Larouchites.
He said he wouldn’t, saying his lawyer had recommended against it. We bet he did.
It is possibly the first time the VEXNEWS brand and almost certainly this author’s name has been mentioned in a Liberal party preselection body. Hopefully it will not be the last. We like to get around. If Aldred’s VEXNEWS name-dropping interlocutor wishes to make themselves known to the editor, we’ll be sending a God-fearing Gloria Jean’s voucher out east to you.
Deanne Rhyll was the other nominee but it was the former MP Barresi who stole the show and won the preselection. The result was announced around 9.30pm, making it a relatively fast preselection meet compared with the marathon efforts in Corangamite and expected in Kooyong and Higgins. The result wasn’t close, Barresi won on the first round, meaning he polled more than 50%+1 of the vote initially.
Ominously, there were twenty-five Liberal members willing to support Ken Aldred, despite his public record of inventing vicious falsehoods against prominent members of the Jewish community.
He’ll be hoping that Mike Symon won’t have the same level of financial backing as he had from his former union, the ETU and that he’ll be able to compete on a level playing field.
Although decided in the first round, Mad Ken got 27 out of 183 votes.
Phil is such a lightweight though, he is a living breathing Bird Brain.
The preselection tonight was a testament to the new reforms. Kemp and the Futures Committee should feel so proud. It has injected such vest, drive and imagination into the preselection process. I can think of no better candidate for a marginal seat than the guy who lost it last time around … Go Reforms!!
I wasn’t intending to turn up to vote as I really didn’t think my vote was needed. I only decided to turn up to make sure I had the plesure of voting against Ken and his personal beliefs, but more importantly to make sure one of Inga Peulich’s lacky’s didn’t get in to merely improve her powerbase in Victoria. This women is an evil, nasty, vindictive person and the Liberal party does not need such people as her in the party. I know their is a growing number of members working behind the scene to ensure her future is a very short one.
Forget the Liberals. I’m more interested in what is going on with the ALP and Hakki Suleyman
Why is everyone always questioning my integrity?
I think Phil will win the seat. Although not a huge swing is needed, I think Phil has the local connections to win the electorate. Other than Deaking & Corangamite, I don’t see any other seats changing hands. Perhaps Ballarat or Bendigo?
If Phil had the local connections to win the electorate, why did he lose the electorate?
Phil Baressi was supported by former Whitehorse Mayor Peter Allan last time. Not a good sign. Will Peter Allan support him next time? It must be stressed that the Whitehorse Peter Allan is not Jacinta Allan’s father of the same name, nor is he a relative of Lyle Allan, despite claims to the contrary on this blog.
Excellent, hopefully this means he’ll cop a second spanking from Mighty Mike.
Legacy of 07- Its Simple. The unions & ALP outspent the Liberals 3:1 at the 07 election. Its hard to retain a marginal seat when you have that much money against you.
haveing said that though, Phil is a known figure in the electorate, and if , and I say IF there is a swing against the Government, Phil is very likely to win his seat back.
Does anyone know the final numbers for this one?
I understand that rambling Ken only polled 6 votes NOT 25!
Dee did not perform that well.
Congrats to Phil on winning, but sadly, Mad Ken was by far the best candidate in terms of speeches. This came to me as a bit of a surprise.
Dark Horse, although Labor/Unions outspent the Libs, it’s not all about marketing.
your message has to be right. and in 07 the electorate was ready to dump WorkChoices Howard and Barressi et al.
no matter how much the Libs spend next time, if they can’t reinvent themselves under Turnbull, they won’t win, particularly in the aspirational ‘burbs like Deakin.
I am very pleased that Mad Ken lost.
By the way, Rat Dog Riva is what is wrong in Victoria.
If that is Sandra;s view, then I believe Rat Dog Riva is what is right in Victoria.
My VPs … no need to be like that, neither of you will replace me. So please get along.
Another Workchoices warrior returns to the field. To quote Mick Symond “sometimes you just get lucky”.
Phil Barresi – the Krogerite?? Haha! yeah right … how many losses (first Corangamite, now Deakin) do the krogerites want to cover up

Who am I?
I came 3rd in a preselection against Marie Luckins.
I set up a failed business called International Careers Pty Ltd in a tax haven.
The peak of my political career was as an adviser for the Bronwyn for PM campaign.
My only experience as a campaign manager before becoming State Director was campaign director and strategist for the losing Monash Province campaign in 2002.
My closest political associate is Santo Santoro.
I lost a state election.
I deliberately sabotaged the Prahran campaign, removing central funding for factional reasons.
I was part of the losing team for the last Federal election.
I gave the IT contract for 104 to a company Dan Feldman’s was a director of, without going to tender. Dan Feldman subsequently had to leave his law firm.
I leased part of 104 Exhibition Street – a direct legacy of Robert Menzies – to Tolarno Galleries, who displayed Bill Henson’s child porn in the Liberal Party’s own building.
I corruptly breached the Electoral Act, using the threat of pulling the party polling contract to get two people fired.
I asked staff to blog against the State Leader, then when it came out, I knifed them as publically as I could to try and rat out of it.
When the blog affair came out, I denied even knowing about the blog – lying to Ted Baillieu, Tony Nutt, David Kemp, the media and the party. In actuality, I had been bragging about the blog I had tacitly authorised for months – including in December to Don Nardella MP, who has since put the facts on the record in parliament. http://www.theage.com.au/national/liberal-chief-under-pressure-over-blog-20080528-2j3u.html
I undertook a secret deal with DPA Document Printing Australia Pty Ltd to re-employ Chandler for the Liberal Party, in a cruel hoax on the Party and the Jewish community.
I left 104 Exhibition Street in a burning wreck, having lost both the State and Federal Campaign managers in a fortnight of the worst media coverage in the Party’s history.
I tarnished the reputation of the Higgins 200 Club by associating it with donations from the aged care industry extracted by Santo Santoro.
I have been unemployed for over a year.
I tell people I am a “accountant/ corporate accountant” despite no longer holding proper professional registrations to do such work.
I am not very popular amongst the branch members in Higgins.
Sounds like J-Rat.
Dee was the Krogerite.
I see your point Eastern patriot, But politics is alot about marketing infact. The new ETS…for example was marketed extremely poorely. The GST was marketed in a very clever way, hence the then Howard Government didn’t lose (yes they ALMOST did). Marketing is more powerful than you think, the message is important I agree, but marketing can overcome those inadequacies…such as the greens or the NSW ALP.
If barresi wasn’t the Kroger candidate, how come he had a reference from costello and got a dorothy dixer from ronaldson during the preselection?
The ALP pre-selection action is being a bit neglected here, with the focus more on the Tories. Can we have more coverage of this rather than concentrating on dreary Deakin or Inga’s lost property?
Not too much to report on that front yet. Madden is running is Essendon, Natalie Sykes in Keilor, Bob Smith moving to Madden’s upper house vacancy. Nathan Murphy from the CEPU will take up Theo’s vacancy, assuming there’ll be one.
The National Executive will imminently appoint the western suburbs spots that have been referred to them, the incumbents will be backed with the Seitz vacancy filled by Sykes, a great result for her.
A fight for young and old in Ivanhoe between Langdon and Carbines, as previously reported.
A fight between young Enver Erdogan and old drama queen Erik Locke in Brunswick.
That’s the current state of play.
Lots of talk that there’ll be a preselection deal between the Left, Labor Unity’s Shortcons and the Feeney led Ambition Faction as early as today.
When there’s something new to report on those matters, we’ll let you know.
Thank you for that succinct wrap up.
It is unbelievable I am sending back my ALP Membership Card and Newhman can shock it up. Madden given a safe seat and he has leadership ambitions even though the idiot can’t manage 2 EO staff and Hakki Suleyman is an elected National Conference delegate. off ALP you stink and I can’t wait until you lose office.
In terms of confusing Peter Allan, I should also point out it is not the same Peter Allan who used to sing I-Go-To-Rio and who is now coincidently dead.
As for Phil, nice to see he’s still got the fire. I think I voted for Mike last time but only as as a vote against Howard.
Will be a very different story next time round, as Rudd has been a disappointment. Mike is ok as a member but is just another Laborite towing the party line and doesn’t do much.
How many political parties has Peter Allan been a member of, from memory he has at the very least been a member of the ALP, Liberal Party, Democrats and then an “independent” (not sure about his status as a Green). Seriously what were you thinking Whitehorse voters?
Costello and Barresi are friends. Thats why he gave him a reference. But they arent in teh same faction. Baresi was a die hard marginal back bencher for Howard who thwarted Cozzie’s ambitions. As much as bareis now tries to rewrite history by explaining that Deakin was all Howards fault. Well, actually its Phils fault, beause he was part fo teh clique that kept howard in place. baresi will lose this seat. the voters had already turned on him at 2007. what reason would they have to come back to him.
Phil Barresi may have won preselection for Deakin, but RDR is still what is wrong with Victoria.
Baressi supporter last time and member of numerous political parties with the very Scottish surname Peter Allan (like the English Smith, the Vietnamese Nguyen or the Maltese Borg) is not to be confused with the singer Peter Allen, who has the Irish variety of the surname.
There used to be a department store named Peter Allan in Edinburgh. No truth in the rumour that the owner was related to the former Whitehorse Mayor of the same name. Don’t know about Jacinta’s father or even of dear old Lyle, as barrister Colin Lovitt once called him.
The three biggest department stores in Edinburgh used to be J & R Allan, Peter Allan and Patrick Thomson. All have now closed, regrettably.
Baressi will not win Deakin. the unions have their claws on it & will treat him in the exactly the same way next time around as they did last time.
A new image is desperately needed!!
Why do people call him Mad Ken? Crazy Ken has a much better ring to it.
I heard he only received 6 votes too. The six senile old ladies in the back row who spent most of the evening knitting.
Ken Crazy is even better. If he’d won: Go f’Ken Crazy!!!
