LARGE AND IN CHARGE: John Brumby issues preselection decree in the interests of democratic centralism

To modify an old Confucian saying, those who complain about branchstacking, Comrade Eric Dearricott, Royce Millar, Andrew Giles and such ought to be very be careful about getting what they wish for.

They’ve got no elections at all, with their complaints used as the catalyst for the understandable decision of Premier Brumby to ask the ALP National Executive to intervene to avoid what could have been a splendid preselection carnival involving thousands of voters and dozens of candidates in each seat.

Subject: A message from the Premier

Friends,

I am writing to you to inform you that on Thursday I wrote to the National Executive of the Australian Labor Party requesting that they terminate the current process for Victorian Upper House pre-selections and re-open nominations, with a ballot to be conducted by the Executive.

National Executive has endorsed this request.

My decision to seek Federal intervention was not taken lightly. I have always been of the view that pre-selections should afford Party members a local vote.

This has been the case for the pre-selections for the three by-elections held since I became Premier.

However the issues facing the ALP highlighted in recent internal and external debate pose significant challenges for the ALP in Victoria.

While it is important to acknowledge that some of the issues raised have been by our political opponents (and should be viewed accordingly), there are matters that require our attention.

I have publicly called on the Party to address these matters and I note and support the steps being taken to date.

While these issues are being resolved it is clear that it would be particularly difficult to conduct Upper House pre-selections with a local ballot component. This is in no small part because of the scale and complexity of the proposed ballots as well as the timelines involved.

I am committed to working with the organisational wing of the Party to address these issues and will at all times be guided by the best interests of Victorians, the Government and the Party.

The pre-selections for Legislative Assembly and House of Representatives seats will take place with local ballots in the practice long established.

I am confident that these pre-selection arrangements will enable the ALP to take to the people of Victoria the best possible candidates for the November 2010 Victorian State Election.

Yours sincerely,

HON JOHN BRUMBY MP

Leader of the State Parliamentary Labor Party

  4. Brumby is weak as piss perhaps he is just another hostage of the factional warlords. One thing for sure is the powers that be better look after the CFMEU this time or they will pull themselves and their money out of the ALP. Tip: Newnham will get a spot for sure and even Kosmos or was that suit at conference just a stunt.

  14. Democracy ALP style. It’s like a turd in a swimming pool. It’s horrifying but no one wants to be the first to grab it.

  15. At least that means that ALP Banch meetings and Members wil not have to suffer the psychological torture of the endless visits and calls from sitting Members looking for support.
One of my clients from Western Province has attended so many meetings in the past month that her children have forgotten her face. Actually both of them.

  19. Priceless. While the Liberals have done a thorough clean up, rejecting multiple membership payments & opening preselections to all members who live in an electorate, Labor has done nothing about stacks & is narrowing the preselection process. Which party is meant to be the democratic one again?

  20. So those who benefit from Branchstacking Telmo, Marlene, Khalil, Pakula, Bill & Brendan &co are edorsed without a local vote, now Brumby should hope that there is no evidance anywhere of wrongdoing by these fools !!

  23. so local candidates who live in the local area are bypassed and outsiders are accomadated cause of the Brimbank issue, Marlene who benefited from Gorge’s members a couple who were deceased but got a vote anyway are re-endorsed, Smith being flown in to one of the safest regions in the state thanks to Brumby, this must be the biggest political flurffy!!!

  27. In the mean time, arch moron and no account ALP staff member Mark the numbat Kennedy is branch stacking, paying for dud members and creating numbers so he can steal Niddrie away from Hulls. He has even signed them up in the car park outside of ALP head office. This absolute dill, who impressed everyone when he was on Moonee valley Council with his inability to think straight, answer questions or to deliver innovative policies, thinks of himself as the next big thing. Well we have news for this crook – the ombudsman will be hearing about you, sleeze ball

  30. I nearly cracked up in raging laughter. Mark Kennedy never had any real chance of getting pre selection even though he has branch stacked as much as any other crook in that area. If not more and better. But Kennedy has big ambitions for himself and to hell with the fact that if he ever got in that community would endure the biggest of all duds as their representative.
