NOMINATIONS: NUW’s Antony Thow is Senate-bound
VEXNEWS understands that NUW State Secretary Antony Thow has nominated for the preselection for the Senate.
The first two places on the ticket have gone already to Senator Carr and Conroy, preselected centrally by the National Executive.
He is expected to be replaced by their organiser in the Victorian office Adam Portelli as State Secretary although that is not certain and NUW sources say Thow won’t leave unless and until he is actually elected to the Senate, which is likely but not certain against Dr Richard Di Natale, the bro-in-law of powerful Greens party numbers-man and tram-user Greg Barber MLC.

The NUW Vic Branch must have a secret Keating Fetish. A clutch of caucusing Victorian Networkers must be reminiscent of Keathing’s Manchu Court. Current and stars in the making have the trademark pale swarthiness, all day five o’clock shadow,a love of finery with pseudo intellectual flourishes such as glasses one suspects have plain glass rather than lenses.
Next thing there will be Mahler piped through the foyer of the new southern cross building to accompany an empire clock shop and a Melbourne branch of machiavelli’s eatery!

If Thow wants to go to the Senate he should fuck off now. How dare he think he can treat an NUW State Secretary position like an each-way bet. Does this unprincipaled dweeb think that a NUW State Secretary position can be treated as a second prize?
Sorry, Pakula made his decision and fucked off and Thow should do the same. If Donnelly had an ounce of principal he would not allow the State Secretary position to be treated this way.
So if Thow fails to get elected to the Senate, he wants to remain as Victorian State Secretary ef the NUW. Where does this bloke get off? He must have a hide like a rhino. The NUW must have totally lost the plot to allow one man to treat one of the senior positions within the union in such a way.
Thow told the NUW National Council meeting in January this year that he had no intention of going into politics. Incompetant and a liar as well.

Thow racks up a million in debt for his union…and loses about 9,000 members….supports a ballot to take away union members rights, the move gets knocked back by the industrial registrar…
…and now he gets #3 on the ALP Senate ticket….AND should he not get voted in he wants he gets to keep his old job at the NUW….
…and they wonder why people are so cynical.
when thow goes chas can put victoria into his failed general branch,at least he would have a couple of members to pay his debt. or will one of the vic goons wake up and say.chas enough is enough.

When Thow goes maybe Charlie will bring that superstar Danni Shannahan down to Victoria and impose her on the Vic’s as their secretary, the same as he tried to do in QLD.

Anon Annonski we object to the comparisons between the great man and would-be Senator Thow and his band of not so merry but very ambitious men.
Admittedly they do all look alike (is it a polo top wearing cult?), but the swarthiness and dodginess is more Nixonesque (that’s Richard Millhouse not Christine) than reminiscent of the great man. Frankly none of them are fit to lick PJK’s bootstraps (not sure if this idea appeals or not).
Anyone who knows Thowy should not be surprised. This was always on his agenda and good luck to him. He isn’t comfortable at the NUW under Donnelly and it’s apparent among the NUW Victorian branch officers. Donnelly still wants to run the state branch as well as their national branch and Thow has been open with his dislike of Donnelly and his plans for the union.
Thow is smart enough to do a good job in the Senate if he wins. He wont be held back by the union either.
The big question is who wil replace him at the NUW. Donnelly wants Adam Portelli but no one else does.
Tim Kennedy, Paul Richardson or Antonia Parkes would be much better candidates to run the NUW in Victoria. Portelli has not got the stripes yet to run a union of that size, although it would be “run” by Donnelly in the long term.
Donnelly seems to be intent on imposing his own puppies in the leadership roles. His rule change gambit has bit a speed hump but he still wants Danni Shanahan in Queensland, and now Portelli in Victoria.
The NUW is nowhere a national union as long as Donnelly is there because of the fractured relationship he has with the very capable Derick Belan in NSW.
It is a wonder Donnelly didn’t go for the 3rd spot on the ticket himself to get himself out of the dung heap he is in!
By the way, out of all the NUW old-timers, Paul Richardson is about the clueiest among them so he deserves a go. Portelli is just too young.
I think it will be cool to have one more gay in the Senate…Bob Brown…Penny Wong…now Antony Thow. Cool.

Dear clipposaurus, I think Mongy Hock is Hocking. His claim to fame is he used to be an assistant kitchen hand in the army. Not sure who Hairy Arms is but it is possibly Kennedy.

I dont know if an ex-assistant kitchen hand has ever run a union, but by the looks of how the current NUW leadership behaves, it might be a step in the right direction.
