Whereas Carbines has eased out into $3.50.

I lost a preselection battle to Heidi Victoria, despite making promises to both factions.

I could only get a job as a teacher, after my father threatened to withdraw his funding to that institution.

I was known during my term on Administrative Committee for being lazy and incompetent.

SENIOR state Labor MP Craig Langdon has been dumped from Parliament in favour of Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s chief of staff, Anthony Carbines, in a move party powerbrokers hope will inject new life into the 10-year-old Government.

Mr Langdon, the “whip” in the Labor caucus and member for Ivanhoe for the past 13 years, was defeated at an emotional meeting at ALP headquarters last night by a cross-factional coalition of preselectors.

Mr Langdon has been a popular figure in the parliamentary party and the decision to axe him could cause instability and dissension in the Labor caucus in the lead-up to next year’s election.

Supporters of Mr Langdon, 52, condemned the decision last night, accusing members of Premier John Brumby’s Right faction of “betraying one of their own”.

But Ms Pike said the preselection of Mr Carbines, 36, was an “exciting” move by the party that would inject new blood into the caucus.

“Anthony has worked for me for nine years and I have great confidence in his capacity to be a valuable member of Parliament and a good contributor to public life in Victoria,” she told The Age.

But another Labor insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Mr Carbines was a “party hack” and “bit player” who had lost respect by moving against his patron, Mr Langdon.

Mr Carbines, who becomes the endorsed ALP candidate for Ivanhoe at the election, declined to comment on his victory over Mr Langdon.

Mr Langdon said: “I do not comment on internal party elections, but I would like to say it has been a great privilege to be the member for Ivanhoe, to save the Austin Hospital and to achieve many positive things for the local schools, police and the community health centre.”

Last night’s meeting of Labor’s public office selection committee also endorsed Yarra councillor Jane Garrett, a former adviser to ex-premier Steve Bracks, as the party’s candidate for the seat of Brunswick.
