ASTON: Alan Tudge slammed for being an “unprincipled opportunist”

alantudgeportraitAston Liberal preselection front-runner Alan Tudge has been accused by party insiders of being an “unprincipled opportunist” who say that his passion for politics is more about self-promotion than a passion for Liberal ideas.

Tudge, a former Liberal staffer, management consultant and now Aboriginal welfare worker has been slammed by internal foes who say he has little personal connection to the Aston area and little commitment to conservative politics.

Diligent researchers have dug up Tudge’s public statements while serving as the President of the notorious Melbourne University Student Union where he loudly criticised the then Liberal Opposition Leader Jeff Kennett in the middle of an election campaignover the party policy to make membership of student organisations voluntary.

Tudge expressed his strong personal opposition to voluntary student unionism and to the Liberals in the midst of the 1992 state election:

“As far as we know the Liberal Party is committed to the introduction of what they call ‘Voluntary Student Unionism’ which means in effect the introduction of legislation that will prevent universities and other tertiary institutions collecting amenities and services fees from students and distributing some of that money, that is students (sic) money, to the student organisations that represent the interests and welfare of students. However no mention at all was made of this ins the recently released Coalition Higher Education Policy. Yet if this happens, the financial stability of student organisations will be destroyed and they will find it virtually impossible to continue their work.”

In that analysis, he fails to explain that under a voluntary model, student unions would be able to charge a fee for their services, just not be able to coerce students into paying it.

The student president continued on, seeming to express pleasure in conservative electoral defeats in the early 1980s.

“It was only electoral defeats in the early 1980s that prevented Liberal Governments from introducing VSU in Victoria and Western Australia and the lack of an upper house majority that more recently prevented the Greiner Government of New South Wales from attempting the same.”

He seemed to also be expressing reservations about the election of a Liberal government in Victoria:

“If the Liberals win in Victoria they are more than likely to have a majority in both houses. This makes the prospect of legislation to introduce VSU a matter of real concern to most students.”

Those with very long memories also reminded VEXNEWS that Alan Tudge had a history of reneging on deals with Liberals and Labor moderates to elect candidates associated with the extreme left within the Australian National Union of Students organisation. Tudge helped elect a particularly menacing drug-taking student radical from the “Socialist Alternative” tendency, Ben Ross to high office one year he held votes.

True to form, years later, while serving as a ministerial staffer to former Labor party member Brendan Nelson who became a Liberal Cabinet Minister, Tudge finally joined the Liberal party after a year or so. Party insiders question his commitment and loyalty and say Tudge will be hammered on this point during the forthcoming preselection interviews in Aston.

  1. Tudge will never win Aston preselection.

  2. Tudge only joined the Liberal Party when he was 28 because the ALP rejected his advances.

  3. I was involved in Liberal Student politics in the early 1990s at Melb Uni and Tudge never identified himself as a Liberal voter or supporter.

  4. Anon … you must be a Tudge apologist! He joined when he was 34, and only after he had been a ministerial adviser for 18 months. His non-membership was raising many eyebrows, and his boss at the time (Nelson) told him that, as he could attest to from his own experience, you can join a party and then switch if the electoral mode changes. Tudge told his mates at the time that even though he was anxious about joining a party, the advice from Nelson gave him some solace because he could always switch parties and cite Nelson as a precedent.

  5. So another trendy lefty wants to become an MP representing ordinary outer suburban battlers. Groan! The liberal party does not need another greg hunt type in its ranks who cant even decide what party he wants to join until 10 days before his preselection form goes in

  7. hahaha … Alan is running for Aston? I haven’t spoken to him for a while, but after he failed to get any traction for Goldstein, he told me that he had realised he needed to pick his targets more carefully, and that he would ‘fcuking roll” Kevin Andrews. What happened, did he get lost along the way?

  8. his argument is that VSU will result in ‘user-pay toilets’ … what a scoundrel. a dishonest politician, another Brendan Nelson, an out of touch sympathiser with our opponents – not good enough!

  9. Liberals that join the Party late in life, that are strongly opposed to VSU and that don’t care two hoots about Conservative values are exactly the type of candidate that I would support.

    Just ask Ryan Smith.

  13. Have no idea who Alan Tudge is and if he is nominated will vote for anyone but him – simply because he isn’t a local. We are a very weird breed out here – we hate outsiders with a venomous passion. Especially party hacks whose only claim to fame is that they once made coffee for some obscure backbencher or spent a summer stuffing envelopes at 104 Exhibition St.

Local Liberals reckon that the 3 most likely to put their hands up are Manny Chickyello but the powers that be in Aston hate his guts so he’s a no go. Sue McMullett doesn’t live in the area and is on the nose as a serial pre-selection nominee and failure and that leaves Chris Pearces’ namessake Derwin (Global Warming Denier) Pearce.

He’s got a high profile (not always flattering but still has a hight recognition factor) and he actually lives in the Electoral

Rumours are rife that with Chris (piano man) Pearce going, the ALP might actually take the time to contest Aston this time. Will see it when I believe it.

As for the ‘Left and Right’ of the party. Who gives a toss if they aren’t a local?

Oh and the VSU – WTF is that? Does it meet in Aston?

  20. Tudge lives in Bulleen. Only recently moved there thinking Andrews was going to call it quits. Now all of a sudden he is an Aston local. Aston voters value locals, but they value honesty even more. Tudge should stop pretending to be something he is not. He is treating Aston preselectors like idiots.

  34. Who am I?

I came 3rd in a preselection against Marie Luckins.

I set up a failed business called International Careers Pty Ltd in a tax haven.

The peak of my political career was as an adviser for the Bronwyn for PM campaign.

My only experience as a campaign manager before becoming State Director was campaign director and strategist for the losing Monash Province campaign in 2002.

My closest political associate is Santo Santoro.

    I lost a state election.

I deliberately sabotaged the Prahran campaign, removing central funding for factional reasons.

I was part of the losing team for the last Federal election.

I gave the IT contract for 104 to a company that Dan Feldman is a director of, without going to tender. Dan Feldman subsequently had to leave his law firm.

I leased part of 104 Exhibition Street – a direct legacy of Robert Menzies – to Tolarno Galleries, who displayed Bill Henson’s child porn in the Liberal Party’s own building.

I corruptly breached the Electoral Act, using the threat of pulling the party polling contract to get two people fired.

I asked staff to blog against the State Leader, then when it came out, I knifed them as publicly as I could to try and rat out of it.

When the blog affair came out, I denied even knowing about the blog – lying to Ted Baillieu, Tony Nutt, David Kemp, the media and the party. In actuality, I had been bragging about the blog I had tacitly authorised for months – including in December to Don Nardella MP, who has since put the facts on the record in parliament. http://www.theage.com.au/national/liberal-chief-under-pressure-over-blog-20080528-2j3u.html

I undertook a secret deal with DPA Document Printing Australia Pty Ltd to re-employ Chandler for the Liberal Party, in a cruel hoax on the Party and the Jewish community.

I left 104 Exhibition Street in a burning wreck, having lost both the State and Federal Campaign managers in a fortnight of the worst media coverage in the Party’s history.

I tarnished the reputation of the Higgins 200 Club by associating it with donations from the aged care industry extracted by Santo Santoro.

Both my first and second wives are better at politics than me.

I have been unemployed for over a year.

My only appointment most days is a long boozy lunch at the Athenaeum Club.

I tell people I am an “accountant/ corporate accountant” despite no longer holding proper professional registrations to do such work.

I was dis-endorsed by Peter Costello, once he realised that the allegations of improper conduct made against me were, in fact, accurate.

I am not, nor will I ever be, very popular amongst the branch members in Higgins.

I am thinking about heading back to Queensland, where Santo might be able to get me a seat.

  38. Tudge has been caught out playing both sides. He has told many Krogerites that he is one of them, and that he has the support of key members of the faction including Scott Ryan and Michael O’Bryan from their Melbourne Uni days. But then he has told leading Jeffistas that he is not a conserative and is determined to bring a new Harvard MBA effectiveness to detsroyng the has-beens who currently run the party – he often references Ronno, Smith, H Kroger, Sandra Mercer More, McGauran and Fifield, depending on the audience. He has told these people that Mary Wooldridge, Greg Hunt and Martin Dixon are his key backers.

    So what’s the real deal?

  39. My dear Lord Fatty, the dearest of dear Lord Fatties.

I was sitting on my deck chair under the Golden Gate Bridge, with my current servant Sebastian keeping me cool by fanning my face and feeding me peeled grapes, when Jane came over to tell me about the logo farce, and to question whether your Lordship is capable of making a single decision that is either right or popular. Neither one of us could think of one, although I did remark that it takes considerable skill to take a free kick and turn it into an own goal, and that you are a master of that particular skill. But I do think she was being a bit unfair, and I believe teh people of Melbourne, whom I am the true representative of on the international stage, don;t know class when they see it, and misunderstand what a deep and complex soul you are, and that this logo is right for them, because it is imposed on them by way of edict in the form of Lord Fatty’s business contract with a US firm (why was I not consulted about this?), and that withotu such a logo, we would have jungle law in the city of Melbourne (just ask Dr Dean). And then I came up with a brilliant idea. Surely the Lord Mayor himself needs his own logo! Yes indeed, a logo for Melbourne, but also a logo for His Royal Highness the Lord Mayor Excellent of Melbourne, Doyle of Malvern-on-Page-Campbell, AC – and I can see that logo now … a silohette of your head, with a big set of testicles protruding out of your bulbus forehead … yes, makes perfect sense to me, but more importantly, makes perfect sense to Melbourne!

  41. Don’t worry about Sheezel .. lets focus on Tudge. Why should a marginal seat liek Aston be entrusted to someone who has no connection to Aston, has never lived in Aston, wasn’t even a Liberal until his mid 30s, was a staunch opponent of core liberal beliefs up until that point, lies to people in the party about who he supports and who supports him, and goes around telling people that only people who went to Harvard belong in Parliament. A real man of the people.

  44. My dear Commissioner McPerton, the dearest of all dear McPertons.

Whilst always pleased to read your witty correspondence, on this occasion I feel that I must protest.

I strongly support your marvelous idea that the Lord Mayor Excellent of Melbourne – ME!!! – should have a logo.

In particular, you suggested the logo should be, “a silohette of your head, with a big set of testicles protruding out of your bulbus (sic) forehead”.

My objection is to your description of my head as “bulbous”. I am mindful that I am rotund, but my head is perfectly proportioned to the rest of my body.

Nevertheless, your profound comments reminded of what Jeffrey once said to me, “Doyle, you know any d!ckhead can win Malvern for the Liberal Party – even you”.

  46. Dear The Umpire.

You know what? On September 18 this year Dumby and his cohorts celebrate 10 years of control over Victorians and 10 years of petty infighting within the Liberal Party for ‘control’ of the State Party.

So, if after 10 years in the Victorian State electoral and relevancy wilderness, you are still raising the spectre of Krogerites and Jeffistas it’s no wonder that Dumby is still Premier and will continue to be after 27 November 2010.

The State Libs have 15 months to get their shit together, bury hatchets – and not in each other backs – get some decent policies, and work TOGETHER (sorry if it sounds weird), to get rid of the overtaxing and Toll double-crossing Dumby who – in case you had forgotten – IS your natural enemy. Not some unknown Liberal Party hack who thinks he as a shot at Aston.

    Reality check anyone?

    Cheers

  47. No one who opposes VSU deserves to be preselected. This is a core value for true believers in the party. Even in the broad church, there still needs to be a belief in something core and freedom of association is about as core a value as you can get. With the new value-free management gurus ruining the party being preselected in safe seats, the Liberal Party may well become as irrelevant a social movement as discarded reality shows like Big Brother.

Posted by Giuseppe De Simone | July 24, 2009, 21:29
  48. Giuseppe darling, if you think that the majority in voters in Aston give a toss about the VSU then sweetie, you are seriously deluded.

Luvvey, do you honestly believe that on election day there will be a conga line of Aston voters approaching some bored, roped-in volunteer handing out Liberal how-to-vote cards and fervently asking them ‘I was retrenched 12 months ago and can’t get a job, my house is about to be repossesed, the Labor government has destroyed my super and slashed my family allowances and unemployment benefits, because of Krudds economic policies my kids are going hungry, but, before I vote, my biggest concern is – what is the Aston Liberal candidates view on the VSU?’

Ducky the voters don’t give a tinkers cuss if it’s a ‘core value’ of the Blue bloods.

Sweets, your views are so out of touch with what voters are really interested in, or concerned about, explains unmistakably why, well, you aren’t in government pretty much anywhere are you?

As for your concern about the Libs ‘becoming irrelevant’, I wouldn’t worry because the Libs already are.

Again – check the electoral map.

    Posted by Tudge Watcher | July 25, 2009, 11:43
  53. Perez – you denigrate what you do not understand in much the same way as Pauline Hanson did – what is a core value is something that defines a party – it is not necessarily the issue the party puts first in its manifesto for election but it does infuse the whole policy platform. Freedom of association is a core value, VSU is a manifestation of that value just like the rules against “no ticket no start” thuggery on building sites are a manifestation of that vale. Voters care about their security first, personal safety or that of their family and loved ones. If they have real fears about this – whether it be criminal bashings, communist hordes, Osama or fascist government, they will do what they can – fight or flight – to avoid the risk; secondly, they care about their immediate well-being in terms of health and wealth; thirdly they care about the future – education, culture (and the sustainability of that culture into the future), moral values including religion. The first two allow for wonderful fear, uncertainty and doubt campaigns. The future is a long way away – that’s why green politics will always be marginal, albeit important to those that care about it first, mainly the better off and the better educated. If I had to punt, there’d be more Christian evangelists than tree huggers in marginal seats (marginal in the sense of being between the ALP and Liberals, not between the greens and the ALP in inner metro or the populist independents and Nationals in the bush). Party hacks are not suitable for marginal seats – that’s why the parties spend inordinate amounts of energy attracting celebrity candidates (like sportspeople or movie stars) for these seats or go with the parent with 2.2 children, a small business in the local community, some church attendance (but not too much bible bashing) and a host of voluntary positions involving helping children, domestic pets or pensioners. It used to be the Liberal Party that was better at this sort of profiling but it is now very much the role of State Secretaries or Directors in each party to slap down the ambitious hacks for the recently joined photogenic possible. This is the ultimate fusion of political party and reality television.

You allegience are exposed – calling the possible future State Premier ‘Tedweight’ shows that you allegience is to the ALP and not the Liberal party because you are so obsessed with internatl party politics that you cannot imagine the concept of the Liberal left working with the Liberal right – to gain power.

Is there no-one in the Libs who realise that at the last election you should have romped home in FTG and you scrapped in – why – because you are so still obsessed with Kennett v Kroger V Ballieu v who cares that you have totally lost the plot.

No-one in Aston cares who gets nomintated. At the next election the local Libs will vote for whoever is put forward. The Laborites won’t and the Swingers will be convinced by any national/State campaign.

One of the more erudite locals, familiar with the Party beyond Aston (possibly C Pearce himself), gave a quick rundown on the Tudge entity.

People roared with laughter when they heard he joined the Party in his mid-30s, only after having worked for Brendan Nelson for 18 months.

People also roared with laughter when the learned that he had worked for Brendan Nelson.

The locals then spoke as one: “Tudgy, No way”.

    Posted by observant | July 27, 2009, 18:13
  100. Despite attempts to destabilise, the Libral upper house pre-selection will be relatively uneventful. Libs have ALP on the back foot and as candidates enter the field, the margins will narrow. Currently, the Libs are likely to pick up 6-7 seats. The remainind 7 will depend on the team, the quality of candidates and the policies. Kemp’s reform work will be exhonorated and he will go down in history as its saviour when Libs win State Election in 2010.

  179. A LIBERAL MP has apologised after allegedly calling a Labor opponent a ‘‘f—ing bitch’’ during a late-night parliamentary debate.

Heidi Victoria, the Liberal member for Bayswater, conceded she was ‘‘out of line’’, saying she regretted using ‘‘unparliamentary language’’ towards Labor MP Danielle Green.

Ms Green said she had interjected during a speech by the Liberal MP on the Victoria College of Arts with the comment ‘‘who wrote that for you?’’ at about 10.30pm on Tuesday, to which Ms Victoria responded: ‘You f—ing bitch.’’

‘‘The member for Bayswater has just used words which started with ‘f’ in referring to me,’’ Hansard records Ms Green stating.

‘‘And I ask her to withdraw, because it is very unparliamentary and I take personal offence that any member in this chamber would be so undisciplined as to use words like that.’’

After initially contesting the request to withdraw the comment, the Liberal MP then withdrew and did not deny using the language when contacted by The Age yesterday.

Ms Green, who is parliamentary secretary for emergency services, said she was appalled by Ms Victoria’s comments, saying the community deserved better from parliamentarians.

‘‘We are leaders and with leaders comes responsibility,’’ she said.

Ms Green also called on Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu to discipline Ms Victoria over her outburst.

In 2003, Liberal shadow minister Victor Perton was ordered to apologise to State Parliament for abusing independent MP Russell Savage.

Witnesses to Mr Perton’s outburst alleged he called the MP a ‘‘f—ing disgrace’’ and challenged him to a fight after the independent MP made a jibe at him.

But it seems Ms Victoria had the last word, with Ms Green saying the Liberal MP later interjected: ‘‘I won’t forget.’’

We got a two horse race in Kooyong between the two factional candidaites. and now we have only 2 people running for higgins, and kelly will storm to victory on the back of factional support. a one horse race in caulfield, and the onlly challenger fizty will get crushed like a grape.

This is a woman who’s husband harasses local residents after council question time just because they have the gall to ask her embarrassing questions about her relationship and possible conflict of interests in council. What happens if she gets the nod for Aston? Will Mr McMullet get a job in her electoral office veto-ing every constituent who wants to ask her embarrassing questions? Coz if he does – he’s gonna be a busy boy!!

  249. Dee was awful at the Deakin preselection. She may be a nice lady with good intentions, but she is better suited to local government rather than federal politics.

If she can’t win Deakin in an effective two-horse race against Phil Barresi (ignoring Mad Ken) then what chance would she have in a field of 10 (again, ignoring Mad Ken)?

    Posted by Anonski | August 1, 2009, 0:31
  250. Don’t be too harsh on Dee. Compare her to ALP Federal Victorian backbenchers such as Darren Cheeseman, Mike Symon and Maria Vamvakinou and she looks very good.

    Posted by Anon | August 1, 2009, 0:46
  251. Dee would be a better candidate than future “Cabinent Minister” Kelly O’Dwyer.

That said, she is still one of the weaker candidates in that list of 11.

It seems that Kelly’s greatest talent is pulling the wool over the eyes of otherwise politically astute people.

She is an executive at the NAB. Big deal! At least 700 other people of NAB’s workforce of 24.500 have the same title.

    Big f*c#ing deal.

    Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009, 12:44
  256. Sweety, where do I begin? She is just sooo tawdry – and that hair!!.

    Let’s see now –

Stands for council with a scare campaign of ‘don’t change FTG’s name’. There never was any suggestion that it was going to change it’s name but that didn’t seem to stop her shouting it from the roof-tops.

Commits to a full term in council then, at the first opportunity, seeks yet another preselection. Was she EVER serious about being a councillor?

Is associated with the KRA (just ask her scrutineer and KRA ex Prez Petey B).

Is part of the Local Lib banking mob (just how many libs does it take to run a local bank anyway?)

Publicly supports a grog shop that her son works at.

    and this –

    http://www.vexnews.com/news/3448/dirt-flies-poor-tenants-make-basil-de-jong-filthy-rich-while-local-councillors-might-find-the-mud-sticks/

also, on a personal note, she has the most awful dress sense. Where is Carson Kressley when you need him?

I do hope that deliciously cute Dazza P gets the nod – he’s such a hunk.

    Love to all
