BIG KIM: Push to make Beazley the Ambassador to the United States

kimbeazleyjob The news that the US President Barack Obama’s administration will announce its new Ambassador to Australia should prompt the Rudd Government to appoint former Labor Leader Kim Beazley as Australia’s representative in Washington DC, according to high-ranking federal government insiders.

Kim Beazley is also regarded as a walking encyclopedia on American history and politics.

They say that incumbent Ambassador Dennis Richardson is a perfectly respectable chap, a career public servant, brought in as a Hawke adviser and later the boss of ASIO who enjoyed the respect of both sides of politics. He was appointed by the Howard government in 2005 and his five year term will expire in June next year. Richardson is not expected to be re-appointed as the Ambassador gig was considered a prestigious retirement posting.

Most in government expect the federal election will be over and Malcolm Turnbull sent packing back to investment banking by mid next year. We’re not so sure that an eminence as stubborn as Turnbull could be written off as easily as dodgy assets on an HIH balance sheet, but it’s certainly currently the prevailing thinking in chilly Canberra as the government prepares to tear Malcolm a new one this week.

timfischerThe Rudd Government’s record of appointing senior conservative figures to a number of positions, including the behatted, befuddled Arabist former Nationals leader Tim Fischer is such an exemplary one that some in government circles believe it’s easier for Opposition linked people to get senior appointments out of this government than for their own to get the nod.

“The Prime Minister has one big chance to prove that impression wrong. And to appropriately recognise and make use of Labor’s most impressive former Leader wasn’t Prime Minister, and that’s Big Kim,” the senior insider told VEXNEWS this morning.

“There could be no more powerful demonstration of the significance the Australian Government invests in its relationship with our American allies than to appoint one of Labor’s most loved sons,” they said.

  2. The only issue would be whether or not Big Kim wants the gig. You may have to direct the enquiry thru his lovely wife Susie, I suspect…

  4. Ah, so, ignorance, prejudice and factual inaccuracy all rolled into one! I think you should stay in the dark, Mr Ed.

  5. No one would be better qualified or suited than Kim Beazley. It makes perfect sense.

  6. Greta idea. He could drop in and do ‘Oprah’. They have much in common: one fat useless slug interviewing the other.

  15. I’m not sure Kim’s knowledge of the english language is up to scratch.

I had to knock back Hugh Borrowman back when he wnated to become the German ambassador for this same reason.

    Regards,

    the pm.

  17. Can we remind patriot commenters that most comments of a non-weird non-sexual nature are perfectly OK but what isn’t OK are comments that impersonate other people.
