THEANA TRIUMPH: Victorian Liberal MP comfortably defeats preselection challenge

murraythompson Liberal powerhouse Theana Thompson’s husband Murray has comfortably seen off a challenge from Baillieu faction hopeful Margaret Fitzherbert for Liberal preselection in Sandringham this evening.

In a smashing victory for Theana, known respectfully by her many followers as the “Bayside Boadicea,” her husband received 45 votes against 7 for Fitzherbert.

Ominously, Theana is believed to be aware of the identity (or at least highly suspicious) of the seven rogue votes who strayed. Whether they will be game to attend party meetings or fundraisers in the area again is not known at this time.

  6. You sayin there is only 52 Liberal members in a prized seat?

  9. Fitzy was completely smashed right out of the ball park. Hard to recover from such a dismal performance. Krogerites are looking for a clean sweep it seems. Their hardest task will be defeating lou lou in Wannon – that will be very difficult.

  12. There are more than 52 members in a prized Liberal seat Anonymous. Preselection was run on old rules as a sitting member was challenged. It was not a plebiscite as in new rules for retirements or vacancies. Obviously, branch delegates stood firm for Murray plus a goodly number of outsiders.

  13. why would the sandringham crew vote for someone who is brighton electorate chair, who has zero interest in the local people & the local issues, & who only skipped over the border to sandringham because louise is staying put in brighton? there was never any mileage in running an ‘anyone but murray’ challenger in this race

  14. It is precisely this sort of result from the conservative party that will consign them to perpetual irrelevance and opposition.

Madge Fitz should come to the Democrats – seriously honey… couldn’t get much worse than where you are right now!

Incorrect anonymous and Giddy Up. There are a couple of hundred members in the seat. The reason for the low number of voters at this pre-selection is because it was under the old delegate system of 2/4 members per branch. This applied to any challenge against sitting members that occurred at this election. Had Murray retired or if he is challenged in four years time the new system will apply. The reason for the anomaly here was because it was part of the compromise agreement to obtain Ted’s support for the reforms. I.E I will support your reforms if I can protect my sitting members. It obviously worked as there was only one challenge against any sitting member and that produced a sweeping victory to the incumbent.

  16. 52 Lib delegates are based on old system of 2 delegatres per branch – not a plebescite as applies to non encumbent Lib seats. Sandringham’s membership is strong .

  18. lots of people nominating for the liberal upper house slots according to reports from Admin Committee members. Will be interesting to see which sitting members get knocked out. Most should.
