ALAN TUDGE WINS: Aston Liberal preselection at the speed of live

astonlive Despite The Age’s Misha Schubert this morning on Insiders claiming the Aston Liberal preselection was being held tomorrow, VEXNEWS will be bringing you news from the outer south-eastern suburbs seat during the day.

It’s going to be a marathon effort.

The proceedings started at 9.30 this morning, just before Schubert’s pronouncement that it was all happening tomorrow.

Our patriot correspondents on the spot tell VEXNEWS that with eleven candidates, the round tables, lunch and speeches will take the patriots through to at least 3.30pm, when it is anticipated that the voting will commence and a result hopefully in by around 6pm.

UPDATE: 132 of 155 delegates present, speeches began around 1pm after the round-tables…

Convention votes to proceed at 3.13pm

Kenneth Aldred
Neil Angus
Terry Barnes
Michael Flynn
Michael Kabos
James Matheson
Nick McGowan
Sue McMillan
Darren Pearce
Deanne Ryall
Alan Tudge

Kabos, Pearce, Aldred, Flynn all eliminated in first round as at 3.41pm

Mathieson and McMillan out in second round at 4.05pm

Barnes and Ryall drop out in third round at 4.19pm

McGowan now out as at 4.31pm. Now between Neil Angus and Alan Tudge.

Tudge wins as at 4.45pm. A victory for the true ‘traversers’. Congratulations to him for a big effort that ultimately succeeded and now he now has to hang on to the seat despite nationwide opinion polls showing it could fall to Labor if the current trend continues and the out-of-towner being potentially vulnerable to a local opponent, should the ALP go that way.

  1. Who Am I?

I am running for Aston today, even though I don’t live in the electorate, have never lived in the electorate, and do not know a single person in it.

I have pronounced loudly and clearly that senior Krogerites, especially Scott Ryan, have stitched this up for me, and that I will be in Parliament within a year.

In his farewell speech, my former boss and fellow ALP supporter, thanked a number of former advisers who had made a difference to him. I was not one of them.

Despite every new pre-selected candidate this year being a staffer, I think another staffer should be put in parliament, despite warnings from John Howard to the contrary.

As demonstrated by the finest website in the land, my communications with Aston Liberal Party Members are full of lies and half-truths.

I am completely lame. I use words like traverse, and take pictures of my kids selling lemonade in an attempt to impress voters.

I was elected on an anti-Liberal, anti-VSU ticket to the Student Council at Melbourne University. If what I say is true, and Scott Ryan does support me, shame on the lot of them.

I campaigned against State Liberal Governments in the 1990s, yet do not disclose this in my affidavit of contention.

I did not become a member of the Liberal Party until my mid-30s, and some 8 months after being employed as an adviser.

I was not liked by my former boss, Alexander Downer. He often supports his former advisers, but has said nothing about me.

I believe in compulsory unionism. Everything to the contrary is a lie. Every MP who claims they believe in VSU, but now support me, is also a liar.

I pretended to have an international consultancy ‘Company’, when really I was a sole-trader with no contact details.

I tried to take the credit for doing pro-bono work for the Red Cross and other NGOs, when really I was being paid my normal wages by my employer to do pro-bono work on my employer’s behalf.

Against his wishes, I feign deep friendships with Nick Wakeling and anyone else that might have once passed through Aston in a desperate attempt to impress Aston locals.

I use Photoshop in manipulative ways, to pass off newspaper articles I’ve written as being under the masthead when they were not even on the front page.

I support PR in lower houses even though this is detrimental to the interests of the Liberal Party and good government.

My political heros are left-wing anthropologist, Margaret Mead, and radical left state parliamentarian, Mary Wooldridge.

I am not very popular amongst the local branch members in Aston.

  4. Aaron – the people of Aston are wise indeed. They wont do something stupid like preselect Tudgey le Fudgey.

  5. I think that the people of Aston deserve someone who is not a staffer, who lives local, who has been a party member for a significant period of time and contributed in a meaningful way, and who shares the same values as local residents and party members out this way.
It seems that Alan Tudge fails on all four levels.

  6. Too many staffers in recent times, and non resident candidates, Kooyong and Higgins, both staffers and both live in each others seats!

Give me leaders, the country is crying out for leaders, not staffers, and they want local representatives

  7. How is Alan al-Age le Fudgey la Fakey going?

Has he given speeches of smear and fear?
Has he confused delegates with his fudge and smudge?
Has he answered questions with lies and cries?
Has he been both turk and french?
Has he used the word traverse yet?

    And you will love it!

He also walked with a limp and has a funny big head. Hope his kids (recently married I understand) DO turn out to look like him.

  44. The only reason that Tudge won was because Tracey MacGregor mobilised a anyone-but-Angus movement. She hates him because he stands as an obstacle to her desire to get preselected in Forest Hill. Her plan of attack was to ridicule him for not attacking Kirstie Marshall for being a non-local. Ironically in the process, she has now handed preselection to a non-local traverser, who will be vulnerable to a local ALP candidate.
    Thank you Tracie.

    Doesn’t make any sense.

  54. Bet all you Tudgey haters feel a bit silly. Appears to me you have two choices come the next Federal Election.

    1. Eat your $hIt sandwich and work like hell to get him elected.
    or
    2. Do nothing and hand the seat over to Labor.

    Pick your poison……

    Posted by Tilly Aston | September 20, 2009, 22:09
  55. If the ALP runs a strong local candidate against Tudge and pumps in $300,000, with a 3-4% national swing towards the ALP winning Aston, held currently by the Libs by 5.05%, will be easy.

When the tsunami of Kevin 2010 comes along there will not be many Federal Vic Libs left.

Today the Aston preselectors gifted their beloved seat to the ALP.

    Posted by Anon | September 20, 2009, 22:21
  56. “Aston Watcher” from what I heard Angus kept taking all the votes from the ones who dropped out so that’s why it took Tudgey so long! Pretty amazing it did take that long though when he had such a start.

Posted by James from Wantirna | September 20, 2009, 23:43
  57. The Turks didnt support Matheson, They supported Tudge because Wells & Pearce didnt want him and wanted to fire a parting blow from Aston. I stitched up Mt Waverley preselection by doing a deal to support Tudge as my own turks are splintering around me refusing to support me after i went to sleep for the last 4 weeks of the last state campaign.

    Posted by Giddy Up | September 21, 2009, 9:09
  58. Tudge wasn’t voted in on merit but as a result of a few several self serving party members who have their own agendas. What ever happened to party first???

    Posted by Disillusioned | September 21, 2009, 11:31
  59. So now that Aston has come and gone, is this where we all land?

    - Nick Wakeling is deceitful and a coward.

    - Mary Wooldridge is a bigot, and a bad example for all aspiring young women in the party.

    - Alan Tudge is strong-willed and deserves much praise for his efforts, but was the first choice of only a handful of delegates.

    - Dee Ryall is a fast learner and strong improver, and is most likely the next member for Deakin.

    - Tracie Macgregor is a petty mediocrity.

    - Neil Angus is finished.

    - Nick McGowan will be back.

    - Members of the MULC crowd who voted for or supported Tudge are unprincipled.

    - The Gidley Crew can spite whoever they wish, but ultimately have no one but themselves to blame for their predicament

    - Chris Pearce has no legacy.

    Fair assessment?

  62. The McGowan voters switched to Tudge after McGowan was eliminated in the penultimate round. Tudge numbers were solid but not enough until the last round, when the anyone-but-Angus votes went for Tudge, giving him the win. People who had been on Angus’s Forest Hill campaign savaged him during questions, a fact not ignored by the claque of state council delegates busy with their i-phones in the back row. On a side issue, the Vex anti-Tudge campaign was mentioned by quite a few delegates. If their views are an indication of their votes, it probably got him a few & lost him none. So Vex can claim to have assisted the Tudge victory.

  63. Review of Lay of the Land’s assessment.

  64. Are the MULCer fu#tards and Gidley Crew now hard core Jeffistas given their support of Tudgey le Fudgey, close personal buddy of Greg Hunt and Mary Wooldridge?

It seems the Kroger faction has no discipline, no direction and no principles.

    Shame on them all.

That Kroger camp votes delivered Aston to such a lefty is a source of huge embarrassment to this once proud faction.

    Posted by Anon | September 21, 2009, 22:44
  65. Remember Peter Nugent and weep Aston!

As possibly the ‘leftiest’ of them all, Peter secured Aston and made it safe … not by blindly following the party line, but by honest toil and decency.

Mr Trudge is now our candidate, so get behind him and build on Peter’s legacy. (and please remember that the whole world can view this site and the awful comments within it).

    Posted by Oldtimer | September 22, 2009, 15:41
  66. Well said Oldtimer. At Peter’s funeral John Howard said that whilst he and Peter regularly disagreed on many things – he (Peter) had integrity, compassion, decency and a genuine belief in helping others less fortunate.

The right-wingers who thought they had control over Aston, wrote the most appalling things about the eventual candidate, and who are only interested in the almightly dollar – got burned at the pre-selection.

Am delighted that the rank and file of Aston Libs weren’t fooled by the tactics of the hardliners and made a common sense decision.

Maybe now they will realise that they are past it, the balance of power has shifted away from them and they will find something else to do.

  67. Adrian Jackson, you appear to be a man who has a small mind and a big grudge. Maybe you should spend some more time building up your own self esteeme than knocking others down. Your arch enemy seems to have built a nice life for himself whilst you are still bitter and twisted.

  68. Sue Moon (09 Jul 10) the problem is Kabos is one of those murderous supporters of the Iraq war invasion.

100,000 Iraqi civilians killed for no reason including children and cute little babies. This website like other site, (eg) Herald Sun comments, can be quite colourful.

I hope a big B Double truck collects him as he limps across a freeway handing out his pathetic Liberal leaflets in the Electorate of Bruce where he finally did get preselected (no body else probably wanted it). Of couse he will not win.

As for my self 3 properties (2 producing income), no debts and living in Middle Park.

I am very content except when it comes to Liberal fascists and incompetent Labour bogans pretending they have the voters interest at heart.
