VETO: Rob Hulls says no to plans for government to meddle in religious organisations

robhulls Victorian Deputy Premier Rob Hulls has disappointed the left-wing press this morning by revealing the government was not going to require religious groups to hire people with incompatible beliefs and lifestyles.

A parliamentary committee, run by retiring inner-city Socialist Left MP Carlo Carli has been exploring changing the laws in a way that had provoked grave concern among religious organisations of all kinds.

Archbishop Dennis Hart has endorsed the Hulls’ move.

Political observers say that Hulls’s claim the government never planned to change the law to undermine church groups is right but that it allowed Carli’s committee to proceed on a “frolic of its own of a politically stupid nature.”

While the story hadn’t had much traction among the secular mainstream press, VEXNEWS and outer suburban local press reported on the grave concerns of people of faith on this plan for unprecedented government meddling in Christian, Jewish and Islamic organisations.

If you’ve ever doubted the bias of The Age or Sunday Age in particular, compare its headline reporting this story today:

Government bows to religious right

and the wire story headline:

Church group discrimination controversy

Little wonder the Sunday Age is in such a crisis, with much talk of a shift to a seven-day roster which could cause the termination of Sunday staff like Michael Bachelard or Melissa Fyfe and their possible return to Fairfax local newspapers.

By contrast, VEXNEWS previous headline on the plan told the story in a way you’d probably never see in the Sunday Age:

HULLSTOPIA: Will the Victorian Government force religious schools to hire devil worshippers?

That’s why they call us news fair and balanced.

And on this day of celebration for the Geelong fanatic state Attorney-General, we acknowledge that he has made the right move and hope he makes more of them.

If the state government is committed to listening, then it might get a better hearing at next year’s Victorian election.

  1. You can understand Minaret College not wanting to employ a school teacher of Jewish faith and vice versa with Yeshivah College.

But a single mum? Who the hell is she going to offend?

What about a Jewish gay man (and let’s face it there are a few) not allowed to teach at Mt Scopus?

Or a lesbian PE teacher (again not uncommon) called Molly Malone working at Genazzano?

Are we really living in the dark ages?

  4. About the only intelligent quote from the Communists was from one of their leaders (can’t remember which one) “Religion is the Opium of the people”

  7. Bible according to Hulls.
“Thou shalt not give the sacrament to the flock if thou’st Gay or a single mum, but thy will be done on earth if you are a Hulls believer, as you can partake in the the wine from one of the Church’s protected Pedophile clergy”.
Praise be to the great protector and white Knight of social justice!!

  8. These taxpayer subsidised institutions should make their financial records publicly available as a condition of government funding and tax exemptions. Furthermore, the Old Testament story of David and Jonathon is one of the greatest gay love stories of our time.
