Lawrence Money has been ousted from his main gig as one of a duet de gossip column at The Age newspaper.
The old bloke was given his marching orders today by editor Paul Ramadge who wanted to breathe new life into the back page and figured that’d be difficult if he kept His Grouchness on-board.
Rambo has thrown ‘Dirty Larry’ a bone by giving him what will end up being a weekly column according to Age insiders.
It is believed to be a gradual but firmly imposed early retirement for Lawrence who has been dishing out the slop for decades. We can’t imagine he’s happy, he rarely seems to be joyful unless incorrectly marking his card out at Cranbourne golf club where he is known for the creative accounting of his score.
Anyone who’s anyone in Melbourne has been slagged by Lawrence of Kensington at some stage. The old perv popped your correspondent’s cherry while he was still in his late teens. He eventually gave up the ghost as we demonstrated that in the gossip arsenal while he was a bigger bore we are of higher calibre.
Instead of the duet, the increasingly stylish Suzanne Carbone will be firmly in charge of a new gossip offering called Postcode 3000.
Carbone is clearly much better placed to take this on, given the average age of the contacts in Lawrence’s cobweb covered Rolodex is well above retirement age.
Dan Ziffer, well-liked around The Aged apparently, will also be on the job.
Money is gone. Happy days are here again. We firmly deny any intention of missing the old bugger.
Look out tomorrow as we reprise our greatest hits over the years against ‘Dirty Larry’.
Here is the copy of today’s announcement:
A NEW BACK PAGE
From Monday, we introduce a new back page for the News book on weekdays.
It will be edited by Kylie Northover, who moves to the role after a successful stint as Deputy Editor of EG.
In other moves:
Lawrence Money continues to write for the page but will take on a broader role as a senior writer.
Suzanne Carbone writes a new column called Postcode 3000.
Dan Ziffer returns to the paper as contributing editor of a column focused on Melbourne’s social scene.
Myf Warhurst joins us as a weekly columnist.
And we set out to have a bit more fun as we explore the lighter side of life in Melbourne.
Paul Ramadge
How sad he is a legend and a totally decent bloke.
Carbone is style and substance. We salute her.
How funny – Ziffer replaces Zimmer!
The old perv popped your correspondent’s cherry while he was still in his late teens…??
Did I miss something here? Give us the full story, Vex.
Lorry Money is a grumpy old sod – I guess his life has just been one disappointment after another so its left him a bitter ole prick.
I’m always rading the diary and thoroughly enjoy Lawrence’s effort compared to Suzy’s, believe it or not but experience counts!
I was getting the feeling that the section needed a revamp, though I’m surprised at your welcoming of Suzanne given her severe leftiness!
Suzy Carbone – time has not treated her face or figure well.
VEXNEWS critical of someone dishing out slop – how ironic.
It was Lawrence Money who gave oxygen to the ex Higgins lady Diane Anderson after she was expelled for heresy from the Melbourne Unitarian Church.
Now that Church has another loon, who claims it rigs its elections and that the Church is controlled by ASIO. Wonder if Mr Moneyman will report that. Probably depends on whether Diane wants it printed.
Lawrence is my hero
His yarns may be quaint and slightly obscure, but Lawrence Money is a unique wordsmith with a heart of gold.
Carbone is funny, but seems to be shrouded in a bubble of conceit. Out of touch with young groovers – needs to stop being jealous of Gen Y.
