BACK TO THE FUTURE: Now he’s leaving, The Age is being mean to parent company Chairman Ron Walker again…

rwalkerofmelbourne ronhated Back in the day, Ron Walker was more frequently lashed in the left-wing pages of The Age than practically any other victim.

His Crown Casino, his Grand Prix, his prolific fundraising as the Liberal party treasurer, his flashy tailored Saville Row suits, his spivdom in general was seen as the paragon of all evil in the world.

When elected to the board and then Chairman of Fairfax, The Age began to treat with him with vastly more deference. This reached its apex under the dud editorship of Andrew Jaspan – a man so slimy he could be used as an industrial lubricant – where Walker was permitted to opine prominently in the letters section on Liberal party members merely as “R.Walker of Melbourne” rather than listing full name and former party role as would normally have been the case.

Walker’s kid-glove treatment mainly came through the sound of silence: what The Age didn’t print about the parent company Chairman in recent years.

Now he’s announced his intention to quit as Chairman (or was forced out depending on your perspective in his feud with the hocked old-money Fairfax family), it seems the kid-gloves are now off. Walker bashing has now resumed, on the front-page no less with a yawn non-story that demonises reasonably innocent conduct. The Age’s credibility as a journal of record lost long, long ago, it has now found a somewhat dusty and cob-webbed file named “Vendetta”. Or to biblically quote the former Prime Minister Paul Keating “the dog has returned to its vomit.”

  1. The age is dodgy and corrupt, looking after their own Brimbank style… call in the Brouwer to investigate!

  4. Was there ever a road the mouth-foaming Green Pary fundamentalists at the TalibAge did not oppose.

Of course because developers lobbied it must be a corrupt decision! After all, developers are all corrupt (unless you are a bicycle riding inner sububurban greenie/leftie millionaire snapping up terrace houses). We all know that the democratic rights that inner suburban trandies accrue to themselves do not accrue to developers or, indeed, anyone in the outer suburbs.

Fact is that you couldn’t build anything in the west if these extremist crackpots had their way, because these bloody weeds (“Native grasslands”) mysteriously appear in the path of every major project in the west.

Can’t make the west too desirable a place to live, can we? And if everybody starts buying land in the west, now with the Deer Park By-Pass only 20 minutes from the city, who is going to pay exortionate prices for the inner-suburban terraces so avariciously acquired by the tofu set.

  5. Don’t worry Ron, I hear there’s going to be a protection money style racket where you get to pay money to Fairfax and they go easy on your scandals and praise your successes. $25K a month or like that.

Could be become a good cash-cow.

  8. At least its not a right wing kiddies book that only entices people to read to by the size of their headlines and stories. The herald suns propaghanda only fools the weak and pathetic. Don’t you think an information based paper that is based on solid journalism with fundamental social and ethical values to back up their information is better than a paper that has massive headlines(only there to sell the paper), huge pictures & heaps of ads, yet the actual articles take up less than a quarter of the page. Herald Sun=propaghanda paper loosly based on fact! Age=Solid paper based on fact with info to back it up!

  9. Not sure where you’re looking for one of those papers that has “solid journalism with fundamental social and ethical values to back up their information” but the Age and the other Fairfax newspapers isn’t it.
