PARANOIA: Senior Victorian Liberal bans his own staff from email
Victorian Liberal upper house leader David Davis has banned his parliamentary staff from having their own email accounts.
Liberal sources say Davis insists that his staff only email from his office from his own email account and not from ones created in their own name.
VEXNEWS understands they are the only Victorian parliamentary electorate office staff in the state not entrusted with their own email account.
“It’s a bizarre situation. A certain level of paranoia in politics is probably wise but this is embarrassing and ridiculous,” one party insider told VEXNEWS.
Davis is rumoured to have asked Parliamentary Services IT boffins to ban Facebook, porn sites, gmail, hotmail and other free email services from being accessed from his electorate and parliamentary offices. We understand he was told that wasn’t possible but that he’s still keen to prevent his staff from sending any form of communication unless he is aware of it and given prior approval.
The Legislative Council party leader has been the subject of nearly constant speculation from his largely unsupportive backbench. They say he was essentially imposed on them by the party leader Ted Baillieu and has little support other than from Wendy Lovell, his deputy. Even one-time former strong ally Richard Dalla Riva has turned on Davis, regarding him as a “slimy, disloyal dog” according to one source familiar with their fractured friendship.
Keen parliamentary observers say Davis hasn’t been coping with the strain of his high office very well. Aside from hitting the bottle, to limits even his forebears in the always well-lubricated Legislative Council would have been impressed by, Davis has been criticised by colleagues on both sides of the chamber for being vague, reneging on deals and not providing a clear sense of direction to his own side.
He is a man under strain.

That exists in some left wing unions. Only one email account, none for the organisers. Can’t trust them, might be plotting against the boss.
I too should have banned myself from using email and not landed myself in such hot water.

If that advice was truly received from Parliamentary Services, then the person giving the advice is a charlatan. There are numerous internet filtering services available – from parental control software to enterprise-class filtering – that would provide exactly this service.
But I can’t help thinking that a simpler solution would be to fire untrusted staff.
David Davis is actually one of the better performers, which makes me very sad.
There has been no renewal, there is no energy left in our State MPs whether younger or older and we accordingly will fail in 2010 and 2014.
We might have a chance in 2018.
Sounds fair enough. Only official emails related to the electorate or a minister or shadow ministers job should be sent by public servants and MP’s using taxpayer funded computers and office space.
