Former Victorian Liberal party director Julian Sheezel was a surprise announcement this week for the SA party boss role.
He’ll be running the state campaign next year and is believed to be returning to Melbourne after that.
Another interstater – former Brendan Nelson staffer and unsuccessful Bradfield preselection candidate – Simon Berger had been considered for the role but Sheezel got the nod.
It’s not the first time, campaign strategists have been imported in SA state politics. The previous state election saw Labor recruit a campaign director from Victoria in the form of now Senator and former Vic ALP State Secretary David Feeney. In short time, Feeney had restored the finances of the branch and ran a very effective campaign that got Premier Mike Rann comfortably re-elected. Rann seemed rather impressed with the lad, referring to him as “my Eisenhower”.
Sheezel has a tougher assignment but is expected to do well in the role in toughening up the SA Opposition.
Julian will do well and most thinking and caring people will wish him well.
