UNDISCLOSED: Tassie state MPs to make motza from their own land tax plans

mrgreedy The Tasmanian Liberals and Greens have pledged to cut [pdf] or “review” with a view to scrapping land tax without disclosing the move would benefit many of their own Members of the State Parliament, according to one shocked observer.

Documents obtained by VEXNEWS reveal that the Greens and Liberals have a number of potential beneficiaries of the tax cut that impacts on investment properties, beach-houses and second homes. Most property that isn’t a principal place of residence is subject to land tax.

One insider said the MPs involved were not being honest about what they stood to gain from their own policies:

It seems at the height of the spring racing season that great horse “Self Interest” is alive and well inside the Tasmanian Libs and Greens.

Another explained:

It should be illegal for MP’s to propose policies that would personally benefit them without fully disclosing what they stand to gain from the change. It’s not right they use their public office to make private gains.

Financial questions have also been raised over Tasmanian based millionaire Senator Bob Brown, who uses false claims of impending bankruptcy to raise private funds from donors to back quixotic legal challenges against logging and other job-creating industries.

Brown and his partner have extensive property interests and would also benefit from the tax changes supported by his Greens state parliamentary comrades. Tasmanian Greens leader's luxury beach-house

  2. Only an independent commission against corruption can stop this.

  3. Local Councillors are prohibited from voting on anything in which they have a pecuniary interest.

For example if a Council is about to award their telephone contract, a Telstra share owning Councillor is prohibited from voting – as stupid as that is – you think a pissy Council contract with affect the Telstra share-price and hence the Councillors wealth ?!?!

But in State Governments, where the dollars are many hundreds of times the size, there is no such prohibition.

The lies and cheating of State Government knows no bounds.

  7. Tasmania is a parasitic rump and should not be a state. Join them with SA (Victoria wouldn;t want them).

How dare they reduce state tax revenue for personal benefit whilst they live of the collective mainland tit.

  10. Labor government in Tasmania must see themselves as in REAL trouble if they release and push this kind of rubbish. Getting rid of land tax has been Liberal policy for a long time and it is only now when an election looms that the Labor apparatchiks scream foul. Yeah Yeah move on to something real.
