HSU FROLICS: Right’s family feud reveals conflicting alliances

marlene
Marlene Kairouz, the Labor moderate patriot MP we cheered on in her triumph over ugly lefty militant Les Twentyman in the Kororoit by-election, offers observers a real insight into just how complex this current Victorian Health Services Union election can be. The HSU covers tens of thousands of members in Victorian hospitals, aged care facilities and such.

Marlene’s mum Mrs Kairouz is an HSU member who works at a major metropolitan Hospital and is a strong supporter of the Doug Byron “Moving Forward” group backed by pro-Conroy elements within the Labor Unity group. She is a close chum of the Byron group’s Mario Toro, a former Branch Committee of Management member who is now running for the position of Trustee.

But of course, those familiar with these things, all three of you, will note that Marlene Kairouz draws her support from the SDA union of patriots, which – last time we looked – is in a kind of rival Right group dubbed perhaps uncharitably as the “Ambition Faction”. They see themselves to be the “one and true Labor Unity” and we’re not likely to argue such things with a power so righteous. But whatever you call them they are – currently at least – opposed to the Conroy group.

Some say that the Ambition Faction has strongly backed the Marco Bolano “Stronger Together” group with considerable financial support from a patriotic consortium of NUW and SDA slush funds, organised by their some-time ally the astute Senator David Feeney who has a close political association with Jeff and Kathy Jackson.

That leaves Marlene supporting Marco and Marlene’s mum supporting Doug. How very complicated.

That leaves Marlene supporting Marco and Marlene’s mum supporting Doug. How very complicated.

THEN THERE WAS DOUG
Also complicated is the saga involving Fegan backed candidate and long-time HSU official Doug Byron.

On the weekend, a previously secret payout by the HSU to a victim of alleged sexual harassment by Byron was revealed by the Sunday Herald Sun and Sunday Age. The victim was allegedly paid $20,000 but he denies it and says he knew nothing of it. The affidavits make for ugly reading, as is usually the case in legal proceedings but in the interests of decorum we’ve decided not to publish them. The matter was settled out of court with union members’ funds, according to the press reports. We doubt the incident will have much effect on the poll.

In response, Byron’s campaign team, run by the wily Pauline Fegan, has reportedly sent out a response by direct mail denying the allegations. The letter apparently came from Doug Byron’s wife, a curious approach but one that might resonate with the members of the union seeking reassurance that the candidate isn’t such a nasty chap after all.

Gender issues are interesting within the female-dominated union, Byron and Bolano are both male candidates for secretary, both with stories of their behaviour that have spread far and wide within the membership. Their younger female rival Diana Asmar will be hoping to pick up support, partly as a result but she too has been the subject of sledging attacks, from both her male rivals.

While the campaigns have used everything from direct mail, sms, even Youtube to get their message, it seems that no campaign tool has been more effective than the hospital bush telegraph on which bad news travels very fast.

Candidates in all teams tell VEXNEWS there’s a high level of awareness of recent union scandals and discord but that could translate into voter apathy. The turn-outs in trade union elections often aren’t high.

Other than the sex harassment claims, the allegations against Byron include that he’s Pauline Fegan’s puppet, is fat and lazy, has been at the union for two decades and generally isn’t up to the job. Byron’s supporters insist he’s a salt of the earth type, with a loving wife and a healthy respect for the wise authority of Pauline Fegan, from whom all knowledge comes.

Claims against his female opponent Diana Asmar, primarily it seems spread by Fegan’s mate Joyce Robinson who is a Tiberius with the union-funded telephone according to informed sources, include that she’s a member of the ALP (like Pauline Fegan) and is the mayor of Darebin who is a politician. And all politicians are bad. At one stage Bolano’s team seemed convinced Asmar would be knocked out by the Australian Electoral Commission for not being a union member but that claim was disproven when the AEC accepted all nominations.

NAUGHTY BENNY
The local press in Asmar’s municipality of Darebin – where she is mayor – reports that one of her council colleagues has been anonymously criticising Diana’s decision to take a leave of absence as mayor to campaign in the union election. The confidential informant is believed to be HSU employee Ben Morgan, who is closely aligned with Terri Seymour, a key ally of the Jackson and Bolano ticket. Morgan is currently wearing three somewhat conflicting hats, HSU campaigner, HSU employee and Darebin councillor. That’s quite a collection the cheeky patriot has got going, just in time for the Spring Racing Carnival. Clearly a man of style.

The Bolano team has accused Diana of being in league with Doug Byron and the Byron team has accused Dianna of being in league with Marco Bolano,” explained one amused union insider.

Bolano’s foes in the Fegan/Byron camp say that he is a “hot-head and nut-case” prone to violent outbursts. That’s not been VEXNEWS’s experience or observation of him but we suppose elections do bring out these things. Somewhat contradictory of that claim is their assertion that he is “controlled” by Jeff Jackson.

By contrast his campaign videos show a kind and gentle Marco, a loving Dad and dutiful husband whose home-made pasta looked sufficiently enticing for us to start grovelling for an invitation.

A BLOODY BIG MESS
Michael Bachelard in the Sunday Age is rarely worth quoting except for the purposes of shaming him but he did kind of sum up the situation in the Victorian HSU #1 branch when he described them as “Australia’s most dysfunctional union.”

Patriots of all stripes can only hope that this election gives the members one cohesive HSU that moves forward, stronger together.

The ballots are sent out late next week and will be “live” for nearly a month.

  11. The good name of a proud patriot – Ben Morgan has been tarnished by this factionally incorrect article.

Morgz has more intergrity, drive and committment to looking after the members of the HSU than any of those three factions, or the factional power-brokers supporting them.

My message to you is quite simple: hacks beware. The time will come when your rent-seeking will come to an end.

    Posted by Mallrat | October 29, 2009, 20:52
  12. Did you say factionally incorrect or factually incorrect?

We’re happy to concede the former but not the latter.

    Posted by VEXNEWS | October 29, 2009, 20:58
  13. Mallrat, you are really kidding about Morgan – some sort of a sick joke. He never has, and never will care about the members – so get real. Editor – you did an oops organisers who are not candidates for the elections are not allowed to campaign. Ha Ha, been caught again Ben, oh sorry your mentor Seyless will look after you and perhaps you can go crying to that person in charge of MST, you know that one who should not be campaigning too.

I feel a bit sorry for Marlene, there is always payback with the Jackson, Seymour group so you have really sold your soul to them. Good on your mother for voting for who she believes in, after all she works in the industry and should know

  14. Lest there be any doubt, we think Ben has been cheeky but merely doing what he thinks is right by his chums. Can’t fault him too much for that.

He also snubbed VEXNEWS’s fair and balanced opportunity to respond to claims of conversing with comrade Genevieve the Journo or whatever the nonenity’s name is.

As long as he showered afterwards, we’re sure his patriotic fervour is in tact.

    Godspeed to him.

  15. I hope HSU members reading this article enquire with Fair Work as to why ’slush funds’ are being used in a union election. Every damn cent should be spent on the members. Not on personal political ambitions. The HSU is a damn disgrace. Do they actually have any members left?

    Posted by Schedule 1B | October 29, 2009, 21:17
  16. That was factually Vex. Morgz is not campaigning and if I am not mistaken, staying above the fray and trying to look after the members interests by still being at work.

As for Anon, more gutless hack spivs who rent-seek and attack the characters of hard working, left hating patriots. If you were a real patriot, you’d get back to try and do numbers against some socialist drone or unwashed greenie in your local neighbourhood.

  18. It is really annoying to read inane comments from misguided imbeciles whining about Union funds being wasted on the HSU election campaign.

All three candidates are using their own funds. Or are people suggesting that the Federal Court appointed Administrator is corrupt? Oh, I forgot the Administrator has a suitcase full of wads of cash under his desk, which he hands out to candidates upon request.

Wake up, think of something interesting to say such as; “talk dirty to me Uncle Doug”.

  35. What’s Happening, I think I heard the conversation you refer to. I’m afraid CC wasn’t around, however two old HEF Dinosaurs Les Butler and Gayle Gills were, dragging their insignificant selves through some metro hospitals.
Les is of course running as VP on the Fegan/Byron ticket, and Gills is doing a bit of telephone propaganda for them. This is who they may have been referring to.

That’s Les Butler the proud EMPLOYER REPRESENTATIVE and Gayle Gills the CEO. Les as we all know is a loyal ally of the bosses and Gayle Gills an ally of a former corrupt HEF Secretary, whom helped herself to money from the union’s welfare fund to pay for personal cosmetic surgery; and also used her union credit card to purchase some saucy lingerie.

Any intelligent and ethical person would refer to them as idiots and a number of other things as well. However I don’t think you heard any such thing What’s Happening. Just your feeble attempt at psyching someone out isn’t it? I bet you’ve got them rattled.

  39. Here we go again – I always thought Les Butler was one Ms Seymour’s mentor and she was also a CEO so get over that.

The problem with this whole thing is at NO time are the members taken into consideration. The HSU is a political breeding ground for want to be politicans. Asmar, Seymour,Jackson you are all the same, you could not give a stuff about your members, never have and never will.

By the way the text messages being sent out by Stronger Together, have an Opt Out and Stop – surely this does not mean that the members are being charged for receiving texts. highly illegal I would have thought

  58. Well it didn’t take long for a failed Coburg Lawyer to make an appearance (anon November 4, 20.57).

Well in the great legal mind’s opinion a shonky youtube video is nothing but the truth.

What the video does not show, although it is available in better quality unedited video (and it’s coming soon), is Rob Morrey (on Fegan/Byron ticket) punching a security guard in the head, when being escorted from the building after assaulting Bolano.

And what is also on video, is the baboon jostling Bolano, shoving a pregnant woman who stood between him as he attempted to ‘king hit’ Bolano.

As I said, it’s coming soon.

I’ll make a prediction. If the Doug Byron ticket wins, you’ll see some spectacular infighting when the strong personalities of Butler & Fegan battle for supremacy of the HSU.

This whole election seeems a scam you all seem to have pollitical aspirations having spoken to dianne recently her aspirations seem grand , worth a vote even but she and after talking to her is a pollitician and nothing more. She did not show any evidance that the hsu will be any different although her vision is grand, The bolano team and the byron team although I have not spoken to either members seem to be a case of doubling the current problems. No one has any real solutions to the issue at hand and that is the union is f***cked. No one has a clue as to what has happened to roles that members undertake in the health system they crap on about pay and conditions. Its going to take a mighty effort from somebody for the union to gain a foothold in the establishments of public health and the roles that the members of this union undertake. Could go on but wont the truth of the matter is that the hsa has imploded and the only fair thing for it to do is role over and play dead as it is all but dead

  85. To concerned member. We could only imagine what the world would be like if people like you all over the world just rolled over and played dead. As a unionist it’s up to you to stand up for your rights not just sit back and wait for someone else to do it. Just because you like many others pay union dues does not entitle you to a say, that only comes about when you get off your ass and stand up and fight for your rights. So stop whining about what is wrong and do something that will change our union. VOTE and only then can you really have a say in where the union goes.

  86. Dear concerned member why don’t you contact Bolano. The campaign material should provide a contact.

You could also contact Byron, however all you’ll get from him is some loose commitment to look into the problems that 8 of his ticket, and his puppetmaster Fegan caused.

  87. ten years ago these relevations were floating around about the hsu, ten years ago nothing was done, what is really going to change now after an election? sure jackson and fegan wont be there or will they. The same pollitical influences will remain. One vote will not make a difference. All sides as ive said have grand plans and can do the talk. Really all that ive seen is personal attacks on candidates and a lot of bitch slapping it is a disgrace. The changes that are required are going to require a masive a mount of cash and where is that cash going to come from? They have gone from 24,000 members to 14000 members. To dont wait and see i was a workplace rep 10 years ago and tried to do something way back then got laughed at by members at the time. there is too much bullshit ingrained in this union and too many sheep. I will vote but do not see a vote as fixing the mess that has become the hsu. The vhia has been able to laugh in the face of the union they have the upper hand they know the hsu is a joke, management within hospitals laugh at the hsu. hsu reps on the floor for so long have been defacto recruiters for unions and even this tactic has seen membership decline. Some hospitals even gave time for unions to speak to new employees @ induction of new employees. I know at the Alfred No union official has been at one of these meetings that im aware of. i could go on and on

  88. Concerned member you sound like someone that gives a sh*t, good on you.

It should be pointed out that the Stronger Together ticket has not personally attacked any candidate or resorted to smear. The Fegan/Byron ticket has put out the filth, and they and the Asmar ticket have generally just made things up.

It is sad that HSU Delegates have been expected to be ticket collectors for Jackson/Fegan, more money for them, and more ALP votes!
And that’s all 2 of the tickets in this election are interested in: personal fortune and influence in the ALP.

I hear the VHIA and employers are sh*tting themselves at the prospect of Bolano winning, he worries them, and that’s a good sign.

Your vote will matter, I intend to take back my union, you should do the same comrade.

  89. Why are comments mentioning certain candidates being moderated? And why was the person who runs this site instructing lawyers in the Federal Court yesterday on behalf of a certain candidate yesyerday, in an unsuccessful attempt to interfere with stronger together’s campaign?

  90. How long before the above comment is deleted for partisan reasons?

    Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2009, 10:43
  91. LOL that’s a laugh, we spoke to lawyers from as many of the six different sides as we could pin down. Marco Bolano/ Jeff Jackson supporter Rob Elliott was there too assisting his candidate through a very messy situation. Nothing wrong with that, we tried to speak to him too but couldn’t get him off his mobile. Stand by for a detailed yarn on the saga on Monday. Quite amusing.

  92. Where has $300,000 come from to pay for Bolano’s campaign?

Jeff’s pimps or David Feeney’s slush fund.

All for ALP votes… Which means a vote for Bolano is a vote for rorts and corruption.

What a laugh VHIA sh..ting themselves with Marco. Perhaps they have heard about him – Marco the thug, Marco the bully – ask Worksafe about him. Anyhow, he will not be at the top, he will have the Jacksons and Seymour pulling the strings. By the way, what happened to Barrett – promises never came through.

Stronger Together is politically motivated by the Jacksons and Seymour due to the fact of their burning desire to enter politics.

Diana Asmar is a very good candidate and was treated in a disgusting way by Seymour and Jackson. However, I really doubt whether Diana has the experience to fix the bloody mess which is the HSU. Perhaps the next election she will be ready and I wish her luck in this and in future elections.

Moving Forward – well I know that the political aspirations are not there for Byron etc.but here again we have a problem of how you fix the mess and give the members the service they deserve. First thing they have to do is rid the union of the bullies that are working there. Employ staff you really care about unionism and get back to basics. Time will tell

  98. Bolano controlled by Jackson and Seymour, now that is hysterical.

Apparently Jackson couldn’t control Bolano when he was at his zenith as Secretary. So he is now supposed to control him in retirement???

I doubt that Bolano even knows that Seymour exists, perhaps remembering her as someone that hung around the HSU office doing nothing in particular. Seymour isn’t capable of controlling anything except her bowel, let alone Bolano.

Some people just make it up as they go along.

    Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2009, 17:13
  99. Anon 17.13 Yes Bolano does Seymour exists – believe me. Jackson cld not control Bolano when he was in control – because he did not want to – if there was something going down – send in the thug. Do not tell me that Jackson will retire and remember there are two Jacksons in this and the female version is the one to watch out for – and she is Terrie Seymours best friend.

Members get rid of Stronger Together, they will do nothing for you. Start again with whoever you vote in and hopefully the union will run as a union should FOR THE MEMBERS

  105. anon | November 7, 2009, 17:29, By a thug, do you mean someone that stands up to employers and fights for members.

Of course, you’d expect a Union Official to wine and dine with employers like Byron & Fegan.

Or you’d expect a Union Official to live by “the doctrines and policies of the ALP” as declared by the Mayor in her maiden mayoral speech, and roll over under orders from the Party.

anon | November 7, 2009, 17:29 you quite simply don’t smell like a trade unionist, and neither do two of the candidates in this election.

Yes, I have been a trade unionist all my working life – but intimidation of women by a union official like him is not on. 115. anon | November 8, 2009, 10:51, why don’t you specifically state how Bolano has actually cost the HSU any money. On the contrary he has made the HSU an enormous amount of money by the members he has recruited, and the people he has brought in who have also recruited by the truckload (no pun intended).

How many members have Byron, Robinson, Humpage, Yianoulatos, May and Dickson recruited between them? A fraction of a fraction.

Documentary evidence suggests that Byron cost the HSU $20000 in an out of court settlement for sexual harassment. It is an absolute fact that Fegan & 8 people on Byron’s ticket has cost the HSU $1000000 in self serving legal battles. Not to mention Urban Giftware. Don’t bother suggesting that that was an honourable pursuit of Jackson’s $15000, who the f**k spends $1000000 chasing $15000, but a fiscally bereft lunatic.

Allegations have been made against Matorana based on the allegations of a jailed & convicted thrill killer whom Matorana assisted in putting away.

Allegations have been made against Bolano that are pure fiction and are not substantiated by a fragment of evidence.

Yet Byron’s purile sexual harassment has been illustrated in both major Newspapers, and their source: the out of court settlement and Byron’s lawyer’s file! LOL. Guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.

You can throw around fictitious bulldust, but the facts are inescapable. Another fact is that your fictitious rants are those of someone that knows they are losing.

So here’s a suggestion, instead of posting as anon, how about using the tag Born Loser.

  116. Hey dodgy di-anna – this is a union election – either Dianna or Doug would be better than Bolano, the jacksons and Seymour. Byron is more experienced but Asmar will have her time in the future.
Please do not worry, perhaps Benjamin Morgan will be Mayor of Darebin (god help us) and the Seymour/Stephensons will still have strings to pull. Poor little Ben, and what will happen to Cook – will you have her cleaning houses, or visiting haunted houses with her cougar mate
