All hell is breaking loose in the failed state of New South Wales over federal ALP preselections, with VEXNEWS forecasts of Laurie Ferguson putting up a big fight proving correct.
He hasn’t needed to head off to the courts just yet, he has appealed to a higher authority than the Australian judiciary, his friend Julia Gillard.
THE GILLARDINE IS SHARPENED AND READY TO CHOP RIGHT-WING NECKS
The Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard is probably the best weapon of all to bring to internal ALP gun-fights. The high calibre lefty is believed to have made her views very clear to NSW Right numbers-man Senator Mark Arbib. The Iron Lady wants human teddy bear Laurie Ferguson “looked after” and we suspect Arbib will acquiesce regardless of arrangement trumpeted in the newspapers this morning about the Right getting this and the Left getting that.
Laurie looks like getting a safe seat, in keeping with his birthright and stacked branches in strategic locations. He’ll probably get Werriwa, once the home of Gough Whitlam and Mark Latham. Everyone else can wait for Laurie to be ready to retire, and they’ll wait patiently if they know what’s good for them.
PLEASE DON’T USE YOUR POWERS AGAINST US, LORD AND MASTER
The Prime Minister’s enthusiasm for using the ALP National Executive is well known in the corridors of Canberra power and most in the party prefer to discourage him from pursuing this by just doing what he wants. And what he wants will almost always coincide with what Julia Gillard wants. And that certainly includes looking after the human teddy bear who voted for Rudd in the caucus contest that made him Labor’s Supreme Leader.
The Supreme Leader Rudd will remain internally supreme for quite some time, many think, despite a rude shock in the form of the most recent Newspoll which showed his government slipping 7 points. His popularity remained very high.
HAYES NO WORSE OFF
Gillard’s intervention will probably mean that Mark Latham’s successor in Werriwa Chris Hayes is shunted off into a very marginal seat. He’ll understandably be very unhappy about this arrangement, although was probably going to be sent packing anyway under recently negotiated factional arrangements so is arguably no worse off for Gillard’s participation.
An area of ongoing patriotic interest in the mountain regions of the NSW failed state is the federal seat of Macquarie.
MOUNTAIN STOUSH
There, patriots report, lefty Bob Debus is up to his old tricks. It’s a wonder he doesn’t go blind, insiders say. Unable to let a day go by without sticking his bib in, the chronic attention-seeker Debus and his Hard Left cronies in NSW have thrust forward their candidate for the seat of Macquarie with a typical contempt for the rank and file in the form of out-of-touch lefty professional spin-meister Susan Templeman.
Templeman, a long-time PR and media consultant (also partner of long-time Debus mate and ultra-leftist ABC journalist Ron Fuller), has spent the last few days announcing to ALP Branch members in the electorate by letter and phone call that she is Bob’s preferred replacement and she is the candidate and there will be no correspondence entered into.
Popular Blue Mountains Mayor and long-time local Adam Searle, who is the choice of local branch members, has long been the target of Debus’s spite.
Searle was shafted by Debus at the last NSW State election when Bob conned Phil Koperberg into running. Searle is calling for a democratic rank & file preselection, the Hard Left are calling for an imposition.
MOUTHPIECE FOR HIRE
However, Bob in his zeal to feed his enormous ego did not properly check out Templeman’s spin doctor history. In 2001 Templeman was hired as a spin doctor by Trinity Grammar at the height of a sexual abuse scandal. Templeman was interviewed on ABC radio as saying private schools were businesses that needed to have damage control measures in place to handle such problems as sexual abuse allegations.
Labor patriots complain that while pretending to be a workers of the world type, Templeman has in fact carved out a career as a hired gun PR and media specialist, selling her skills to banks, private schools and the big end of town. Supporters of Searle promise that her mercenary history will be exposed.
This latest imposition by Bob Debus upon the rank and file members in the Macquarie electorate has locals hopping mad. One local Branch Secretary announced Bob Debus has just handed the seat to the Liberals Louise Markus by allowing his pathological hatred of Adam Searle to cloud his judgement.
Rudd is going to have a real problem on his hands with these seats.
Allowing Debus to impose Templeman on Macquarie will both destroy Labor’s chances of holding the seat and Debus’s legacy.
Why is Libiya not a failed state in the graphic?
Sam Crosby for McMahon!
Dear Bob,
Can you hear that?
It’s the sound of your past coming to run you over.
Good luck with Suzie, you’ll need it Comrade.
XX
Probably because there is no country/state named “Libiya”. Try “Libya”.
There will be no way Debus will win this fight. Even if it means burning the village down.
Bob is about to open up the Genie’s bottle of past sins.
If Bob’s people are reading this, prepare for a jihad that your boss wont recover from. We have the past wrapped up in a nice little bundle. Rudd will not touch anyone associated with Debus after we are done. Sorry Suzie, you’ll have to stay with PR.
Why dont we just dump David Bradbury for Laurie the Log. We cannot do any worse.
Mr Parkin,
Templeman is telling branch members you are supporting her and that your boss Steve Hutchins met with her and gave her his support over Adam.
Is this true?
Have you and your boss ratted on the faction? Soft Left wins over Hard Left and Searle is a friend of the Right.
Are you a sell-out like your boss, Chris?
I told you all Gilly would come to the rescue! Before you no it he might just be a Minister!
A friendly Labor source informs me:
Ed Husic (Bosnian Muslim) is going around telling everyone that he will be the next MHR for Fowler.
He is being actively supported by Julia Irwin and Chris Bowen.
The Throsby/Fowler agreement is still in effect – so it won’t be Wendy Waller or Laurie Ferguson getting the seat, it will be the Right’s candidate.
Bowen and Husic are close friends, with Bowen being best man at Husic’s wedding.
Joe Tripodi is strongly against Husic being selected.
The local Labor branches have strong elements of Serbian, Croatian, Italian and Assyrian/Chaldean communities – all of whom are strongly opposed to a Bosnian Muslim being their representative.
In particular, the Serbian and Assyrian bishops have told the ALP that if Husic is selected, they will campaign against him and the ALP.
Local ALP mayor Nick Lalic was so worried that he went to see Bowen, but Bowen said, “Who the f—k are the Assyrians to tell us what to do?!”.
The whole area is ‘on fire’ – no one candidate is acceptable to all, and Branch members are furious at the thought that Husic will be parachuted in via the N40 rule.
One Branch President has said he will resign from the party if Husic gets put in.
This is the area of the Bonnyrigg White Eagles Club (Serbian) – with graffiti along the lines “Kosovo will always be Serbian” prevalent.
Also the area of the King Tom Club (Croatian).
Says my mate: “I have never seen such hatred on open display at branch meetings” – and that says a lot in Western Suburbs ALP circles.
Also:
Michelle Rowlands is at unbackable odds to get Greenway.
Roger Price is trying to back his son into Chifley, but is getting push-back from local branch members.
Why did Steve Hutchins help facilitate a Hard Left candidate (Templeman) to run against Blue Mountains Mayor Adam Searle?
What kind of deal has Hutchins been trying to stitch up to save himself?
Once again Hutchins proves to be a rat and a liar.
When are you moving to Victoria, Steve?
I wonder what skeletons Mr Husic has in his closet. I though he was ” non practising” !!!
Michele rowlands- whats her claim on Greenway, I heard she lives in the city and didnt even bother running for council, there is a rumour that her hubby ran off with a bloke
So, Debus has hand picked Spin-Master Susan Templeman? She who defended Trinity Grammar when they got into pooh for that sex “problem” a few years back…good one Bob! So who will be her campaign director??? Dennis Ferguson?
You’re having a shocker Bob. Time to pack up your gear and f*ck off.
Gosh – the Left know how to pick ugly candidates!
Now, the Right know pretty when they see it…I mean, they picked me.
Mark Arbib’s grand plan for smooth preselections is fast falling apart.
Looks like democracy has gotten in the way!
What a shame it aint YLA, hey Mark?
http://feganfrenzy.wordpress.com/
Let all these self-interested,selfish fukfaces eat each other alive. They do nothing but lick arse and suck dicks and then they think they have a right to get what ever they want.Fukem all.
What the hell is Arbib doing allowing Debus to anoint his successor?
The woman he has tipped is a damn spin doctor and it looks like her point of view on such things as child sexual abuse in schools is that it should be something that is “managed” by the school, because the school is a business. My God, and Debus wants her to run in Macquarie, the seat with the largest number of teachers in it??
The margin in Macquarie after the redistribution is 0.1% – that’s about 800 votes, and Labor is going to run some yuppy PR “expert”? Louise Markus may be a dill but she has the backing of churches and is a common touch campaigner. Labor’s only chance is Searle, the local Mayor.
If seat carve up by Arbib and Albanese in NSW is coming apart. Chris Hayes is telling head office to piss off….Laurie The Log Ferguson is demanding a seat…The Left are trying to squeeze dopey Damien Ogden in somewhere….and in Macquarie Bob Debus is having his last harrah of spite in knifing Adam Searle one final time, aided and abetted by good old Senator Steve Hutchins!
What the f*ck Krudd! Are you going to let NSW fall apart because you trusted Arbib’s screwed up judgement???
Sounds like an ideal candidate to me.Anyone with expertise in damage control of sexual abuse allegations will never be short of a job in the Labor Party. It’s been a while since their last in-house paedophile was revealed so another one must be due anytime now.Having an experienced coverer-up on board when the next pervert is outed would be no load to carry.
I wish my name was listed as a Macquarie candidate.
I wish my name was listed as a Lindsay candidate.
Why won’t people considered me for anything?
I left my partner’s older sister for her when she turned 16. At least she told me she was 16.
I spend all day postIng comments on landeryou and making up crikey tips. Derrick gets annoyed with me for wasting time but secretly finds it funny.
I started a family because I thought it would help my preselection chances. Guess not.
Blogging about preselection deals i have no cobtrol over makes me feel like a man with purpose.
One of these days the party will understand my brilliance and make me a minister I just know it.
Better get back to the comments if I dont post under different names who will keep this story alive??!?!
I thought the ‘Ambition Faction’ were a Liberal beast?
Either way, I fully support their call for Sam Crosby.
The next generation coming up through the ranks ie. Sam, Daniel Mookhey et al, bring some serious talent to the table – and are significantly more formidable than some of the shambolic dinosaurs such as Ferguson!
I bet it is Mr Hankey the christmas poo… He loves me I love you
Do we really need more YLA hacks in the ALP, ChopChop, especially TWU ones?
Chris Hayes in Werriwa has shown he is an ethical pollie. Telling the ALP to take a hike shows that at least one Federal Labor MP has a backbone. It is about time the machine was told that preselctions should be democratic processes for ALP branch members.
Good on you Chris!
I’m pushing 30 and still live with Mum & Dad.
Life scares me and I spend my time reading about politics because real politics is scary and dirty and I might get hurt.
I once had some friends and when I had to back them I got scared and ratted. Now I’m scared that they will get me one day. I think they will.
I like the Hard Left because when I hang around them I feel intelligent, not that I’m not intelligent but feeling superior is a nice feeling.
I’d make a good pollie but that would mean making a decision to stand for something and that’s pretty scary.
Some playgrounds round Penriff are pretty nasty.
I tell my kids to never go near Park Mtolomy.
Is Husic a cert can someone tell me? When will the outcomes be known? Can the CEPU kiss goodbye to Ed before Christmas?
Ed should be a cert – he would make a good MP, and after the screwing he got last time, he deserves to get a winnable seat.
The preselection mess in NSW should be settled by early December.
The other bloke who deserves another run is Nick Bleasdale in Macarthur. He ran a great campaign last time and cut back an 11% margin to a slither. He deserves another crack at it.
Who the hell is Michelle Rowland????
A singer from Destinys Child?
No, wonder our once great Nation is suffering, with the mentality of the comments posted on this website a few more years and we will be a Third World Nation. One word to sum it up, Morons.
A lot of rank and file ALP members reading this… very funny stuff indeed.
Wow = I’m sort of taking a breath. This blog is appalingly twisted = what on earth is wrong with you people? Why the personal and miserable bile re people in the left of the Labor Party? This is a democracy last time I looked. You know – everyone entitled to their opinion. Laurie Ferguson has worked hard for his electorate for however long it has been – this I know. Susan Templeman I have not known long – but she is a pleasant and caring person who serves on various charity organisations – I don’t know why she deserves the vitriol being handed out by however is writing on this blog. It seems to me that Adam Searle (who is not a left person at all meaning he does not belong to the left hence would not be supported by the left of any kind if the left put up a candidate at any stage,) I am a member of the left and have been for decades. Perhaps Gary Punch – ex (right wing) member for whatever the seat around the St George area was – has been weaving his magic. I am told he is the chief “footsoldier” for Mr Searle – I have no idea really. Adam stood for the seat of Macquarie once and we lost very badly – in fact worse than at any other time, and the boundaries were pretty much the same as they now are. I find doing this sort of writing very sad – I have known Adam for a long time and I like him. I just cannot understand this sort of vile and personal diatribe and really hope he is not behind it.
I have just read over the awful stuff posted on this blog and felt I needed to say more. I know that Susan Templeman decided to put her hand up for pre selection all on her own. I know her through family connections. Bob Debus had no idea at the time – it was discussed by a very few people including Susan at a small social event. She believes in grassroots pre selection and such will happen. There is no saying how many candidates will rock up. But a grassroots pre selection will take place. Why don’t you bloggers sign off with your real name like I have? It’s the height of cowardice to pour out poison pen emails and then hide behind some strange signature. Bob Debus is an ethical and gentle gentleman – oh that the rest of our pollies were the same.
Unfortunately the last Democracy was in Sparta, the word itself means “the power of the people”. I doubt that exists anywhere today, instead the illusion is created in that we have a free vote, but then have to endure Governments for their term without them being accountable is a far cry from Democracy. A perfect example of this is a recent referendum in New Zealand on the smacking of children, where the people overwhelming voted for it, but the Government of the day ignored the majority and outlawed it. Democracy is bandied around in the same vain as the word “love”, no wonder there are so many divorces. This matter will be decided by a handful within the Labor Party and the members and public will be told that it was democratically decided. We live in a Capitaist world, where wealth and favours are the deciding factors.
Whoever you are Sue Deane, you have absolutely NO idea of what is going on out there.
How much were those rose coloured glasses you are wearing?
If you only knew how Debus and his people have been operating over the years you would probably need a Valium and a good lie down.
The Hard Left are just a bunch of Stalinists. It is time their tactics were turned against them.
Susan Templeman is being used by Debus and the Hard Left. You say you are from the Left, I bet you are not in the little circle that has and wants to continue their control over Macquarie and the Blue Mountains.
They used Stuart McGill to stack – then that failed – they even tried to used YLA Left kids, but that didnt go so well, so they resort to their favourite tactic: not allowing rank & file preselections.
Do you really think that their will be an open rank & file preselection anywhere, especially up there? You’d have a better chance of seeing a unicorn.
As for Bob being an “ethical and gentle gentleman”….oh my God, the man is a politician! How naive are you???
If “grassroots” preselections were the go, how come the Hard Left machinemen are against them? Tell me this, if you were awake at the time of the preselection for the last federal election, how come potential candidates were “instructed” that if they ran against Debus they would “face the reprecussions”?
So, Sue, instead of getting on here and talking absolute nonsense about gentlemen politicians, why not get on the phone and ring Luke Foley and ask him if Susan Templeman will have to go through a rank & file preselection?
Then get back on here and give us an honest answer.
Did you ever expect that Angus McFarland could stack the Blue Mountains with YLA kids? He is too busy sipping lattes and buying knitted cardigans in Newtown to do anything constructive like that.
I’m an avid Vexnews reader and “hard left” unionist. It’s always a good laugh and I’m often surprised at the accuracy of the tips.
I have got to say this little campaign has flushed out two issues:
Bob Debus has gone to lengths to control the process in Macquarie. Is that so bad? Not really, they all do it. He has been foolhardy in trying so hard to snip Searle’s career in the bud. Why go so hard, Bob? Is revenge worht it? Maybe he needs to step back and let that stuff go, so we will have a chance to hold the seat.
Adam Searle’s big mistake here is who he is now aligned with. It’s obvious that this campaign has Mark Ptolemy’s fingerprints all over it. Who remembers the “in the navy” campaign at the last state election?, the dirty mail out to all unions campaign against the TWU and the subsequent Sunday program report on the TWU slush fund and of course the various Paul Gibson brain explosions? As we all know Ptolemy and Searle (along with Blue Mountains Councillors Mark Greenhill and Alsion McLaren) are all mates from way back. They have been in cahoots for years. If Adam Searle wins this little stouch he will be Ptolemy’s bitch and thus the NUW’s bitch. Added to Searle’s woes is that he is way to close to Gary Punch and Ross Free. Adam, mate you need to cut those tow old has-beens loose.
If Debus loses and doesnt get his bird up as the candidate the axis of power shifts considerably. The NUW Right (as distinct from the “real” Right) will determine who runs for Blue Mountains and who runs for Council up in them thar hills. Political life as the ALP branch members know it will change completely.
The funny thing is the comments on this page referring I suspect to Ptolemy & Co will ensure he plays harder and meaner than before. Ptolemy is, without a doubt a mean little bastard. That could have been a big tactical error.
A possible solution? Scrap Searle AND Templeman and go for another candidate, someone who has no debt to pay to anyone, Left or Right. A fresh face from out of the local political stable. A local community leader? A local business person? Anyone.
Who is this Luke Foley? – isnt he the son of Ian McDonald
Since when is it dirty for members of a union to be concerned about their boss giving money to a bodgy fund controled by their union? Particularly when its money that should have gone towards the members wage increases. The Sunday program was spot on.Hutchins,Sheldon and Forno have a lot to answer for.
mark ptolemy is a c u nt.
despicable evil little s hit
Before this ends up a slag-fest, lets all look at the situation in both Werriwa and Macquarie:
Chris Hayes in Werriwa, selected previously by the local Branch members, elected MP, locals plus community members such as Father Chris Riley, says no to the Left’s demand that they should have the seat and give it to a little known union official called Damien Ogden.
In Macquarie, local Mayor Adam Searle puts his hand up. The Left under direction from outgoing MP Bob Debus say that an unknown PR consultant should be the Labor candidate.
In both situations, especially Macquarie the candidate selection is vital. So, why do the Left want to push their illogical choices?
Ego? Power? Blind hatred? All of the above.
The solution?
RANK AND FILE PRESELECTIONS.
That will settle the arguments and the best candidates will be selected.
I’m a worn-out hack of a Senator supposedly from the Right.
I set up meetings with Hard Left operatives.
I’m desperate top cut a deal to save my spot on the Senate ticket in NSW.
I do more deals now than I did when I ran my old union.
My wife just got preselected for a safe ALP seat near MELBOURNE but I’m a NSW Senator with an office in Western Sydney!
I keep telling people that I haven’t moved, yet Im still married…is it possible for me to be in two places at once?
Will I be able to fool everyone that I still work in NSW?
Will anyone know the difference.
Will anyone care?
To the Joker: You are obviously very young – your demeanor gives you away. Schoolyard stuff. I have been in the ALP for 34 years – most of that in the left. I was a Zone president, FEC president, secretary, conference delegate for many years, campaign director and candidate on at least half a dozen occasions. One of my nominators into the party all those years ago was John Faulkner. I was a nominator for Luke Foley into the left all those years ago. YOU have no idea what is happening up here you silly boy. I have degrees in Political Science and am completing a Masters in same (overdue through illness). You twit. To the person who keeps writing about Mark Ptolemy – Mark hasn’t lived or been the least active in the Mountains for years. There are quite a lot of new members who would have no idea as to what you are talking about. I have always been in the “inner circle” of the left – hard or soft. You idjit. The fact is that you are too young to know the real history of the ALP here or anywhere. This is obvious by your puerile and personal attacking.
WOW Sue,you should solve all our problems and become Premier.
Dear Sue,I would like to ask you if on any of the half a dozen occasions you were a candidate if you were successfull.
If not perhaps you should hand back your degree and not worry about your Masters.
To Ephelia: You obviously know that I stood in an unwinnable area. Perhaps you don’t quite understand the academic system. It actually doesn’t try to set you up for a politician’s job and I wasn’t really interested in getting one. There was a need for someone to stand and particularly a woman but I guess you could not possibly understand this because as said previously, either the Mayor or Ephelia, you know, whichever signature you are using, you have no intellectual or academic depth or historical understanding of politics or the Labor Party as indicated by your rantings. You are also a dirty mouthed little boy and should not be allowed out in public.
Why are the Left so against rank & file preselections?
In Macquarie, Searle has the best chance of winning. He’s Mayor. Susan whatsherface is not. No profile at all.Desite living at Springwood for years. She hasnt assisted in any campaigns.
Why doesnt The Left and Debus just allow a rank & file vote?
If Searle loses, then thats that. If not, you should respect the locals vote.
To Sue Deane: You are exactly one of the reasons why the Left trample over democracy. You have no idea what you are talking about. You are an intellectual snob and are irrelevant as you have always been.
Yes, I am a member of Katoomba branch and know of you and whats happening up there. Markus needs a strong well known opponent. Can you say Susan Templeman can offer that?
As for the “zone” – yes, you people have excluded many activists over the years, and now asthen -you are irrelevant and laughed at by Bob, Mark Andrews, and the rest.
Maybe you should start going to branch meetings again and actually do something…..and take Susan with you.
By the way….when WAS the last time you bother to get off your duff and campaign?
Last comments: As to me: I ALWAYS campaign, including other seats such as doorknocking in Parramatta last time. Nobody has to go to branch meetings all the time – just enough to vote if you so want. As I have an illness I do not turn up all the time now. After all I am in my 60’s and have been attending branch,SEC,FEC,LGC,State Conference and all sorts of other ALP things for a lot of the over 30 years I have been in the party. I get incredibly bored to be honest. Some points to leave you with. 1. Adam is NOT in the left, of the left or supported by the left. If a left candidate comes up against him – the left, soft or hard (as you call it) will support that candidate. If Adam wants to stand or Susan Templeman wants to stand for preselection or anybody else wants to stand for preselection – they can and they will as long as they qualify. Adam’s profile is not high actually – lower down the mountains people have to be reminded of his position and his name. Susan Templeman is very open and comfortable with people. She is media savvy. And – she is a woman up against another woman. Why wouldn’t she do well given a chance. But I am sure Adam. given the opportunity – would give it a hell of a shake – he is highly intelligent with incredible general and political knowlege. There endith my comment on this particular subject for the moment.
Dear Sue,I did not mean to hurt your feelings,I was just asking a simple question.Maybe you`re just dirty on the party for running you 6 times in unwinable seats.
Perhaps you should go and have 2 pink pills and 1 white pill and settle down.
You should all join the liberals, they are a much lamer bunch
Sue,
Just to correct you on this matter, it appears Mark Ptolemy is assisting Searle in his campaign for preslection. Ptolemy apparently has just purchased a house in Springwood and has moved back to the Blue Mountains. He made an appearance at last week’s Mid Mountains Branch meeting, pretty young wife and baby in tow. Searle annouced him as “admin committee member and former Mid Mtns Branch secretary”, probably trying to send a message that he’s got mates in high places in the Party.
I would suggest you do not make anymore comments on this site regarding the Party, Branches or personalities involved in the lead up to the endorsement of the Macquarie ALP candidate. It would be helpful not to give the Right any ammunition or platforms to fight on.
Thanks.
You here that Sue.In typical left style you have been told to get back in your box and shut the fuck up,masters degree and all.
For goodness sake why would anyone in their right mind care much about politics or politicians when the discussions on this post proove only one thing…you are all childish and use your blogging as a place to have school yard cyber fights with one another.
The real situation is the one that happens behind closed doors. At the end of the day no matter what is said Rudd will have his pick.
Kicking and screaming is going to get you nowhere. Ptolemy is a good man who stands up for his convictions probably why noone is prepared to face him with their problems. Sue is inexperienced and Searle is the Mayor. Rudd will choose who he wants because that is the new democracy in the ALP!
I don`t live in the Macquarie electorate,I actually live in Lindsay. Can somebody tell me where I can get one of Templemans posters.I will put it in my front yard to stop the dogs shitting on my lawn.
I am no great fan of Glenn Milne but check out this article from June this year:
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/ignoring-the-factional-elephants-in-the-room/story-0-1225734662724
It gives an outline of Debus’s insistence on choosing his successor in Macquarie. It shows his weird hatred of Adam Searle. I suggest all you Debus supporters have a read and tell us what you think of the “great man”
Hard Left wanna-be pollie writes on her business website http://www.templeman.com.au/:
“Her business has grown, mainly by word of mouth, to include some of the country’s biggest names in banking, finance, law and the business world. It includes the largest Government departments in NSW and the Northern Territory”.
Nice to see the Left have found someone from the Big End of Town. Nice one Bob! Just what we need – another spin doctor from the business world!
From another political website:
http://www.pollbludger.com/nsw2007/bluemountains.htm
“Bob Debus became member in 1981 after Clough moved to Bathurst, and would eventually serve as Attorney-General in the Carr/Iemma government. Debus’s political career had a seven-year interruption after his defeat by Liberal candidate Barry Morris at the 1988 election. Morris was re-elected in 1991, but disendorsed in 1995 following a police investigation into bomb and death threats against a Blue Mountains councillor. He ran again as an independent but was unable to prevent Debus from recovering his old seat, with a margin over the Liberal candidate of 2.5 per cent. Debus is retiring at the coming election; it is widely believed that this is a prelude to an entry into federal politics as the member for Macquarie. He recently found himself at the centre of controversy when Peter Debnam told parliament he was under investigation by the Police Integrity Commission, which backfired on Debnam when it emerged he had merely been the subject of a complaint by a convicted paedophile with a demonstrably tenuous grip on reality.
When Debus announced his retirement in October, a brand new preselection can of worms looked set to open following a series of head office interventions in other seats. High-profile Rural Fire Service chief Phil Koperberg (right) was mentioned as a possible contender, but he initially denied he was planning to run. Steven Scott of the Australian Financial Review reported that the electorate’s four branches were split between the Left and Right, the former backing academic and part-time school teacher Naomi Parry of the “hard Left”, the latter backing barrister and Blue Mountains councillor Adam Searle of the “soft Left”. The Left wished for the matter to be determined by a rank-and-file ballot, while Searle was reportedly lobbying for yet another head office intervention (though he denied this). Parry had the backing of Debus, but was compelled to withdraw when opponents unearthed a series of uncomplimentary remarks she had made about senior Labor figures on various political blogs, including a description of Morris Iemma as having “the charisma of a wet cat”. The matter was resolved when Koperberg changed his mind and agreed to nominate, having reportedly been wooed by Morris Iemma, Bob Debus, party state secretary Mark Arbib and assistant secretary Luke Foley. With Koperberg securing support from both factions, Searle also agreed to withdraw.
Koperberg had been mentioned several times over the years as a potential preselection candidate, and claimed to have been approached by the Liberals as well as Labor. Before the 2003 election, Labor delayed preselections in Penrith, Heathcote and Charlestown so he could leave open the option of running. No sooner had he secured the Blue Mountains preselection than he was forced to go public about an apprehended violence order taken out against him by his ex-wife Kate in 1987. Koperberg told Imre Salusinszky of The Australian that the affidavit had been shown to Mark Arbib by Blacktown MP Paul Gibson, who had recently concluded a 10-year relationship with Kate Koperberg, and claimed Gibson was about to leak it to Adam Searle. He went so far as to say the “smear campaign” being conducted by Gibson was “bordering on evil”, although Gibson denied all Koperberg’s allegations. According to the Daily Telegraph, it had alternatively been suggested that the order was leaked by Luke Foley (a member of the Left) to “frame” Adam Searle; another theory was that the leak came from Koperberg’s “enemies” in the Rural Fire Service”
That last sentence is VERY interesting!
Sue Deane – now you have educated us about your party history, it seems obvious that you are a party hack. Thank nogod you were a multiple loser and never elected as a community representative. The people of Macquarie would be best served by electing an Independent MP to take their issues to Canberra, rather than a spear-carrier to simply push the agenda of some faction of the Labor Party.
I wonder why a rank & file preselection is a scary thing for people like Luke Foley and Bob Debus?
Dear Adam,
Have you checked your fridge lately? I just heard Jeff Shaw is still looking for that blood sample.
You crook.
If the Left fluff up Macquarie the Right will grab it. Searle has promised every Right Winger that will listen to him that if he gets elected he will cross factions.
Is that the type of MP you people want?
As for Chris Hayes, well, has anyone ever heard of im? What does he do?
At least Laurie is a seasoned politician who will get the best results for Werriwa.
What’s that sound? Ah, Adam is checking his fridge!
Hey Adam, what’s that little bottle marked “J. Shaw”, next to the mustard? Check the use-by date, and your own while you are at it.
Hey Adam, where do you live now? Lilyfield? Dulwhich Hill? Must be murder travelling up to Katoomba for council meetings!
Hey Adam, Jeff wants to meet up for a drink. Are you up for it?
Hey Adam, Jeff still needs that blood sample – kepp looking in your fridge, man.
Who’s that on the phone? Ah, some drunken ex-pollie looking for Adam Searle to save his arse.
There is a 2 word answer why Adam Searle whould never be an MP:
JEFF SHAW
Hey Clingwrap …. I notice you didn’t add that she also worked for the union movement, Family Planning and not for profits. Seems you are only interested in half the story! Typical. Save us all the energy and put a fair amount of that clingwrap around your mouth!!
I think she may have also done a fair bit of work on Debus`s knob.
Why does`nt the sloth go and contest MacArthur.Oh, thats right,he may have to actually work.
Oh… so mature Mayor of Simpleton or is that just SIMPLETON!
Oh nasty….look out, Luke Foley is online!
As a Branch member in Macquarie, the thing I find most disturbing isn’t the fact that individuals and groups are sparring but it is that we, the rank & file will not get a choice to select our candidate. As usual it seems that our democratic right has been removed.
Of course, it should be an open contest, bearing in mind that it will be a tough seat to hold now that the Hawkesbury district in back in the electorate. It is obvious that the Mayor would carry more cache as a political product that any unknown contender, but that should be up to us to decide, not any factional bosses or Bob Debus.
Having read yesterdays Penrith Press and the story about Macquarie, I must say that Adam Searle would be Labor’s best bet. We do need more women in Parliament but I feel that should Susan Templeman be Labor’s candidate, the only woman who will benefit will be Louise Markus.
Hi Susie!!!
You did work for Family Planning? Shit, you just lost the Catholic vote out of Glenbrook Branch!
Can someone close to this give a daily running score please-which preselections are definately locked in and which ones will be a brass knuckle fight to the death. I have more than a passing interest in it. Ta

Rank and File participation in the ALP? Mate what are you smokin’? All you are good for is sausage sizzles, effing Christmas in July Fundraisers, and handing out how to votes for ten hours in the blazing sun!! Which part did you miss in the last twenty years? You are there to serve some incompetent union official, who, having stuffed up the EBA’s in the union; glides into a safe ALP seat. When will this change? It will change when rank and file branch members wake up and stop being so damn loyal and refuse to campaign for idiots. It will change when unions stop allowing their members to be used as someone elses stepping stone into the sheletered workshop in Canberra and they stop pushing their dregs onto the electorate.
To the yet another “anon” who has decided to give me advice on what to say or not to say about right, left or anything else. Pull your head in basically!!!!! Do you seriously believe I want or need any advice about politics at this stage of my life? This particularly patronising comment actually irritates me – especially as it is yet again the incredibly weak “anon” signature. As to that – good on you Alex Turvey for being honest.
To Sue Deane:
Reading on your past comments I’d say it was just your factional buddies trying to stop you saying anything more so you inadvertantely help your factional foes.
I feel a bit sorry for members of the Left such as yourself; you are being used. There is no idealism in the factionalised ALP. Do you really, in your heart of hearts believe Luke Foley or Anthony Albanese are Leftists? They just belong to a powerbase and use you poor chumps for election work.
As for Adam Searle, well to correct you he is from the Left. He is a member of the “soft” Left, who are a smallish sub faction not controlled by Foley, ALbanese, et al.
Where you are, the basic thing is that you need a good, well known candidate. Searle is the only one up there who can provide any kind of profile. Ms Templeman cannot. Sure, she can go out and campaign her heart out, but Searle also has the political experience of years of activism and an ability to fundraise. Think of what is best for the ALP, not your faction. The Wall came down 20 years ago, love. It’s all over.
Thank you Dave Warren: First for your openess and secondly for not communicating in anything but a reasonable way. I met Adam when he was a kid out of school and have known him since. He helped me at times and I have helped him previously. Seriously – I don’t care what I say or to whom at this stage = actually I have always been pretty open with anyone – left, right or whatever. I understand what you mean by “soft” left – ages ago when there was the “split” so to speak Rodney Cavalier called it the “rational” left. It was a sad time and people who really liked each other began not to. It healed. Sort of. But – Adam was NOT a part of same. If he is supported now by same I guess I have no idea by whom, but then I am not particularly active these days. Anthony has become a hard man but watching him in parliament I was glad he was there. I think it was the “ute” thing. I have always liked Luke a lot. My concerns were that a woman who has done nothing except throw her hat into the ring re pre selection was attacked by such verbal diahorrea. I felt she needed some support. For a start – as I have said before Adam is NOT a well known candidate. He has not been Mayor long enough and has not got much of a profile. In the Hawkesbury I would bet it is almost none. I am not quite sure what you mean about fundraising – anyone here has the same ability = and will get whatever from HO and Unions or wherever. Everyone deserves a chance and Susan will have the same opportunity when the campaign begins as Adam depending on which one gets up or if someone else does. Campaigns, as you know, are a different ballgame to the normal run of political game playing. I see it as a pretty even playing field actually.
Can anyone explain what is the difference between the soft L and the hard L
The “Soft” Left don’t dribble or rant like the “Hard” Left does. In fact, most are quite reasonable. It has nothing to do with erectile function.
By the way, Sue Deane, I think Susan Templeman was attacked because she has been anointed by Debus without any consultation with the rank and file. It happened with Koperberg (and that didn’t really go well) and enough is enough. It isn’t the Debus Labor Party it is the Australian Labor Party
Come on, come on whoever you are – give us a clue Joker? Are you going to continue to hide behind a fictional creature. What rank and file consultation? ALP members who qualify are able to decide to run for any sort of position in the branches or for pre selection as a candidate in any of the strata of government we have. You certainly do not need a consultation with the “rank and file” to do that. Phil Koperberg was the reason we held the state seat and has become very well liked – and = despite the NSW government looking like losing – Phil could be one of the winners it seems. You seem totally obsessed with Bob Debus – for goodness sake why? Are there other politicians you give your undivided attention to – if not – why not? I’m intrigued.
With all the rubbish that you people concern yourselves with, when we have no Surplus, Immigration, both legal and illegal out of hand, no health, education, transport. No wonder it’s call the ALP. The Australian Loser Party. Keep worrying about crap and you’ll be living in it, oh, we are already thanks to your party and mentality.
Bob looked like he had a few too many at the ALP conference today. Maybe he needs a drink or two to prepare for the drubbing he’ll cop tomorrow for the presidency.
“Popular Blue Mountains Mayor and long-time local Adam Searle”. Who’s writing this fantasy?
Searle, popular? Hardly.
Searle, Mayor. True, but he is so lazy and the Council is in a mess. Just ask any Councillor. ALP or otherwise.
Searle, long-time local? What about his stints living in Sydney and commuting for Council meetings?
Pass on Searle. He’s only good if the ALP want to lose the seat.
As for Susan whats her name. Who is she?
hey Sue, i know who the joker is. It is Barry Morris.
How are you Barry, would you like another doughnut?
Ok so it looks like a fix is on for Ferguson. So where does that leave Ed Husic? He was virtually already occupying Fowler. Does this mean he has to move the furniture back out and take the curtains back down!! Will he be moved somewhere else? Will a fix be found for him?
Suzie needs to spend more time at home with her kids – her teenage daughter is a high school drop out who has serious health issues. And yet Susan’s focus is on winning this seat. get your priorities right.
any child has the right to drop out of school when they finish year 10 and she did just that. she is working now and doing quite well
I wish Vassilli was running for Greenway and not this Michelle Rowland. She is s death trap.
What a vicious lot of rubbish you people write, one of the few exceptions is Sue Deane, do you even like yourselves. You remind me of the De Stael quote “the more I see of humans, the more I like my dog”.
