RESHUFFLE: Red Ted misses chance to chop deadwood

redted
Liberal leader Ted Baillieu is expected to purge underperformers in a significant reshuffle to be announced today.

Liberal insiders say he’ll be dumping retiring shadow health minister Helen Shardey and has been strongly encouraged across the party to make significant changes to get on a war-footing ahead of the next state election. She announced her intention to retire nearly months ago and has been treading water since. It’s not been a good look.

Some expect that Mary Wooldridge, the sister of a former Health minister Dr Wooldridge, will be elevated to that position.

VEXNEWS understands Baillieu had long delayed making any move, lest it destabilise the house of cards that is his party room support at the moment.

State Council is this Sunday, so he’ll be hoping to show off the new team there.

UPDATE: Typical of his reign of error, Baillieu took very few risks in the portfolio allocations.  He gave Shardey’s Health responsibilities to David Davis, a man who delights opponents in the upper house by enjoying a drink or four most sitting nights. He is a loyal ally for Baillieu but is not seen as very effective.

One very smart move is putting in Peter Ryan as shadow Police Minister. He’s probably the Coalition’s strongest performer and has even been considered as Opposition Leader despite being from the small National Party coalition partner.

Patriots will also be pleased about the elevation of Ted ally Inga Peulich, appointed a Shadow Parliamentary Secretary.

BAILLIEU POSITIONS COALITION FOR 2010
Posted on 05 November, 2009

Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu today unveiled his new Shadow Cabinet to carry the Coalition to the November 2010 election.

The re-shuffle follows the announced retirement at the next election of Helen Shardey, Member for Caulfield.

Mr Baillieu took the opportunity to thank Mrs Shardey for her dedication and service to the Coalition, and acknowledged her strong commitment to the health portfolio and compassion for Victorians.

“The new Shadow Cabinet has positioned key people in key portfolios as the Opposition prepares for the election,” Mr Baillieu said.

“This new team will build on recent policy initiatives and will ensure that Victorians have a real choice next November, with strong and talented individuals who can challenge the government head-on.

“After more than ten years in government, Labor has allowed basic services to go backwards and families are suffering in Victoria, and this team is a real alternative with the strength and capacity to govern better than Labor.”

Mr Baillieu said Peter Ryan had been appointed as Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Services, as well as Bushfire Response and Regional and Rural Development.

“In addition to Scrutiny of Government, David Davis assumes the portfolios of Health and Ageing,” Mr Baillieu said.

“Mary Wooldridge is the new Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change.

“Michael O’Brien will assume responsibility for Energy and Resources, Exports and Trade, and the new portfolio of Infrastructure and Public Private Partnerships.

“In addition to his role as Shadow Attorney-General, Robert Clark becomes Shadow Minister for Finance.

“Andrew McIntosh takes on the roles of Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention, Integrity of Government, Freedom of Information and Corrections.

“Ryan Smith enters the Shadow Cabinet for the first time as Shadow Minister for Manufacturing and Industrial Relations,” Mr Baillieu said.

David Hodgett is the new Shadow Cabinet Secretary. In addition there are three new Shadow Parliamentary Secretary appointments: Bruce Atkinson to Business Development; Gary Blackwood to Health Services; and Heidi Victoria to the Arts.

David Morris becomes Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Environment. Edward O’Donohue becomes Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Resources and Families. Donna Petrovich becomes Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Bushfire Response. Inga Peulich becomes Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Communities and Wastewatch. Nick Wakeling becomes Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader and Community Services.

  1. Hopefully Dalla-Riva will do the right thing and quit or Ted will see the light and sack him.

  6. Shadow treasurer should change to either mulder or o’brien

Guy due for big promotion, should get transport or education

O’Brien should get ag and police
    if not shadow treasurer

    Mary will get health
    Ryan Smith for planning

Clark is useless, shunt and punt him.

  7. Dumping Shardey, if true, makes sense, as she is retiring having made the blue ribbon seat of Caulfield a marginal seat in her time as the local Liberal Member for Israel.

She has been incompetent in any ministerial or shadow portfolio she has been appointed too.

Will she and her hen pecked husband may retire in Israel?

I hope Ted does well at the next election as after 10 years of Labour “Its Time”.

  11. since this is cup week which betting company is managing the odds of who gets what? Didn’t realise Mary W was a Doctor, don’t think this is correct however she is extremely capable. Shadow Treasurer should be in same house…. so GRP seems sensible, IP for Education, agree with Deck chairs on some however not on RC. NW should have local government now where do I put my money!!!

  16. I see there are the same anti-Catholics in the Victorian Liberal Party as we have with Alex Hawke in NSW. Alex and Ted would make great mates. Can someone introduce them?

  17. NW doesnt have the time for shadow responsibilities. Having won Ferntree Gully by a handful of votes, his time is 100% spent fighting to get his face in the local paper, using cynical methods such as making up awards and presenting them to genuinely useful locals at town halls. His output as a public servant is zero.

  24. Inga was already a parl sec, and health was moved to lower house under shardey to go head to head with the minister, now not much chance of that… unless!!!!!!!!!!

  26. This is a joke. He hasn’t purged anyone – Shardey was going anyway. Meanwhile Wells and Dixon stay? Mulder should have taken shadow treasury at least.

  27. If the election result mimics the latest Newspoll of 57/43 then next time round Ted will have to divide all the portfolios between O’brien and himself

  42. Bernie Finn should be party leader! In any case, all members of the Victorian Liberal Party should look up to him and follow his lead, because he is one decent guy who’s a great speaker, upholds the most excellent values and has a genuine passion against the socialist-left who are currently in power in this state

  43. BOFail, Alex Hawke, Paul Fletcher, Tudgey le Fudgey, Red Ted, Greg Hunt, Malcolm Turnbull and unfortunately the list goes on.

All deadwood moderates who are just as exiting to the electorate as watching paint dry.

They offer know alternative government to the electorate as all they ever say is “Labor is crap but we are better” without releasing any real policy and even have a habit of drifting further left than labor on some issues (eg: power privitisation in NSW, por dredging in VIC and gay marriage in Federal parliament).

If voters want Labor they will vote for the real thing, Labor. They won’t vote for Labor-lite aka the moderates in the Liberal Party.

Bugger off moderates, go and drink your lattes and abort your babies somewhere else.

  48. How appropriate that Inga Peaulich takes over the Waste portfolio. She is so full of shit (thus making her guts as large as a house) that she will be perfect to talk about rubbish.

Well done Ted for identifying the true qualities of this oxygen thief who spends half her life back stabbing everyone and the other half eating.

  52. Liberals to rule in 2010: I agree with you that Bernie should lead the Libs.

Ted lacks sincerety on the big screen. He will never carry credibility because of his manner and perceptions about people born with silver spoons in their mouths.

I do however disagree that the Libs will rule next year. You might as well stick with Ted for now, and clean out the cupboard after the next election.
