ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: Drag the asylum seekers off the ship and end this farce

tamils (1) The past and the future of Australia is all about immigration. Our prosperity and achievements have been built on its foundation and will continue to be.

And we concede that there is a degree of public concern about asylum seekers arriving by sea to Australia that vastly exceeds the reality of the problem. Many Australians see this phenomenon as akin to a threat to our national security, our national sovereignty when it is plainly no such thing.

GENEROUS OFFER
And yet the Australian Government, having made a very generous offer to the Tamil asylum seekers that has been rejected, now has no choice but to act quickly and remove these people from the Australian ship “Oceanic Viking” so their applications for asylum can be processed in the normal way.

It has even been suggested the asylum seekers have been living in Indonesia for some time and have seized this opportunity to come to Australia.

This is a painful issue for the government, led by an internationalist PM who wants to make nice with the United Nations and all sorts of tut-tutters who won’t understand that Rudd government’s political future depends on how it is seen to deal with this issue.

If Kevin Rudd looks like he’s being dictated to most unreasonably by 78 asylym seekers, he will look a greatly diminished leader in the eyes of many Australians.

The Newspoll jump for the Coalition might be temporary but it will only be temporary if the government is seen to be willing  and eager to defend the country’s borders from intruders and invaders.

“Who runs this country?” the normally politically mild breakfast show host “Kochy” opined this morning on Sunrise, speaking for many Australians who think the government has now waited too long to take action.

HUGE POLITICAL RISK
If the Australian government cannot or will not physically remove the 78 Tamil asylum seekers from the Australian ship, if it takes them to Australian territory in the form of Christmas Island, then it will convert the most recent Newspoll shift into a permanent one.

It’s as simple as that.

A horrible choice. But one obvious decision that is staring the Prime Minister in the face.

There is no question the Australian public over-state the threat that arrivals by sea represent. In many ways, VEXNEWS doesn’t get it. But there’s also no question the Australian public will not long tolerate a federal government that fails in its duty to keep our borders secure and that paints itself like it’s taking orders from asylum seekers on a ship.

It’s time to send in the troops and let the 78 Tamils, people smugglers around the world and most importantly all Australians know that Kevin Rudd isn’t afraid of looking bad in the eyes of the “chattering class” in order to do his duty.

The simple fact of Australian public opinion – beyond inner-city Melbourne and Sydney – is that these people cannot be allowed to humiliate the Australian government for a day longer. Kevin Rudd has said he has infinite patience on this issue. He might. The Australian people don’t. He’s running out of time.

If the asylum seekers have a valid claim, and we suspect those taking these extraordinary risks must have a pretty compelling reason to have acted this way that goes way beyond a desire for a lifestyle change, they should get the same reasonable and even-handed treatment all other asylum seekers receive from the Australian government. After they are removed from the Australian ship that rescued them, with force from the Australian authorities if necessary, and left in Indonesia so their asylum application can be properly considered in accordance with Australian law.

  1. I’ve got a better solution.

Sail the ship to the waters off East Africa, and let the Somali pirates take over.

  3. Well they’ve been processed and want a country to accept them. They’ve waited years, and apart from sending them back to the hellish conditions in Indonesia which you seem more than happy for Australia to pay for, I don’t see any other choice for them. I feel bad for them.

  4. WHAT hellish conditions in Indonesia? Where’s the evidence of “hell”?

If some of these people have been living in Indonesia for up to five years, why haven’t they improved their conditions in that time?

Movement is easy within Indonesia, living is cheap, and if they were truly oppressed during that time they could have moved on to a neighbouring country.

These “asylum seekers” are nothing but lying, opportunistic scammers.

I’m really looking forward to having them join the dole queue and/or taxi rank :(

  5. Either they agree to the Indonesia solution or the ship should sail to Sri Lanka and drop them off there. They can return after they make an application from that country

  6. They are jumping the queue. If Australia accepts these 78 Sri Lankans then 78 other people deemed refugees will not make it to Australia.

Australia accepts 13,000 refugees a year. By taking the queue jumpers, refugees who do the right thing are punished.

  7. “If some of these people have been living in Indonesia for up to five years, why haven’t they improved their conditions in that time?”

Because they were kept there DETAINED! Don’t you know anything? Ask the authorities you’re whoring them off to why they were kept like that. It’s Australian tax money that’s gonna keep that continuing in any case.

  8. Better they live in Indonesia than next to me.

  9. I would go one further. Refugee Convention suggest that refugges have an obligation to be law abiding. Hijacking a vessel is not lawful and they should lose their right to claim refugee status. You cannot allow ourself to be held to ransom by criminals or anarchy will persue. Life in Indonesia is better with money than being in Australia without.

  10. Fill the Oceanic Viking up with “refugees” evacuate the Australian crew and have a Collins class sub use it for target practice.

  11. Agreed. We are being over-run by scum. Not only will our cities fill up, pushing house prices to unbelievable levels but we the stupid taxpayers pay for these boat ‘people’.

    Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009, 11:48
  12. Detained? Then how were they able to acquire the funds, make arrangements for a boat, and sail away for Australia?

    You’ve fallen for the scam.

    Posted by JackSparrow | November 6, 2009, 12:15
  13. That’s how determined they were to leave, they were recognized refugees by the UNHCR in Indonesia, kept in centres there, treated harshly, got someone to agree to transport them somewhere, but didn’t reach another destination. And now they are to be condemned to further squalid conditions, while excuse after excuse is thrown at them for not being accepted anywhere. I’m on their side.

  17. to the paranoid racists who don’t like “curry munchers”, want to kill them by submarine and would prefer them to stay in indonesia, what are you afraid of?

dickheads like yourselves and the scholars who drive around with “Fuck Off We’re Full” stickers on cars, should be packed onto a leaky boat and sent on your way, this country doesn’t need you.

the queue jumping argument is not a great example of reasonable, considered thinking either. Members of minority groups in Sri Lanka, Iraq and Afghanastan can’t just walk into Australia Post with $180 and get a passport, for these people the problem is getting out of their country, not getting into ours.

I’m not advocating an open door immigration policy, but a good start would be humane treatment and a reasonable timeframe for processing applications. Your precious white, judeo-christian values should at least concede to that.

  22. Oceanic Viking is presently in Indonesian territorial waters.

Don’t think the local governor and military will welcome the Blackhawks and Aussie SAS to help the visitors disembark. Just a feeling, mind you.

And sending the troops in without an invite is an international incident if not arguably an act of war.

As long as the Viking stays in Indonesian territorial waters – those folk aren’t moving unless they want to.

Move the vessel into international waters and you can hardly remove them from the vessel, toss them into boats and point them back at Indonesia at gunpoint.

Pretty sure that is in breach of more than a few maritime and international obligations. So – mid-ocean dumping very unlikely, but not impossible if Ruddie really gets ticked off about their intransigence ;-)

So – the ever-pragmatic Graham Richardson has probably nailed the resolution yet again. Welcome to Christmas Island, in time for Christmas !!

  25. Jack Sparrow asks “WHAT hellish conditions in Indonesia? ” I also ask that question. When John Howard introduced his “Pacific Solution” The do-gooders complained about the insufferably hot conditions on the island. They even had a photo of a poor wretched individual hiding under a house to escape the intolerable heat!! The Fact is Nauru has an island climate and the temperatures are generally a pleasant 28-30 degree (C) all year round.

  26. These 78 on the Oceanic Viking would make good Australians would they? Already refusing to cooperate with the Government of the country they want to live in. Disgusting.

    Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009, 18:48
  27. Racist? Moi??

Now let’s see … it was the TAMILS who started a terrorist campaign in Sri Lanka, seeking to create an ethnic-specific enclave on that island … that terror campaign resulted in the government action to protect its lawful citizens … now those same Tamil terrorists, their families and fellow travellers are seeking to create another little enclave, just this time in Australia.

And let’s not forget that there is no campaign of genocide, terror or any other brutal action against them in the country on which THEY wrought havoc for so long!

Offering these people asylum would be like offering asylum to members of the SS in 1945.

    Send ‘em back.

  31. Hey trekkiesareus,

If they were “DETAINED” then how did they move to the boat in the first place? Gee, must be really secure detention.

The fact of the matter is that they are economic shoppers. They want a prosperous country (who can blame them) but nonetheless, if they are refugees then they are probably LTTE members since normal Tamils are still living happily in other parts of Sri Lanka.

  39. What are we whingeing about? Australia – along with other western nations – took a decision without consulting the indigenous Palestinians to offload millions of refugees onto Palestine. Now, when it’s our turn to take in refugees, we say: “We should have the right to decide who comes or doesn’t come into our country.”
